Tom Vercetti Posted December 23, 2018 Posted December 23, 2018 I like every song this batch. Honestly the middle section of SOPHIE's album grows the most.

Agree 100% with your descriptions on the other 3. this is your best set so far It is an underrated classic. I'm a Lykke stan so I don't mind long choruses. Eeveelution Posted December 23, 2018 Author Posted December 23, 2018 (edited) 10. Kali Uchis - "In My Dreams" From: Isolation One of my weaknesses in music is a song that is upbeat and catchy yet has pretty sad lyrics. “My mama’s never on coke” is a disarmingly blunt line from Kali Uchis on the Isolation highlight In My Dreams, but you almost wouldn’t notice given the Nintendo 64 synths and propulsive melody. In My Dreams is a hyperactive sugar rush of a song, almost too happy, as if Kali is using her daydreams to escape her actual problems. Of course, Miss Uchis makes a convincing argument for her dream world and its pretty easy to join her along for the ride, for three and a half minutes at least.. See also: "Your Teeth in My Neck" ; "Feel Like a Fool" 09. U.S. Girls - "Incidental Boogie" From: In a Poem Unlimited A trend across Meg Remy’s In a Poem Unlimited is that each song is both excellently written and sounds like nothing else released this year, Incidental Boogie is no exception. Ms. Girls is a highly perceptive songwriter, who in only three minutes sketches out a protagonist who is downtrodden, brutalized, self-aware, and crucially, more than a little sarcastic. Remy tackles the song with a lick of gallows humour while also showing empathy and compassion in a way that really impresses me. Of course, the song is named Incidental Boogie and this song is nothing short of a big bop. The track is built on some rap-rock esque guitars and bizarre mechanical-sounding synths that shouldn’t work together, but remain captivating and very very danceable. See also: "Rosebud" ; "L-Over" 08. Kimbra - "Like They Do on the TV" From: Primal Heart Kimbra has been notorious for stuffing as many genres as humanely possible into a single song, but on Like They Do on the TV she really homes in a kind of dreamy synthpop that is so rewarding when done right. It’s not the most original sound, but all is forgiven when that transcendent, feather-light chorus kicks in. I have been a fan of Kimbra for some time now, but honestly I had no idea she had such a perfect pop song in her. I think it’s the shaker, the shaker definitely takes this to the next level for me. See also: "Lightyears" ; "Past Love" 07. Hatchie - "Sleep" From: Sugar & Spice Most dream pop artists place emphasis on building atmosphere with their songwriting, however Miss Hatchie clearly never got that memo, as she is far more interested in writing infectious glittery bops. A recent review conceptualized Hatchie’s music as “If Max Martin produced a Cocteau Twins record” and I don’t think there is a better way of putting it: Sleep is uplifting, stadium-ready pop that trades a studio finish for shoegazey guitars and a healthy dose of reverb. I don’t think any newcomer this year has been so sure of themselves as an artist as Hatchie, and I can’t wait to see what she does next. If she tops this song… it’s over for the girls.. See also: "Bad Guy" ; "Adored" 06. Robyn - "Honey" From: Honey “No, you're not gonna get what you need / But baby, I have what you want” and Robyn really did give the gays everything that they want, didn’t she? The mythology of Honey, first debuted a year ago in [redacted’s] sitcom Girls, completely escaped me because, well, I was too busy running my mouth about how Robyn was overrated. Thankfully, this song made me switch. Honey Is the perfect anti-pop song: the chorus doesn’t pop like a true smash should, in fact, I would say that the verses are the highlight here. I love the way she delivers each line and how the lyrics are kind of odd, yet very satisfying, "never had this kind of nutrition" indeed. Also, not to sound Halsey'd but I have to say that the production does really bring to mind the orange tones of the single cover: the synths are so rich and gooey like, well... honey. See also: "Human Being" ; "Send to Robin..." Edited December 23, 2018 by Eeveelution

