potent Posted December 21, 2018 Posted December 21, 2018 Big God is great! I wasn't so into it at first but it became one of my faves on the album. Space Cowboy and The Good Side too
Lazuli Posted December 21, 2018 Posted December 21, 2018 Falling Into Me is a slay Space Cowboy, The Good Side, Disarray Big God is just okay for me
ATRL Moderator Unoriginal Posted December 21, 2018 Author ATRL Moderator Posted December 21, 2018 i'm bad at sticking to a schedule what can i say #40 Christine and the Queens La marcheuse Quote I much prefer the French version of this to the English one although both are amazing. Like many of Christine's songs, I couldn't tell you exactly what this is about but the conviction with which Christine delivers the vocals and the gorgeous, understated production make this an excellent single. listen here #39 SOPHIE Faceshopping Quote Arguably the strongest of SOPHIE's singles so far, Faceshopping is explosive and confident from the moment the synths kick in. It doesn't let up for any of its four minute run time and the unexpectedly excellent bridge is a welcome addition to the song. listen here #38 JPEGMAFIA & Yung Midpack Rainbow Six Quote The left-wing Hades snapped on this. Rainbow Six is cold, almost industrially so, in both its production and its delivery. The production is really what shines on this. listen here #37 Wume Shadow Quote Songs like Shadow are where Wume seem to shine. It's more pure electronic than most of their previous material and it seems clear to me that this is where their sound - mainly a mix of electronics and drums with sparing vocals - works best. listen here #36 Ariana Grande thank u, next Quote thank u, next becomes an empowerment anthem in its second verse and that's where the song really blooms. It's fun, confident and catchy. What's not to like? listen here #35 Tove Styrke Sway Quote Tove Styrke's synthpop works best on Sway. Lyrically it's not more than a love story but the production and simple euphoria the song exudes makes it the great single that it is. listen here #34 The 1975 Love It If We Made It Quote 2018 was disappointing for the 1975 in terms of releasing quality material but I can't deny that they snapped on Love It. I've rewritten what I'm trying to say about this song like three times but it sounds like i'm dragging it so just know that I do like it. listen here #33 Calvin Harris & Dua Lipa One Kiss Quote This is pretty much universally liked right? What can I say that hasn't been said before? I'm actually just fed up of doing writeups honestly. listen here #32 Earl Sweatshirt & Navy Blue The Mint Quote The Infrared reference alone makes this deserving of being so high. listen here #31 Low Fly Quote Is this about a breakup? I think so. The understated, minimal production backs the delicate, fractured vocals of Mimi Parker on Low's best single this year. listen here will reply to everyone's comments and comment on other people's countdowns in a bit x i'm kind of super fed up of writeups already and i still have 30 more songs + 50 albums and HMs so
World Eater Posted December 21, 2018 Posted December 21, 2018 Hoping to see Christine at least one more time As much as I like La marcheuse (and also agree that French version is better), there were many better tracks on the album Wig at Faceshopping, Rainbow Six, thank u, next, LIIWMI and One Kiss Didn't expect to see Fly this high Can't say I'm mad tho, because it's my favorite track from the album
Vilppu Posted December 21, 2018 Posted December 21, 2018 Quote i'm kind of super fed up of writeups already should have cut the lists in half faceshopping the best song here... she should have made immaterial a single too so she could snatch an even higher spot

Wicked Posted December 21, 2018 Posted December 21, 2018 TU,N got stale quickly because after one listen you realize it's still impersonal and bland. The name dropping doesn't do much except remind you who she's dated. It reminds me of Ed Sheeran tbh. It sounds nice though. Faceshopping & The Mint are my favs

Lazuli Posted December 22, 2018 Posted December 22, 2018 Quote 2018 was disappointing for the 1975 in terms of releasing quality material Why tell lies? ? Fly, One Kiss, thank u, next, Sway, Faceshopping and La Marcheuse ?
TheWayWeWere Posted December 22, 2018 Posted December 22, 2018 La marcheuse :jonny: yeah, french version is superior one :alexz: TUN Sway is flawless
volition Posted December 22, 2018 Posted December 22, 2018 thank u next suuucks but thankfully there is one kiss, sophie, earl, peggy, and low to redeem the section!
