Mr. Loco Posted December 29, 2018 Posted December 29, 2018 One Kiss I love to see it charting high in many countdowns ?
Eeveelution Posted December 29, 2018 Posted December 29, 2018 Good top 20! I haven't heard like three random electronic songs but I like most everything else. That's an interesting number 1 for sure, can't say I remember it but at least it's unique. Focus being that high is unexpected, but it's what she deserves, Interesting Yves choice but that is one of my faves on the album. Lady is Kpop SOTY indeed.

Lady really is one of the best Kpop songs this year. Who woulda thought "na na na na na, na na na LADY" would be such a great hook. Lean 4 Real is my second favorite on Playboi Carti's album, though as a whole it lacks standouts and is more about the feeling of the album. Great Charli and sophie choices. Pop 2 aside, Focus is the best this year. That part in lady is v catchy. I'll get around to the die lit standouts later. 16 hours ago, Vilppu said: stop @theblackestday gonna think he has impact ?? love this top 20, a really fun collection of different styles, most of these are my top or at least runner-up picks from these artists too, i'm glad whole new world got so high in particular, it absolutely knocks but is largely overlooked. the playboi carti song is an unexpected #1, i think i'd need more listens to fully get it, and charli so high is a pleasant surprise too perched for albums ^-^ I could've played it safe and gone with a IYKYK #1 but lean has more personal plays with me so I stuck by that. Whole New World has always been the highlight for me tho the middle sections of SOPHIE's album has been picking up. 15 hours ago, potent said: Honey making it to the top 20 here Those Beach House and MGMT songs are good, I think they have better though. Focus A great one from Charli, but honestly I'd say it only outsold is 5ITM (which is very easy to do.) I don't use the 1st version of Honey but the deep house version was more of my element. 5itm along with 1999 are in the bottom tier of xcx singles but I still like things about them. 14 hours ago, Invisibility said: Focus really is THAT song, appealing to gays, straights, gals and everyone in-between whew SOPHIE top 10, and with a controversial pick? And I'm pretty surprised at One Kiss in your top 10 When I first heard Prom / King it gave me early SOTY senses. ATRL Moderator madonnas Posted December 30, 2018 ATRL Moderator Posted December 30, 2018 oh wait just saw your post, do it!!
Tom Vercetti Posted December 30, 2018 Author Posted December 30, 2018 1 hour ago, madonnas said: Are you doing an albums list? Yeah I'm gonna do it now. - I'm just gonna this simple and brief since this year I'm not all that invested enough in the albums to have many strong opinions over. This list may be controversial due to the order but don't take it seriously. Some of these positions are interchangeable. I'll post hms of albums that missed my list tomorrow along with the last set.
Tom Vercetti Posted December 30, 2018 Author Posted December 30, 2018 50. George Clanton - Slide (Synthpop/Chillwave) Although he had a top 10 song of the year, the rest of album could not follow suit. Key Tracks: Livin Loose, Make It Forever, Dumb Spoiler 49. Julia Holter - Aviary (Progressive Pop/Art Pop) I really wanted to like this more but it's just too extra for its own good. There's not enough enjoyable musical moments to cover up its ambition and i'm not gonna pretend that I enjoy sitting through 7-8 minute tracks of Chaitius and Everyday Is An Emergency. There's a mix of both beautiful moments and distracting moments that are a chore to get through. Key Tracks: Turn the Light On, Whether, Les Jeux to You, I Shall Love 2, Words I Heard Spoiler 48. Saba - Care For Me (Concious Hip Hop/Jazz Rap) A step up from his previous album but still leaves more to be desired. Key Tracks: Busy / Sirens, Grey, Prom / King Spoiler 47. Honnda - Maraschino Mic Drop (Wonky Deconstructed Club) My favorite thing from Orange Milk Records this year. Spastic in nature with jerky production and amusing side vocals. Key Tracks: It's a Fox, Dizney Flip, Megga