Sbbmsve Posted December 23, 2018 Posted December 23, 2018 Quote This is what Dark Spring and Dive would soundlike if they were combined. Wait... the accuracy. This update is similar to my picks God Is A Woman is really her best single this year, thank u next wishes tbh. Publications hype Falling Into Me up but. Hot Pink >>>> Falling Into Me any day. Let’s see how will Grimes’ new album be like .
ATRL Moderator madonnas Posted December 23, 2018 ATRL Moderator Posted December 23, 2018 Love your Rae Morris choice. THAT my sisters is how you do a ballad. ISL2, Mariners, WAP, sisters are all good choices. I wouldn't pick Mariners and Sisters over the other singles tho. Hot PInk is a banger, but there are other great choices, SOPHIE definitely elevates it so I see why people would choose it. I'm surprised the snobby gays (no offense I consider myself one too) are going for GIAW, like idgi.
World Eater Posted December 23, 2018 Posted December 23, 2018 Oh wow @ Alien! We Appreciate Power, I Shall Love 2 and God is a woman, we stan Natalie served a contemporary r&b/gospel bop with Sisters, huh?
Tom Vercetti Posted December 23, 2018 Posted December 23, 2018 Quote This is 100% too high but it's too late to change it now I only just heard Alien around a week ago. It's alright. I Shall Love 2 shook the #indie community.
theblackestday Posted December 23, 2018 Posted December 23, 2018 Poor WAP MAC a gorgeous girl, I think we've ALL seen the light Alien best shoegaze song of all time. MBV and slowdive couldn't do it, why? God Is a Woman, Hot Pink and ISL2
ultraviolence.xx Posted December 23, 2018 Posted December 23, 2018 whewww, what a ten dancing with character, whew mac and cheese taking the inferior position a li en! romance is lowkey too low but i'll take it GIAW, feministiana did THAT glad to see cradle getting love! love that song
ATRL Moderator Unoriginal Posted December 23, 2018 Author ATRL Moderator Posted December 23, 2018 #20 Lykke Li hard rain Quote hard rain was one of the only songs on so sad so sexy that actually worked but it worked incredibly well. I guess this was Rostam's year because, to my knowledge, this is his second appearance on my countdown (after Fallingwater). The vocal manipulation on this is excellent, the lyrics are the best on so sad so sexy and the final thirty seconds are divine. Lykke proves with hard rain that sometimes restraint is sometimes the key to a good payoff. listen here #19 Anna von Hausswolff The Truth, The Glow, The Fall Quote A twelve-minute epic, The Truth, The Glow, The Fall builds slowly -- the first minute is almost silent and the first third of the song is slow, building atmosphere and layering Anna's eerie vocals before making way for the marching second third of the song and the signature organ before opening up to an ethereal, ambient mid section and a haunting, wailing final section. It's a grand song on an equally grand album. listen here #18 Yves Tumor Noid Quote If this isn't the most upbeat Yves Tumor song I know it's certainly one of them. Noid, short for paranoid, is about Yves' relationship with the police in America and does so with excellent effectiveness. Yves is anxious but equally critical of the police force ("they call it a sickness // ptsd, depression") as he is aware of his fear ("i'm scared for my life // they don't trust us). Behind the danceable nature of the song are some dark lyrics; it's a stark contrast but it's what makes the song as good as it is. listen here #17 Christine and the Queens 5 dollars Quote Traditionally, if songs don't vilify their sex worker characters, they certainly don't paint them in a good light. Christine flips this concept on its head entirely, celebrating the protagonist of its story as a proud, unashamed sex worker who loves their job. It's a concept so unique, so refreshing and so needed in today's pop landscape and that's what makes 5 dollars as stunning as it is. It's little things that combine to make 5 dollars so good: "I grieve by dying every night baby" is a nod to how orgasms are referred to as 'la petite mort' in France -- 'the little death'. The production and the background vocals are great but the lyrics are truly what elevates 5 dollars above the standard of a traditional pop song listen here #16 Kacey Musgraves Slow Burn Quote Slow Burn is about moving away from the close-minded, traditional values of small-town living and welcoming the bigger world into your life; taking things at your own pace and living life your way. It's autobiographical, warm, welcoming and an impressively good welcome into Kacey's