Eeveelution Posted December 22, 2018 Posted December 22, 2018 Great set! I like everything except Wume (I don't know it) and La Marcheuse (I don't remember it).
theblackestday Posted December 22, 2018 Posted December 22, 2018 The serves with Faceshopping, Rainbow Six, One Kiss, and the worst song on Double Negative, ugh s
Mark Rih Posted December 22, 2018 Posted December 22, 2018 Wooo Ariana and Calvin/Dua and The 1975, yes everyone is snubbing them, ugh
ATRL Moderator madonnas Posted December 22, 2018 ATRL Moderator Posted December 22, 2018 I've never heard a Low song in my life. Faceshopping is my ave in this list. The rest is HM worthy like the CATQ song and TUN and One Kiss but they still bop.
Pink Matter Posted December 22, 2018 Posted December 22, 2018 Chris, Sohpie, Dua, Earl, and Low I find TUN to be overrated
Dom Posted December 22, 2018 Posted December 22, 2018 YASSSSSS AT THANK U NEXT, WHAT A SONG. ARI DID THAT. One Kiss was a summer bop.
Uncatena Posted December 22, 2018 Posted December 22, 2018 La marcheuse/The walker is overrated and thats that on that if doesnt matter isnt on this list im gonna set fire to your list x Faceshopping gave me plastic surgery after one listen, her power Sway is on my list too, our minds. A SONG Love it if we made it is a modern anthem thank u next is a serve Wume
Body Electrician Posted December 22, 2018 Posted December 22, 2018 One Kiss is the most lifeless song ever.. like the guy who caused my families acc*ident... LIIWMI
potent Posted December 22, 2018 Posted December 22, 2018 Christine and The 1975 best from this set Not familiar with or not a fan of the others, I'd be interested to check Tove Styrke though.
ATRL Moderator Tsareena Posted December 22, 2018 ATRL Moderator Posted December 22, 2018 la marcheuse faceshopping whew a single... girl I- that cover for rainbow six thank u next sway, love it if we made it ? , one kiss a bop
Kevin2803 Posted December 23, 2018 Posted December 23, 2018 One Kiss is cute, but one of Dua's weakest songs thank u, next
ATRL Moderator Unoriginal Posted December 23, 2018 Author ATRL Moderator Posted December 23, 2018 #30 Grimes & HANA We Appreciate Power Quote This is 100% too high but it's too late to change it now. I LOVED it the first two or so weeks it was out and then forgot about it completely. I relistened to it a few times to do this writeup a few days ago and it's fine but possibly a minute too long. listen here #29 Natalie Prass Sisters Quote Sisters is very soulful and mature anthem of female solidarity. The production almost has jazzy elements to it which I love. The lyrics are simple but they do what they intend to do and the anthemic chorus is great. listen here #28 Rae Morris Dancing with Character Quote Rae said this is about an old couple she knew in a local bar who used to dance together most nights. One of the partners died but the other half still goes and dances because it reminds him of her and if that isn't the purest, most heartfelt song of the year I don't know what is. listen here #27 Lana Del Rey Mariners Apartment Complex Quote When Mariners Apartment Complex first came out I really didn't like it but thankfully I came to my senses and realised this is probably her second best lead single. Lyrically this is better than almost anything from Lust for Life and the production calls back to Honeymoon and Ultraviolence, particularly in the last minute. It's a genuinely stunning track that has an impressive amount of replay value even still and will certainly go down as one of Lana's finest songs to date. listen here #26 Julia Holter I Shall Love 2 Quote I Shall Love 2 builds to a glorious crescendo beginning about halfway into the track. It swells rather than explodes and blooms into such a wonderful release you can't help but marvel at just how beautiful the song is. It's its own little world that you're leaving as soon as you've entered it but, for the five minutes you're there, it's pure bliss. listen here #25 Beach House Alien Quote Alien sweetie I'm so sorry you were left off 7 it's not what you deserve. This is what Dark Spring and Dive would sound like if they were combined. listen here #324 Ex:Re Romance Quote Romance is about a hookup: a cold, empty hookup where Daughter frontwoman Elena feels used and uncomfortable. It's an unsettling story backed by incredible ambient production that is almost slightly house-y. listen here #23 Ariana Grande God is a woman Quote Ariana's best single of the year is undeniably God is a woman. The production, the vocals and the stunning choral outro make this one of Grande's strongest singles to date, on which she celebrates female sexual liberation and domination in the bedroom. listen here #22 Adrianne Lenker cradle Quote A simple but effective folk song that describes two people unwilling to communicate at the end of a relationship. The chorus is beautiful and the production is suitably excellent. listen here #21 Let's Eat Grandma Hot Pink Quote SOPHIE and Let's Eat Grandma snapped on this. Using pink as a symbolism for feminism and the embrace of both masculinity and femininity, Let's Eat Grandma singers Rosa and Jennny sing over signature SOPHIE electronics on their strongest single to date. listen here
