Focus at 78 and being better than no angel? We all make choices, but that was a choice.

Animal is cute but he tried a bit too hard to be Frank there.

When I heard that Empress Of song's chorus I was like girl are you serious, but it's a bop I guess.

Quiz and Teenage Fantasy are both great choices!

Kero Kero Bonito

Make Believe

7156414

Quote

How do I even describe KKB's music? It's synthy and poppy I guess but that feels like a really generic description? Make Believe's narrator seems to understand the inevitability of life whilst still enjoying fantasy. I think it's quite a pensive song at its core despite its poppy presentation.

Kimbra

Version of Me

6882750

Quote

The highlight of Kimbra's gorgeous piano ballad Version of Me are the arrestingly raw vocals: Kimbra is vulnerable and hurt and the vocals are remarkably emotional. Lyrically the song is direct, with Kimbra singing about the person she could be if the person she was with got back with her; it's the song's absolute honesty that makes it so brilliant.

ROSALÍA

MALAMENTE (Cap.1: Augurio)

7010644

Quote

The 'bad mind' of Malamente knows from the very begging how it's going to end but does it anyway. It's a bad idea that you follow through anyway. The vocals are sensual and the song is foreboding; Malamente is the perfect introduction to the world of El Mal Querer and a sublime song.

Earl Sweatshirt

Nowhere2go

7226136

Quote

"Only thing on my mind was death" Earl raps on Nowhere2go. There's little left to interpretation on the first single from Some Rap Songs as depression, suicide and religion all make an appearance in the song's less-than-two-minute run time.

#66

Travis Scott

SICKO MODE

7092012

Quote

There are three parts to SICKO MODE. The second part is clearly the best part but all three parts are great in their own right. The production is slick and polished and Drake's and Swae Lee's guest appearances are welcomed. I don't think I've ever heard Drake's first verse in public and not also heard practically everyone singing along to it.

#65

Thom Yorke

Unmade

7209390

Quote

Unmade is eerily beautiful. Lyrically it's simple but what really makes Unmade such an impressive song is the piano, Thom's vocals and the choir all melting together to create the song's haunting atmosphere.

Hatchie

Sugar & Spice

6942740

Quote

Hatchie's mix of dream pop and shoegaze isn't revolutionary but it's perfectly done. It's guitar-y, hazy and ethereal and Sugar & Spice strikes the perfect balance between the two. It's about either an unrequited or a lost love I'm not 100% sure. Maybe it's both.

#63

U.S. Girls

Pearly Gates

6823574

Quote

Pearly Gates is a genius song. It's biting criticism of men in power, using the legend of Saint Peter to tell the story of a woman who has to have sex with him in order to get into heaven. Who else could come up with something so unique to sing about something so socially and culturally relevant in today's society?

#62

Natalie Prass

Lost

6975694

Quote

Lost is Natalie Prass's Me Too story. It's minimal, building around simple percussion and piano with some strings; its power comes from the grand vocals, particularly in the chorus when Prass layers multiple vocal takes over each other, that tell her story of a manipulative relationship so powerfully.

#61

Melody's Echo Chamber

Desert Horse

6992548

Quote

Desert Horse is like Breathe In, Breathe Out scaled up to 11 on every scale. There's more of everything: more screaming, more French, more haze and more vocal manipulation. Desert Horse is wild and I honestly have no idea what it's about but it's like a five minute psychedelic fever dream and I love it.

Solid update so far! The LMK remix is a cute girl but they all did their thing on it.

It took me a minute to get into Roll but I enjoy it a lot now! I think the Kaytranada remix is much better though.