universe. listen here #15 Courtney Barnett City Looks Pretty Quote Courtney is lonely on City Looks Pretty; despite the impressiveness of the new city she finds herself in, being away from what she knows is isolating. It's sharp, witty and the closest Courtney came to capturing the magic of 'Sometimes I Sit and Think'. The outro is cathartic and the change of pace is surprisingly effective, cleverly highlighting the sense of loneliness Courtney feels on the song. listen here #14 Laurel Halo Raw Silk Uncut Wood Quote How much can I say about a ten minute ambient piece? I'm not sure but the fact remains that I adore this. It's grand, almost cinematic, beautiful, encompassing and engulfing. It's its own world in the same way I Shall Love 2 is, albeit one you can't place or describe as well. Raw Silk is a gorgeous composition and easily my favourite ambient piece of the year. listen here #13 Jenny Hval Spells Quote Spells is jazzy, ambient, poppy and synthy across its six-and-a-half-minute length. Hval's immediately recognisable vocals lift and rise gently in the chorus with Jenny reaching into her higher register and backing herself with a choir of what sounds like more Jennys. The chorus is absolutely the most arresting section of the song but the jazz inflections in the instrumentation are also of note. listen here #12 Father John Misty Please Don't Die Quote Please Don't Die stands in stark contrast to Mr Tillman, the first single from 'God's Favorite Customer'. Whereas the latter is light in tone and instrumentation, seeing the funny side of Tillman's breakdown, Please Don't Die is dark; Josh sings about his depression and the suicidal thoughts he experienced staying at the hotel. Interestingly, the chorus seems to be told from his wife Emma's perspective, speaking to him and asking him not to die. It's simple and the lyrics are direct but their frankness is what makes the song so excellent, along with the simplistic but equally lush instrumentation. listen here #11 Julia Holter Words I Heard Quote Despite the specificity of Words I Heard's lyrics, you question whether it's actually about anything specific. Regardless, Holter's ability to conjure and create such vivid, melancholic imagery that complements the string-heavy, rich instrumentation is unparraleled. The buildup and release is strikingly cathartic, as are Holter's vocals -- particularly with sections such as the ones surrounding "save our souls" and "i love you in the city of man" -- and you can't help but wish that the release after "i love you in the city of man" would go on endlessly. The piano is desolate and the arrangements on this track in general are nothing short of breathtaking. Although it falls just short of the top ten, Words I Heard is undeniably one of the most affecting songs of the year and one I'll be listening to for months to come. listen here hi! if you didn't know, i'm revealing my whole list tonight. 10-6 and 6-1 are coming soon so if you're interested make sure you keep a watch on my posts in here! any top ten guesses?

theblackestday Posted December 23, 2018 Posted December 23, 2018 Kinda shook at Ms. Lykke making it this high, especially because it's higher than certain songs Disappointed but not surprised @ Noid being this low (I actually am surprised) - The Weave, The Snatching, The Baldness - Slow Burn - Raw Silk Uncut Cסck - Words I Heard Sumn ...classics after classics. Julia being snubbed from the top 10 though Please Don't Die...

Dom Posted December 23, 2018 Posted December 23, 2018 Oh wow, lovely to see God Is A Woman here, truly a great pop song. Good thing Camila Cabello turned it down, she would have ruined it. Hard Rain is an amazing song, Lykke did great on it. Mariners is not my fave Lana release this year tbh, I liked VENICE BITCH more.
Eeveelution Posted December 23, 2018 Posted December 23, 2018 I don’t use xtine and I can’t understand her lyrics in French or English but it’s cute that she made a sex positive bop like that. Slow Burn and Noid are 11/10, ready for your top 10. ❤️
World Eater Posted December 24, 2018 Posted December 24, 2018 Not gonna focus on negativity () so I will just say that many points have been made with hard rain, Noid, 5 dollars, Slow Burn, Spells and Words I Heard (which I'm shocked isn't in the top 10 ) being included. Haven't listened that much to either Anna or Laurel, but I do appreciate them both. Perched for your top 10
Pink Matter Posted December 24, 2018 Posted December 24, 2018 Too many faves to count! You snapped with this set Fave would have to be Sisters and Noid