Maddox Posted December 23, 2018 Posted December 23, 2018 Top 10 already starting great!! In My Dreams and Incidental Boogie Interesting description of this Hatchie girl, will check out her EP soon!
theblackestday Posted December 23, 2018 Posted December 23, 2018 Wig, a set. I don't get why In My Dreams is so polarizing but then again, it's pretty ahead of its time so I do get it. Incidental Boogie is still mindblowing as if its my first time hearing it. Hatchie sweetie I'm so sorry, I'm so sorry that a ugly ass bitch like this would even compare your work to Max Martin, oh my god. But yes Sleep soty. Honey... great gowns beautiful gowns
ATRL Moderator Unoriginal Posted December 23, 2018 ATRL Moderator Posted December 23, 2018 You snapped with all five of these picks had no idea Kimbra would be this high Incidental Boogie is pure talent, not everybody has that Max Martin wishes he could produce something as perfect as Sleep Honey truly is incredible huh? it's grown on me so much since first listen your writeups are so consistently good btw
Eeveelution Posted December 23, 2018 Author Posted December 23, 2018 (edited) 05. Charli XCX - "No Angel" From: N/A Much like Honey, the myth of No Angel dated way before the song’s official release. However, unlike Honey I was the one perched for this track. I’m not one for leaks, but I somehow came across No Angel sometime in 2017. I was so hooked that as soon as the song was released, unceremoniously put on a Turkish streaming site, I immediately scoured the internet for it. Needless to say, the song did not disappoint. Charli is not much of a lyricist; however, No Angel is very-well written. Charli has said that her lyrics are often impersonal, but there’s something that feels honest about No Angel’s self-depreciation. The song’s crown jewel, though, is its melodic strength. Everything from the verses to the chorus to the bridge is irresistibly hooky and infectious; given that the XCX signature is repeating a title of the song ad nauseam (which I love!), it’s also nice to see a more developed chorus from her. Anyway, this is the best song Charli released in 2018, thanks for coming to my TED talk. 04. Yves Tumor - "Noid" From: Safe in the Hands of Love Noid is a one of a kind song. The lyrics talk about police brutality, delivered by a Yves in a flat, defiantly monotone tenor. As the song reaches the end, screams and wails can be heard buried into the mix. All this points to what sounds like a very difficult listen. However, Noid is quite possibly the catchiest song I have heard all year! Somehow, Yves Tumor turns what is a hopeless subject matter into something uplifting and powerful, “that's where I feel the pressure of / 911! 911! 911! / Can't trust them” could be lyrics to a crushing ballad, but he frames them as a rallying cry and a hook for the ages. Pop girls could learn a lot from him. 03. Ravyn Lenae - "Sticky" From: Crush The lyrics to Sticky aren’t much on paper, just pretty generic lines about the push and pull of relationships. However, the way Ravyn delivers them brings them to life in a way that a lesser vocalist could not. I would say that no two lines in Sticky are delivered in the exact same way. Crucially though, it never feels like Ravyn is oversinging or showboating, rather she is just having fun with the song and giving each verse its own flair. Ravyn’s voice is beautiful, but also a little strange (there have been Kate Bush comparisons), and I like that Steve Lacy frames this with both some funky guitar lines, but also an organ that is just slightly at odds with the rest of the song. All the elements of Sticky just coalesce in a way that is very satisfying like only the best singer-producer collaborations are - I can't wait what they have in store for 2019! 02. Beach House - "Lemon Glow" From: 7 I love when artists develop and switch up their sound, however there is something comforting about Beach House’s music. You always know what you’re getting with them. To many of you that might mean indifference or even dislike for the band, but to me it means that some of the best music of the year is on the horizon and 2018 was no exception. Released on Valentine’s Day, Lemon Glow has some of Beach House’s most optimistic and romantic lyrics yet, backed on a bed of luminescent, psychedelia-drenched synths that are destined to be appropriated by hip-hop artists in the decades to come. More than any song this year, Lemon Glow has been something I can play over and over, the song has a kind of gravitational pull that has kept me coming back constantly throughout this year. This would have been a worthy #1, but alas, something a little better would come along... 01. Lana Del Rey - "Venice Bitch" From: Norman Fucking Rockwell Before you bring out the *pretends to be shocked* gifs, I would like to say that this is actually the first time Lana has topped one of my best ofs: and I’ve been doing these for a minute. Venice Bitch is "experimental", but that’s not the reason it’s so special: it manages to be both experimental, while still being the classic Lana song. Venice Bitch has everything that makes Lana Lana; the pointedly disaffected vocals, lyrics about soft ice cream and unattainable men, and a laconic melody that’s just a little too good for this world. It then takes all of these and twists and distorts them into something completely new. Lana herself is only a transient presence in latter part of the song, dissipating into Jack Antonoff’s washes of electric guitar and bleary synthesizer. It is a long song: sometimes when I’m bored at work, I’ll countdown in Venice Bitches (“only 4 Venice Bitches to go” – it makes me feel better, ok!), but I don’t think there is one second I’d cut. Honestly? I couldn’t name a better song this year if I tried. Edited December 24, 2018 by Eeveelution
ATRL Moderator Unoriginal Posted December 23, 2018 ATRL Moderator Posted December 23, 2018 LANA FUCKING WON this is pretty much a flawless top five though and the writeups are amazing the top three especially whew you really snapped (again) with these choices honestly the top ten is one of the strongest i've seen the post-chorus melody on VB is one of my favourite things she's ever done, i wish it was repeated more than twice (and in the first two minutes at that) but the second half of the song is so strong that equally i don't mind that much
Tom Vercetti Posted December 23, 2018 Posted December 23, 2018 Based on recent activity it seems Noid is the top pick around here. Got love for a lot of these songs (except In My Dreams ) I was expecting either beach house or lana to top this so at least I was half right. Quote I would like to say that this is actually the first time Lana has topped one of my best ofs learn something new everyday. I wish I could write things (with elegance and passion!) but I prefer the easy way.
Vilppu Posted December 23, 2018 Posted December 23, 2018 the women charli and ravyn are today! NOID has been like the most ATRLcclaimed song this year, no? deserved! lemon glow is a very deserving #1 too though, i'm glad you enjoyed it so much i'll reluctantly admit VB's second half is g**d great list as always ^-^

Dom Posted December 23, 2018 Posted December 23, 2018 Yass at Venice Bitch, Lana did very good job on it, probably my fave track from her in a while, well since Love, cause Love was a masterpiece. No Angel is also a very strong track, but Focus and Girls Night Out top it. Uh Hatchie sleep is so amazing, dream pop whew.
World Eater Posted December 24, 2018 Posted December 24, 2018 You didn't have to snap this hard with the entire top 10 I personally would have chosen other tracks from Isolation and Poem, but I love Incidental Boogie and understand the appeal of both sings I don't even what more to say, I just like basically every song on here jfnfdjfd. Kinda wish Venice clicked with me, but it is a cute sing and indeed a cute winner.
Pink Matter Posted December 24, 2018 Posted December 24, 2018 The way Lana always wins Pretty fantastic top 10 (especially since we have a few of the same artists here ). While some of our artists are the same, we have some pretty different song choices.