Millionz Spoiler 46. Hop Along - Bark Your Head Off, Dog (Indie Rock) The fact that this was the only indie rock album from a female fronted band I liked this year says enough about what I think about the current state of its genre. Key Tracks: How Simple, Not Abel, Prior Things Spoiler 45. Anderson .Paak - Oxnard (Neo-Soul/West Coast Hip Hop) I don't want to say the album cover jinxed the music but it's like... not as lively as Malibu, despite having extra collaborations this time around. Releasing a summer-vibe'd album near the winter is also a strange take. Key Tracks: The Chase, Tints, 6 Summers, Cheers Spoiler 44. Chief Keef - Back From The Dead 3 (Drill) The weakest in his mixtape trilogy but still above his recent studio albums. Continues the same "experimental" approach. Key Tracks: Just What it Be Like, Bestie, Gated, Booty Call Spoiler 43. Skee Mask - Compro (Breakbeat/Ambient Techno) Ngl I prefer his eps from last year over this but it's an improvement from his debut album. I temporarily use this to fill the void of another year without a Boards Of Canada release. Key Tracks: Session Add, 50 Euro To Break Boost, Via Sub Mids, Flyby Vfr Spoiler 42. Machine Girl - The Ugly Art (Digital Hardcore) I know people who go crazy over his music but he always was just fine to me. His music is generally disorderly and in your face. Key Tracks: Kill Screen, Necro Culture Vulture, F**k Your Guns Spoiler 41. Sleep - The Sciences (Stoner Metal/Doom Metal) This release is one of those big comeback albums i.e Wildflower, Science Fiction etc. They know their audience and releasing it exactly on 4/20 got the job done in getting attention. It's no Dopesmoker but again not much is an hour long riff. If you ever feel the need to fade out to then put this on. Key Tracks: Marijuanaut's Theme, Giza Butler, The Botanist Spoiler 40. The Caretaker - Everytime At The End Of Time Stage 4 (Turntable Music/Sound Collage) Depressive sound collage that resembles time slowing down and becoming more of a wrecked up state due to Dementia. Key Tracks: I guess all of them since playing just one singular track won't make much sense. . https://thecaretaker.bandcamp.com/ 39. Marie Davidson - Working Class Woman (Minimal Synth/Tech House) Spoken Word albums generally aren't things I would really listen much to on the regular but it is unique in its presentation. The instrumentals here are engaging. Key Tracks: Work It, The Psychologist, So Right Spoiler 38. Clarence Clarity - Think:Peace (Glitch Pop/Alternative R&B) Justice for Leave Earth! But on a serious note, this is more straightforward and safe than his ambitious debut No Now. There's more common structure and pop'ish choruses than ever, which results to me in not much standout/memorable material. When I first heard No Now I was wow'd but with Think:Peace I didn't get that same feeling. The lows here also stand out (why he added Fold'em which is clearly the worst song here) idk why. Key Tracks: We Change, Naysayer Magick Obeyer, Next Best Thing, SAME? Spoiler 37. Young Fathers - Cocoa Sugar (Neo Soul/Indietronica) Their artwork has been on point. Their ability to blend a wide variety of musical styles is also noteworthy. I've never been much of a fan of their past music but Cocoa Sugar held up for me a bit. Key Tracks: Fee Fi, In My View, Toy, Border Girl, Spoiler 36. Mitski - Be The Cowboy (Indie Rock/Art Pop) I'm prepared to have stones thrown at me by the indieheauxs around here but I stand by it as I don't have strong positive opinions about this album. I'm just not attached to a bunch of these songs. Short length tracks are nothing new from her but here it doesn't feel as inviting as Puberty 2. I will give her credit for making her most "diverse" album and not sounding entirely one note like some others acclaimed indie rock albums this year. Her songwriting is also great still. Key Tracks: Geyser, Why Didn't You Stop Me, Remember My Name, Washing Machine Heart Spoiler 35. Anna Von Hauswolff - Dead Magic (Neoclassical Darkwave) This is one of those albums where you have to really be in the mood for in playing from start to