ATRL Moderator Unoriginal Posted December 12, 2018 Author ATRL Moderator Posted December 12, 2018 the blue things are supposed to be clouds don't judge me drawing with a laptop trackpad is hard x anyway this is a list of 19 EPs that I enjoyed this year, unranked because i'm indecisive but Jenny Hval and Hatchie would be the top two if it was ranked but instead it's just alphabetically ordered. it's arguable whether some of these are EPs or like tringles or something but i wanted to include them anyway Ben Howard Another Friday Night / Hot Heavy Summer / Sister Quote Released around three months after Noonday Dream, this three-track, ten minute EP has a guest appearance from Sylvan Esso; first track Another Friday Night is the standout. listen here Madison Beer As She Pleases Quote Am I trash for including this? Yes. Will I probably regret it after I post this? Yes. Does that change the fact that I have over 300 scrobbles of it? Nope. HeartLess, Fools and Dead are all good. listen here Moses Sumney Black in Deep Red, 2014 Quote Black in Deep Red makes no secret of its incredibly political nature across its nine-minute running time: Power? starts off as a rallying cry and standout Rank & File is one of the most striking political songs of this year, with lyrics condemning the police state and the acquittal of Mike Brown's murderer. listen here Iglooghost Clear Tamei / Steel Mogu Quote Following his 2017 album Neo Wax Bloom, the two EPs were released with plenty of additional lore material for the Iglooghost universe. Clear Tamei is slightly better than Steel Mogu. listen here Amber Mark Conexão Quote 2017's 3:33am was certainly enjoyable but it's clear that Conexão is a step in the right direction for Mark's sound; soulful and fun, single Love Me Right is the highlight of the EP. listen here Fleet Foxes Crack Up / In the Morning Quote If I can find a way to include Fleet Foxes in my Best Of I will. listen here Ravyn Lenae Crush Quote Okay I really really like this EP. Produced entirely by The Internet's Steve Lacy, who's featured on two of the EP's five songs, Crush is catchy, fun and easily one of the best EPs on this list. Sticky and The Night Song are my favourites. listen here Wednesday Campanella Galapagos Quote I only listened to this for the first time a few hours ago but seeing as this list is unranked I don't see a reason to not include it. The first track stood out to me on first listen though I'd have to revisit it a few more times to have anything substantial to say about this (although it's not like anything I've said above has been very impressive). listen here The Weeknd My Dear Melancholy, Quote Okay say what you will but this is a better body of work than Beauty Behind the Madness and Starboy. It's short, cohesive, filler-free and just generally a really solid EP. I love all the songs but favourites are probably Call Out My Name, Try Me and Privilege listen here okay that's the first ten EPs. i'll be posting the other nine really soon!
theblackestday Posted December 12, 2018 Posted December 12, 2018 Okay, you snapped. My payolas worked "I only listened to this for the first time a few hours ago but seeing as this list is unranked I don't see a reason to not include it."
mokitsu Posted December 12, 2018 Posted December 12, 2018 Madison and Iglooghost Ravyn and Amber getting on so many lists, whew they're winning
Vilppu Posted December 12, 2018 Posted December 12, 2018 ravyn, moses, wednesday slay you right about weeknd ep being better than his full albums but i'm not sure if that says more about the ep or the albums ?

