Vilppu Posted December 12, 2018 Author Posted December 12, 2018 me after scamming my readers for sympathy posts knowing damn well i will start it later today x
Vilppu Posted December 12, 2018 Author Posted December 12, 2018 so... what now since i'm yet to do anything other than a fake meltdown, maybe it's time for an official introduction? welcome to the correct best of thread. this one is correct because i made it. there are 3 pages of other best ofs but they're not correct because i didn't make those. i'll be listing my top 15 + 15 honourable mentions albums and top 20 + 20 honourable mentions songs. could probably just say top 30/40 respectively but i don't wanna put myself through the mental struggle of an excessive ranking AND writing more about the shlt on lower positions. maybe if they were better ! due to the almost complete lack of interest last year i decided not to post a kpop song list. that will be exclusively done here later, think like december 30 to early january. anywho we shall get going HONOURABLE MENTIONS / ALBUMS Quote Anna Calvi – Hunter Aseul – Asobi Auri – Auri Behemoth – I Loved You at Your Darkest CLC – Black Dress Daichi Miura – Kyūtai Daughters – You Won’t Get What You Want The Internet – Hive Mind Let’s Eat Grandma – I’m All Ears Noname – Room 25 Obliteration – Cenotaph Obscure Preoccupations – New Material Tierra Whack – Whack World U.S. Girls – In a Poem Unlimited Wednesday Campanella – Galapagos 15 albums/eps/mixtapes/projects which had more than one track that were pretty good but i didn't spend enough time with them, they didn't have much replay value, they were objectively impressive but eventually not totally my type or didn't age all that well. a sample track linked for each one. a mocking mention to dirty computer which was top 5 when it dropped and now didn't even make top 30... that's sad huh.
Tom Vercetti Posted December 12, 2018 Posted December 12, 2018 Dirty Computer is really this years Masseduction huh. Understandable HMs (Except for Cenotaph!).
Eeveelution Posted December 12, 2018 Posted December 12, 2018 (edited) Everyone saying DC aged like milk... if y’all would look back at everything I’ve been saying and preaching and praying and saying. A couple of these deserve more but most of the ones I’ve heard are indeeed very HM-y. Edited December 12, 2018 by Eeveelution
World Eater Posted December 12, 2018 Posted December 12, 2018 Noname i Tierra to straszne nudziary, sorry not sorry Album The Internet zdecydowanie zbyt monotonny jak na prawie godzinę trwania, ale przynajmniej single były super. Z tego zestawu chyba najbardziej mi się podobają U.S. Girls, Wednesday Campanella (koncertowa topka roku ), Let's Eat Grandma i Daughters.

Vilppu Posted December 12, 2018 Author Posted December 12, 2018 ALBUMS 15-13 15. Kimbra – Primal Heart Quote Western pop music has been in complete shambles for quite a while now. All it takes is one look at the base section where threads such as „when was the last time your fave had an 80+ metascore” seem to be steadily replacing „when was the last time your fave had a #1 smasha” and where the annual „is [insert current year] the worst year in music ever” question was posted a good week ahead of its usual schedule. Personally, I don’t think it’s all that different from a decade ago, we may have a higher amount of really ****ty trends cough tropical house cough but pop song has always been something really difficult to create. Or maybe rather pop song is something very easy to create but a good pop song is unusual, why do you think barely anyone gets it right. Kimbra did, and more than once at that, as „Primal Heart” is filled with tracks which have actual melodies and memorable choruses. It’s far less theatrical and overblown than her previous works but she still has what to takes to charismatically lead the tracks as well as not become the main actor. What pop songs often do wrong is they over-rely on the performer degrading the production and instruments to a supporting role. Kimbra knows that’s not the way to go and as skilled a vocalist she is, she knows when to shut up and let the backing track do its thing. This is not a perfect album, it’s quite far from it actually – the slower tracks aren’t exciting and some parts feel somewhat cheaply produced – but the pure joy of someone finally understanding what pop is about made it shine a lot brighter than many artistically superior records for me. Standouts: Top of the World, Like They Do on the TV, Lightyears 14. Melody’s Echo Chamber – Bon voyage Quote The world’s most infamous end of the world date which inspired that godawful movie I remember my mom falling asleep to which I found quite amusing given something explodes there approximately once every three seconds. Trump’s presidency. Brexit. Countless terrorist attacks, from Eagles of Death Metal’s concerts in Paris through the Pulse club to Ariana Grande’s Manchester performance. Kylie Minogue dying and getting replaced by a lookalike because whoever thought „Kiss Me Once” and „Golden” were acceptable to release cannot be the same person who came up with „Impossible Princess” and „Body Language”. The rise of flat earthers and anti-vaxxers. It’s quite hard to believe how many things happened in between Melody’s Echo Chamber’s self-titled debut album and „Bon voyage”. And yet the latter still only has seven songs, of which three were revealed long before the record dropped. I imagine her fans cried for days when this project actually materialised and God knows I absolutely love artists who troll their fans so even if this weren’t the great album that it is, I would still stan purely on an ideological basis. Standouts: Desert Horse; Quand Les Larmes D'un Ange Font Danser La Neige; Visions of Someone Special, on a Wall of Reflections 13. Young Fathers – Cocoa Sugar Quote Thank me for the honesty. It's just sad that many others in the best of section aren’t facing reality, being genuine and admitting their true feelings about „Cocoa Sugar”. I am the only one to speak out on the superior quality of the music. Which isn't a surprise, since I have a true understanding of music and have proven time after time that my taste can be trusted. I won't be tough on newer listeners because this is their first taste of Young Fathers, and that's clearly who this album was intended for. It's the older fans that should be ashamed of themselves for not defending such a national treasure. As for being delighted by this album and Young Fathers, I mirror those sentiments. It feels amazing because this is a group I've followed and respected as artists, creators, innovators, etc. for years and it honestly seemed like they were on an uphill trajectory and „Cocoa Sugar” immediately cemented their ascension into excellence. Oh well. Standouts: In My View, Turn, Toy
Vxspertine Posted December 12, 2018 Posted December 12, 2018 Bon voyage SNAPPED We stan french excellence Screaming at the caption
Body Electrician Posted December 12, 2018 Posted December 12, 2018 LEG and US Girls only honourable mentions? I gave Bon voyage a few spins and remember liking a couple songs from it (particularly Quand Les Larmes) but it didn't really stick with me throughout the year
Temporal Posted December 12, 2018 Posted December 12, 2018 Ugh, gr8 picks from Primal Heart! I love Kimbra but I only use like 4 songs from that album tbh. Poem Unlimited and Let's Eat Grandma deserved better