TiA is alright. The video is excellent but the song doesn't really warrant many listens. Guess that's why its' in the first batch out

Just a Stranger is just the ultimate bop too :clap3:

And I your write up for Pick Up is great. Another great track :katie2:

aw thanks  i really can't be arsed with writeups this year so most of them are highkey shit  hopefully i step up my game for the albums

Honestly there were no clear standouts on Isolation, at least for me. I mean I do like some tracks better than the others but I don't think anything in particular was better than the rest hence Idk if I'd put anything on my own list. That said, Just a Stranger is THAT song :yas:

Also love The Distance, Roll and Pick Up :heart2:

maybe there are no clear standouts on Isolation because everything is a standout :somepoints:

Snatchie, US Girls, Melody's Echo Chamber :clap3:

I should probably listen to that new US Girls but their last album wasn't it.

I have Melody on the list but yeah, the Natalie album was a disappointment for me.

Posted

Troye's "Animal" is cute and I loooovvveee Charli's "Focus". Actually I kinda forgot about Charli on my year end list aside from 1999. She released a few wee bops. :clap3:

Posted

Rosalia, Melody, U.S. Girls, Natalie, Kimbra, Thom AND Travis

Make Believe is one of the strongest KKB songs this year.

Sugar & Spice is unbelievably catchy.

Pearly Gates and Lost are good but nowhere near my faves of the respective artists this year...

Posted

2nd > 1st > 3rd for sicko.

Nowhere2go ?

Pearly gates was an early favorite for me too.

Posted

Great sets, beautiful sets :clap3:

Don't wanna get into yet another Charli discussion because we've gone through our rankings so many times already so let me just say I'm glad Focus isn't higher :fan: Hoping for another Charli entry :eli:

I still wish Us was just as strong as IDESW :jonny: Imagine the slayage

Quiz, Make Believe, MALAMENTE, SICKO MODE, Sugar & Spice and Pearly Gates :alexz:

Silk City & Dua Lipa

Electricity

Quote

Dua kind of did that with a few of her collaborations this year huh? I really like the pitched vocals and the outro is pretty cool.

#59

Drake

Nice for What

6942421

Quote

Drake always delivers at least one good single. Last year it was Passionfruit and this year Murda Beatz went above and beyond on Nice for What's production. The Lauryn Hill sample carries most of the production.

listen here

#58

Yves Tumor & James K

Licking an Orchid

7131455

Quote

Licking an Orchid is a high-tension, sensual trip-hop song about S&M. The contrast between the frank, direct delivery of Yves' verses with the vulnerable, delicate chorus sung by James K highlights the song's exploration of the contrast between the delicate sensuality and the brazen rawness of love.

listen here

#57

Tove Styrke

On the Low

6941692

Quote

On the Low is a tender synthpop song about wanting to make a relationship public and take it to the next level. The production is subtle and distinctly different from the three singles released prior to this but the change of pace and the deftly fraught vocal delivery makes this song one of Styrke's best.

#56

Charli XCX

5 in the Morning

7011090

Quote

Who knew Charli could serve quality pop-trap? The use of autotune is surprisingly effective and 5 in the Morning is just really fun. This is Charli's best single this year.

listen here

#55

The Weeknd

Call Out My Name

6931013

Quote

Call Out My Name doesn't revolutionise The Weeknd's winning hurt-midtempo-R&B formula but why change something that works so effectively? Abel wanted his partner to put as much effort into the relationship as he did when they were together but wants her to need him as much as he still needs her now that they're apart. It's simple but it works and is kind of better than all of the Starboy singles.

#54

Snail Mail

Heat Wave

7165804

Quote

Okay listen I don't stan Snail Mail and her album was boring as hell but a good song is a good song and Heat Wave is a great song. It's a charming song about an unrequited love that ends with the realisation that Lindsay doesn't want a "sometimes" and instead wants to wait for a ~forever love~. What can I say? Heat Wave is charming and I really really like it.

Nobody

7046964

Quote

The first indication that maybe Be the Cowboy wasn't going to be Puberty 2 part 2, Nobody is quite simply a song about being lonely. With a soaring final chorus, Nobody excels at making loneliness fun.
