TheWayWeWere Posted December 15, 2018 Posted December 15, 2018 LMK Remix is so different from original and so so good :jonny: it bops! The Distance is flawless why on earth it wasn't lead SFOS is one of the tolerable tracks from HAH
ATRL Moderator madonnas Posted December 15, 2018 ATRL Moderator Posted December 15, 2018 I thought The Distance was cute at first but it is SUCH A GROWER. A classic Mariah song. The LMK Remix bangs too. The rest is cute but not my fave from those artists.

enxe Posted December 16, 2018 Posted December 16, 2018 The Distance, Just a Stranger & Sky Full of Song deserve the recognition (even though I didn't like SFOS that much when I first heard it)
ATRL Moderator Unoriginal Posted December 16, 2018 Author ATRL Moderator Posted December 16, 2018 i think this ten might be more questionable than 100-91 but it is what it is #90 Jessie Ware Overtime Quote This is almost reminiscent of some Devotion-era Jessie Ware material and I'm absolutely here for it, especially after Glasshouse. Overtime's chorus is infectious and I love the post-chorus. Not as good as Midnight but that's a career highlight so I wouldn't expect that from every single. listen here #89 Lykke Li deep end Quote Lykke Li going trap-pop was the plot twist I never expected. deep end is lyrically simple but the production and the song's chorus is really where the song shines. listen here #88 Bruno Mars & Cardi B Finesse Remix Quote There's so much to love about the Finesse Remix: Cardi's verse is joyously charismatic, the added production elements from the original make the song (which was already a highlight on 24K Magic) even better and the video is one of the best of the year. listen here #87 Moses Sumney Rank & File Quote I'm criminally unfamiliar with Moses' discography but this is an excellent song. I'm basically repeating what I said in the EP writeup but the lyrics detail the murder of Mike Brown and the protests following this. It's a political protest song done right. listen here #86 DJ Koze Seeing Aliens Quote Another DJ Koze song? So soon after Pick Up? Both Pick and Seeing Aliens are excellent and I'd have loved to have placed both higher than I've placed them but considering they were such late additions to the list, combined with my relative lack of familiarity with both compared to the rest of the list, ultimately stopped me from doing so. listen here #85 Rico Nasty Trust Issues Quote Rico's harsh delivery lends itself well to the production on Trust Issues; it's a show of confidence for the most part (Rico knows she's with the shit) but also reveals Rico's reluctance to trust people. listen here #84 Amber Mark Love Me Right Quote Amber Mark's best release to date, Love Me Right is a gorgeous R&B/neo-soul ballad about a failing relationship. The pre-chorus melody is beautiful and the song is lyrically great. The subtle buildup with each passing chorus to the glorious last minute is amazing. listen here #83 Janelle Monáe & Grimes Pynk Quote From its cover art to its lyrics to its video, Pynk makes no secret of its lyrical subject. The soft, sensual vocal delivery of the verses is in stark contrast to the guitar-fuelled chorus and the song's intimate, subtle production makes for Janelle's best single this year. listen here #82 Anteros Love Quote Apparently this is a 2017 single? Whoops. Too late to change it now and I need to support my local flops somewhere. I really enjoy the bridge. listen here #81 Yaeji One More Quote Though definitely not as good as her past singles, One More is still a really solid song which I find has a decent amount of replay value once it grew on me. listen here okay so i got really behind on this lmao. i have to do two more sets of ten today so yeah
mokitsu Posted December 16, 2018 Posted December 16, 2018 Overtime definitely better than her glasshouse material for me deep end is **** finesse remix is so good cardi's verse really took the song from a 5 to a 9 dj koze, amber

You lied about Midnight being better but yes Overtime is a bop. I should probably listen to Rico Nasty at some point.

Finesse (Remix) deserved to go #1 but it feels bigger than most #1s this year so it won at the end of the day (and most importantly it went #1 here, the only place where charts matter) Rank & File deserved better, Seeing Aliens a highlight, Love Me Right a cute girl, etc.

World Eater Posted December 16, 2018 Posted December 16, 2018 The Distance, Roll, Just a Stranger, Pick Up (although Seeing being higher than Pick Up is just...wrong) That 1-2-3-4-5-6 punch with #90-85 though Love Pynk as well, glad we agree that's her best song released ths year
ATRL Moderator Unoriginal Posted December 16, 2018 Author ATRL Moderator Posted December 16, 2018 this should've been up yesterday but i was busy #80 Cardi B, Bad Bunny & J Balvin I Like It Quote This is fun. Cardi B is the most charismatic rapper I've heard in a long time and I Like It really shows that. The "I like it like that" chant can sometimes be stuck in my head for ages. listen here #79 Troye Sivan Animal Quote Okay Troye and Ariel kind of snapped on this. The bridge is probably one of my favourites of the year. listen here #78 Charli XCX Focus Quote This has always been the better single from the Focus / No Angel dual release. I like it a lot mostly for its production I think. listen here #77 Ben Howard A Boat to an Island on the Wall Quote I'm not quite sure what the lyrics mean but the instrumental and the vocals are lovely and this is a really great song. listen here #76 Skee Mask 50 Euro to Break Boost Quote World Eater tells me this was a single and I trust him so. Honestly I'm not really sure how to describe this song but it'll probably be a lot higher than this if I do a 2018 update at some point. listen here #75 Empress Of I Don't Even Smoke Weed Quote I'm not sure if I like this ironically or legitimately? The synth breakdown after the chorus is equal parts cringey and good and rhyming "palm of your hand" with "palm of your hand" is probably a crime but this song grew on me a lot and I'd be lying to myself if i just completely ignored this. listen here #74 Jorja Smith Teenage Fantasy Quote RYM says this was released in June 2017 but Spotify says 2018? The video was uploaded in June 2017 as well so this is probably my fault for including this before I checked it was a 2018 single. Regardless, this is an excellent single and Jorja essentially drags teenage love as bullshit. listen here #73 CupcakKe Quiz Quote CupcakKe really stepped up her production game last year and that gave us her best song Cartoons. This year she released Quiz which, whilst not quite as good, is signature CupcakKe in every way. Her wordplay on Quiz is witty and entertaining. listen here #72 Maggie Rogers Fallingwater Quote Maggie Rogers made points on her 2017 EP and she continues to prove she's one of the most exciting up-and-coming artists with her best song to date. Fallingwater is a beautifully written ballad about a failed relationship and "rapid change". The vocals are emotional and the production -- courtesy of pop's new favourite Rostam Batmanglij -- is top notch. listen here #71 Miya Folick Thingamajig Quote I was anticipating new Miya music all year and Thingamajig might be one of the best songs in her (admittedly still brief) discography. I think it's about letting someone go but also part of it might be from a mother's perspective? I'm not 100% sure but I really like Miya's vocals on this. listen here ngl i'm kind of fed up of doing writeups which is why these are brief and barely talk about the songs but i've still got ten more to do today soooo

ATRL Moderator madonnas Posted December 16, 2018 ATRL Moderator Posted December 16, 2018 Some gr8 updates. why the hell do you think there are 72 songs better than Quiz, though?
potent Posted December 16, 2018 Posted December 16, 2018 Animal and Finesse Remix I should check more of Maggie Rogers, I only heard Give a Little this year which was good despite sounding very HAIM-copycat.
Vilppu Posted December 16, 2018 Posted December 16, 2018 rank & file a bit low hmm quiz and teenage fantasy slay. animal is fine too but i think it only works as a closer and not so much as a standalone track