ATRL Moderator Tsareena Posted December 13, 2018 ATRL Moderator Posted December 13, 2018 really liked Madison's ep. Amber and Ravyn of course serving talent. your cloud is also hideous xx
ATRL Moderator Unoriginal Posted December 13, 2018 Author ATRL Moderator Posted December 13, 2018 more of the same x Hozier Nina Cried Power Quote Nina Cried Power is very much in the same vein as Hozier's 2014 self-titled album in terms of style, though slightly more rock-y and singer-songwriter-y (but not in the horrible Ed Sheeran way) than that. It's cute! The first two tracks are the best two. listen here KAYTRANADA Nothing Like U / Chances Quote Instrumentals outsold. listen here Sudan Archives Sink Quote I only listened to this for the first time on Tuesday but this is an unranked list so why not include it anyway? I enjoyed Sudan's 2017 EP but I think I prefer this. Single Nont for Sale is the EP highlight. listen here Kimbra Songs from Primal Heart: Reimagined Quote This is nice. I always like hearing songs in a stripped back form and I also really like Hi Def Distance Romance so it's nice to see Kimbra acknowledging it despite not including it on Primal Heart. listen here Hatchie Sugar & Spice Quote EP OF THE YEAR ARRIVED. This is seriously excellent the consistency in quality across all five songs, the dream pop, the shoegaze influence, Cocteau Twins who? Hatchie really snapped here and I'm really excited to see what she releases next seeing as the artist behind last year's best EP/mini album ended up becoming a flop. In all seriousness though, Sugar & Spice contains five of the best dream pop songs of the year; they're well crafted and all-round highly enjoyable songs. I love all the songs and strongly recommend you listen to the entire EP but if I had to choose one song it'd be Sleep. listen here First Aid Kit Tender Offerings Quote I found Ruins enjoyable for the most part but I can understand why these four songs were left off the album. Nonetheless, if you enjoyed the slightly more commercial leanings of Ruins in comparison to the duo's previous albums, the Tender Offerings EP is a nice extension to the era. listen here Kamasi Washington The Choice Quote Kamasi Washington's secret EP is no less grand -- in both scale and accomplishment -- than its sister album Heaven & Earth. Across five songs and nearly forty minutes of bonus music, The Choice offers something substantially unique and enjoyable enough to stand on its own as an incredibly enjoyable EP as well as an accompaniment to Heaven & Earth. listen here Jenny Hval The Long Sleep Quote Probably my second favourite EP of the year? Though Blood Bitch is the only other release of Hval's I've herd, The Long Sleep (at least from what I've read) seems to take the best bits of all of Jenny's previous releases and combine them into this excellent four song, 23-minute EP. Single Spells is the clear standout here but the eleven-minute title track, which almost veers into drone territory, is also great. listen here Laurel Halo Tru / Opal / The Light Within You Quote This is actually a collaborative EP with someone else but I only care about Laurel. Continuing her streak of superb releases, Laurel Halo's second 2018 release is much more akin to her sound than Raw Silk Uncut Wood yet it's also distinctly separate. The EP explores UK Bass, a first for Halo, and does so very successfully. Opal is my favourite track here. listen here that's all for EPs! I'm going straight into the songs list tomorrow and there'll be no honourable mentions seeing as I, for some reason, decided it would be a good idea to do 100 songs x
Eeveelution Posted December 13, 2018 Posted December 13, 2018 Lots of great EPs. Aside from the ones that made my own list, Sudan and Jenny were good and deserved more listens from me.
Tom Vercetti Posted December 13, 2018 Posted December 13, 2018 Oh there's Sink. I like Laurel and haven't heard this ep yet I did listen to Raw Silk however but wasn't into it. I also keep seeing Kimbra and haven't gotten to her ep either. Hatchie, amber, weeknd, ravyn, moses
theblackestday Posted December 13, 2018 Posted December 13, 2018 You already know I stan all of these (except the three fads) "seems to take the best bits of all of Jenny's previous releases and combine them into this excellent four song" who said that
Pink Matter Posted December 13, 2018 Posted December 13, 2018 Haven't been much of an EPs guy this year but slay at Iglooghosts, Rayvn, Wednesday, and Abel in your first batch I've been craving some new Kaytranada so I have to get into that at some point. I also might check out the Amber Mark EP. I've seen a lot of y'all posting about that one.
TheWayWeWere Posted December 13, 2018 Posted December 13, 2018 Kaytranada I really need to listen that Hatchie girl, I saw her on few BOs already and her description sounds amazing
Wicked Posted December 13, 2018 Posted December 13, 2018 Hatchie the new it girl huh? I don't hate Hozier as much as everyone else (his voice kinda saves him from that) will take a listen to his EP.
volition Posted December 13, 2018 Posted December 13, 2018 Some great EPs in here, only one I missed is Hozier because he irritates me
Body Electrician Posted December 13, 2018 Posted December 13, 2018 I listened to MDM once and almost fell asleep.... can he come up with something else? I wanted to like The Long Sleep because Blood Bitch is one of my favourite albums ever but it really did what it said on the tin and lulled me into a coma... Hatchie
Vilppu Posted December 13, 2018 Posted December 13, 2018 hatchie was quite good tea jenny i wanted to like but... it's rly not for me. i appreciate what she was going for ig. also i thought FAK's album was a disappointment so if the ep is like an extension then thank you for saving my time ^-^
Mark Rih Posted December 13, 2018 Posted December 13, 2018 Tom countdown got me into Hatchie already, she's good
Blue Rose Posted December 13, 2018 Posted December 13, 2018 Abel Hozier why? Kamasi Washington wasn’t my cup of tea
Sbbmsve Posted December 13, 2018 Posted December 13, 2018 Ugh Kimbra appearing again We love AN accoustic EP of AN album (poor MassEducation). Also many many points at Jenny and Hatchie.
World Eater Posted December 13, 2018 Posted December 13, 2018 So much talent, Hatchie deserved Still need to listen to two or three of these
