Father John Misty

Just Dumb Enough to Try

6956727

Quote

It's no secret that I genuinely enjoy FJM so it shouldn't be a surprise to many to see him here, though I'm sure it'll still be a disappointment to some. Just Dumb Enough to Try is a beautiful piano rock ballad that builds up and tears down the Father John Misty character Josh Tillman has cultivated over four albums. It feels like there's more reality in Just Dumb Enough than in many of Tillman's past FJM works, however, as the sincerity and emotional weight in his voice comes across more powerfully than it ever has before on this track.

Falling Into Me

6920722

Quote

From the blaring opening synths to its anticipatory chorus buildup to the euphoric chorus itself, it's clear that Falling Into Me is a high point in Let's Eat Grandma's discography. It's essentially just a love song but what makes Falling Into Me stand out so excellently is the ease with which all the elements that make the song work perfectly together.

Adrianne Lenker

symbol

7154585

Quote

Like its title suggests, symbol is written almost entirely in metaphor and with heavy reference to symbols like the clock in the chorus and the infinite in the verse. It seems as if you're not meant to understand entirely what the song is about but the delicate intricacy of the instrumentation makes symbol the song that it is.

Rae Morris

Lower the Tone

6833888

Quote

Lower the Tone is tense and intimate; it requires patience, not reaching its peak until the bridge, but the patience pays off with one of the most enjoyable synthpop songs of the year.

Kacey Musgraves

Space Cowboy

Quote

To think I enjoyed Butterflies more than this pretty much right up until the album came out. Sad songs won.

Florence + The Machine

Big God

7037035

Quote

I love the piano on this for a reason I can't figure out? Though lyrically it's essentially a retread of 2015's Delilah (it's about being left on read after texting someone), it does everything better.

#44

Troye Sivan

The Good Side

6833087

Quote

I really like the imagery of this song and the folktronica works surprisingly well. The use of vocoder is really nice as well.

#43

Kero Kero Bonito

Only Acting

6867403

Quote

It's probably the least original thing I could say about Only Acting but I really did think either my phone or my earphones were broken the first time I heard this. The song's production complements the lyrics nicely, with the glitching and bursts of noise feeling representative of the real life emotions breaking the perfect pop sheen frontwoman Sarah sings about.

Kimbra

Like They Do on the TV

6931065

Quote

I thought I was having deja vu putting Kimbra and KKB next to each other and it turns out I did the same thing with Make Believe and Version of me :skull: it's completely unintentional but yeah. Like They Do discusses the ways in which social media and the modern day have made being a celebrity a completely different experience for the new generation compared to past generations. It took a few listens to grow on me but ultimately the production won me over.

Low

Disarray

7113360

Quote

The final single released from Doule Negative is also one of its strongest. It almost sounds like the files that were originally produced for the song were corrupted but the end result was still used. The crunching, crushing electronics on Disarray make it an incredibly unique listen and cement the production as the song's driving force as well as what makes it as good as it is.

i literally have no idea what to say about most of these songs and i'm pretty sure it shows

Big God was pretty good, esp considering the album sucked oop!

I know the glitchy breakdown on only acting wasn't that favored but idk I don't mind it.

Cause it's boring now and at this stage of his life it's not even believable. Like that GQ interview made it clear this isn't HoB Abel anymore and his subject matter should start to diversify now.

Great set tho, wow the Charcoal Baby acclaim.

Oh wow, this update :omg~1:. Dua Lipa really snapped with Electricity and One Kiss, honestly I like them more than her album arn7Z8c.gif

Yves Tumor revived trip hop:alexz:Snooze Mail made some points with Heat Wave, it might be her only song to not put me to sleep. On The Low was a low-key pop song, I liked it. Blood Orange is a liar for making us believe that his album would be like that :fish2:. Charli released great singles this year, 5ITM was cute. Surprised at Mitski, I thought it would be much higher on your list :omg~1:

Where is the lie?

you made some points with this comment

I was gonna say I'm glad you recognize .t lickinganorchid.m4a as an album highlight considering you have other faves from SITHOL, but I forgot this is a singles list :rip: Either way, I'll take it 477959069102112769.png?v=1

The first sentence of the Heat Wave write up being a disclaimer :dies: Ngl, though it'd land higher

Nice for What (totally forgot about it while doing my list :jonny:), 5ITM, Charcoal Baby, Nodoby and APESHIT :alexz:

LAO is probably still in my top five 477959069102112769.png?v=1

maybe Heat Wave deserves to be higher. maybe i'm already regretting it

that's funny, tell another one.

Not pristine, the SSMS jumped out...

hopefully Only Acting was the song you were hoping to see cause it's only two singles per artist