finish. For that reason I haven't played this often but when I did, her dreary atmosphere was pretty convincing. Key Tracks: The Truth, The Glow, The Fall, The Mysterious Vanishing Of Electra, Ugly and Vengeful Spoiler 34. Parquet Courts - Wide Awake (Art Punk/Indie Rock) Their music isn't groundbreaking since they clearly take influence from earlier essential post punk bands but I still find this album to be on the fun side. I've mentioned earlier how music + politics aren't favorable in this day and age but they have a way of making their music not so serious sounding. Key Tracks: Total Football, Wide Awake, Almost Had To Start A Fight Spoiler 33. Rosalia - El mal querer (Flamenco Pop/Alternative R&B) Language barriers have never stopped me from enjoying the music. Last year I paid Rosalia little to no mind from her so some reason. This year seemed to be a great opportunity to get into her work since El mal querer is viewed as both her and flamenco pop's breakout moment. The sequencing of this album is v organized in a way that allows her to tell us her story about the premonition and outcome of marrying a no-good partner. There's dramatic moments and unexpected samples that can be neat upon the first listen. Interested in what's next for her. Key Tracks: Malamente, Pienso en tu Mira Di Ni Nombre, Maldicion Spoiler 32. Janelle Monae - Dirty Computer (Contemporary R&B/Art Pop) I appreciate its themes of black female queerness in America but this just doesn't hit me now as it did within its first week hype. The problem for me are the hooks as with time passing on, they just don't stick. "Crazy Classic Life" is the worst offender of this, but there's other suspects throughout. This album sounds simplified in a way to appeal to a broader audience and lacks a mystique that The ArchAndroid possessed. I still prefer this over The Electric Lady though. Key Tracks: Dirty Computer (Intro), Take A Byte, Make Me Feel, Django Jane (Just because it's kind of the center of the album), Don't Judge Me Spoiler 31. Kero Kero Bonito - Time N Place (Twee Pop/Synthpop) I was expecting a more noisier album after their ep but they went comfy pop instead, moving away from their previous electro/bitpop sound. It's consistent enough and her melodies fit the change. Key Tracks: Only Acting, Time Today, Make Believe, Swimming Spoiler 30. Koto - Bye Bye Teens Lullaby (J-Pop/Dance Pop) After listening to the glorious bitpop album Platonic Planet (which for some reason is not on spotify wtf), it gave me extra incentive on listening to her new album. It doesn't reach that height but it's still all around enjoyable happy j-pop. Key Tracks: The Opening track, DEAD or Kawaii, Taikutsu, ばいばいてぃーんずららばい Spoiler 29. Tim Hecker - Konoyo (Ambient) As a fan, Konoyo doesn't make it to top 5 of his releases. However he sounds more inspired here than Love Streams so that is a plus. The cover looks weird at first but with the music it kind of fits? Key Tracks: This Life, In mother earth phase, Across to Anoyo Spoiler 28. AL-90 - Murmansk-60 (Outsider House) He nails the underground house rave setting. Key Tracks: Makabr, Black Sapphire, Prokhor Song Spoiler 27. Gnod - Chapel Perilous (Noise Rock/Industrial Rock) An overlooked album after Daughters stole all the attention. They were brave in starting out with a 15 minute opener but it paid off. Beyond that the album's aggression still holds up at the end. Between the opener and closing song are electronic/drone phases that spark up beyond what's expected from an typical noise rock album. Key Track: Donovan's Daughter, Uncle Frank Says Turn Spoiler 26. Haru Nemuri - Haru To Shura (J-Pop/Noise Pop) There's a fun mix of j-rock, jpop & j-rap sensibilities that made me stay throughout the journey. Tbh I could do less of the rapping but it's not much of a detractor. This offers good production to make up for some of the incomprehensible moments. The amount of songs this offers may look "intimidating" but the lengths are relatively sized for it to not drag on (if we also ignore the remixes at the end) Key Tracks: narashite, lostplanet, rock 'n' roll wa shinanai Spoiler