That's what she gets for putting out 7 songs in almost as many years. Kimbra snapped yes she did. Those are the best songs too. Though I hope you're not shading Version of Me and Past Life when you say "slower songs". Good spot for miss young fathers

theblackestday Posted December 12, 2018 Posted December 12, 2018 (edited) Oh wow, okay, so as for the honorable mentions,I loved a bunch of these, some deserved better The Internet album was a snoozefest and New Material was underwhelming. Tierra Whack is a worthy HM but nothing more, I love the concept of her album but it doesn't change the fact that the songs feel underdeveloped. I am rooting for her though. Room 25 is quite overrated imo but it's still pretty good, so also a worthy HM. I never revisited Hunter because I didn't feel the need to? One listen was sufficient for me but I did enjoy it quite a bit. and Dirty Computer was aged from day one, I guess I was too ahead of my time...just like with my Masseduction hatred, my mind I tried forcing Primal Heart on myself for awhile but then realized it wasn't really my thing, but I absolutely love Real Life. gorgeous closer I'm screaming at the Bon Voyage and Cocoa Sugar writeups. Both albums got what they deserved Edited December 13, 2018 by theblackestday
ATRL Moderator Unoriginal Posted December 12, 2018 ATRL Moderator Posted December 12, 2018 I got over the Internet album pretty quickly but I did enjoy it for like two weeks so an HM seems fair. Whack World was in interesting idea but it feels so constrained to its concept that the songs suffer Hunter was cute the one time I listened to it, should probably check it out again some time. I see at least two albums on that HM list that should've made it to the main list but the Cocoa Sugar and Bon Voyage writeups Lightyears a highlight on Primal Heart though? I think not
Mark Rih Posted December 13, 2018 Posted December 13, 2018 That stunning album cover and your write up made me interested about Kimbra album, will check out tomorrow
volition Posted December 13, 2018 Posted December 13, 2018 Loving the HMs, especially Daughters, and what a great set of 3. Primal Heart is not my favourite album of hers, but it feels the most cohesive and has some standout tracks, like Top of the World, Real Life (and HDDR deserved a cute bonus placement). Love the Melody and Young Fathers albums too and think they're pretty underrated.
thecptz Posted December 13, 2018 Posted December 13, 2018 only heard whack world the latter half of WW >>>>>>>>> the first half for me
Blue Rose Posted December 13, 2018 Posted December 13, 2018 Top20 for Young Fathers is perfect Hunter & I’m All Ears being honorable mentions are also perfect I didn’t really connect with Noname’s album.
ATRL Moderator madonnas Posted December 13, 2018 ATRL Moderator Posted December 13, 2018 A lot of your HMs are more deserving than PH which is still good but kinda a disappointment.
K$Ellie Posted December 13, 2018 Posted December 13, 2018 Let's Eat Grandma deserved to make the list Primal Heart is cute enough. Not many standouts but I like Human, TOTW and TV
