Agreed about Astroworld being too long, some songs are such blatant skips compared to the 10/10 bangers.

Teyana was done dirty by all that Kanye drama, she could really benefit with a real industry push like H.E.R. got this year.

JPEG's cold sense of humor is a breath of fresh air in rap. Some of his song titles alone :deadbanana2:

Liberation was fine I guess, Accelerate remains the highlight.

Eden only got one listen from me. :rip: Quiz and AUTISM are bops tho!

Of course its the hightlight, though that's not an insult as its one of her best lead singles.

ASTRO :clap3: Travis made several points

And then he made several... not points.  BUT we shall forgive him.

Which 1s?

i just heard tommy cash last week, i like the instrumentals but his rapping style is kinda all over the place. X-Ray snapped tho

Yeah he's not that good of a rapper (sorry danny for comparing him to u) but I like the album either way.  Gives me Die Antwoord vibes..

Travis Scott deserves the world for blocking that plastic hoe, Onika. LOVE HIS ALBUM ALREADY FOR THAT.

X-Tina's album was wack, not my tea.

LMAO, just wait unti you find out where Queen ends up on my list :jonny:

Primal Heart was  a decent attempt, shame Kimbra is founding no success tho. It's like she in nothing to GP after GOTYE song. a true shame.

Human was quite a decent track too.

I like Primal Heart but I have to say its her weakest album, the other two deserved infinite success tho.

Liberation was such a nice surprise this year, completely agreed :clap3:Her albums are mostly bloated with filler songs but this time around she managed to release a cohesive & mature album. Eden was definitely a step down from Ephorize which I feel like was her strongest. Still I thought Garfield and Quiz were ****ing bops :jonny5: And wow wig at Kimbra :jonny4: It’s sad that you don’t like it that much now but I feel like it still one of the best pop records of this decade.

Quiz is .... maybe her best song, but Ephorize had more songs that are 8/10 or more, so it definitely wins.

didn't come back to xtine album like at all but i'm glad it's not 201319390 tracks for once

kimbra and pusha albums were gr8 but what you said about their downsides is valid. also v true about astroworld possibly being amazing if trimmed down and not so much about black orange, it would be boring no matter how much shlt got cut out imo

Lmao, its her second best album next to Biconic.

8 hours ago, Eeveelution said:

I agree about Recovery, but the other two are quality ballads and not safe at all!

I agree they're not safe but ... not good.

also whew, Utada in HMs :clap3:

He's Charli XCX adjacent, so yes?

Liberation starting off the list :clap3: Maria is a great track

Empress Of seems interesting, I'll have to check.

This last album is pretty harmless so at the very least you won't hate it.

5 hours ago, Kang. said:

I didn't kno Tommy Cash made an album !!

Daytona and Astro both made several points (Daytona more than Astro)

Astro made more points but also had 10 more songs so I mean if it didn't make more points that would be sad.

Astroworld def needed to cut down some. I like Anna Von's album but I really didn't give it much listens. Seems to be like in the mood kind of thing.

Yeah I mean maybe I'm just basic and am never in the mood for that stuff....

ok so much good stuff here:

i LOVE dead magic, veteran, and wide awake

and i really like astroworld, tommy cash's album, and daytona

and a lot of the rest i think is p good overall (i agree kimbra was a little disappointing in the end)

I feel a handful of these albums deserved better but you still made points

Pusha, Travis, and Rae :clap3:

I don't think the length is why I dislike NS but rather the music that surrounds the concept of the album. It just doesn't hit all the right marks for me despite the themes it tries to portray :michael:

Which albums deserved better?  NS definitely drew more from like Blues and more raw/acoustic genres, I think it threw everyone for a loop because thats the opposite of his signature sound.

Oh wow.  I wish I would have listened to J Balvin earlier because this album bangs.  I like every single track, so it was sad to place it so low but it felt wrong only listening to an album twice and putting it any higher.  Its also nice seeing such a mainstream star going down so many unique musical directions.

Standouts: Mi Gente, Machika, En Mi

Weaknesses: ? none really

Ppkutrx.jpg

Definitely one of the rising stars in "deconstructed club."  Lot is is the ****.  I seriously suggest they use incorporate vocals/spoken word in their tracks because when they do it slaps.  Or maybe they should produce for other people?  Listen to this if you like SOPHIE and haven't already.

Standouts: Hunted, Heart

Weaknesses: Resilience

7r58Gll.jpg

This album is super fun, no fills post punk.  They have two vocalists and sometimes they both sing different melodies at the same time.  It's an easy schtick but it works well.  It's a very solid album, with little highlights, but almost no low points.

Standouts: The Hype

Weaknesses: n/a

t4kdrit.jpg

Mr Twin Sister's 2014 album is one of the most underrated albums of all time in my opinion.  It's stylish, dark, gay, ironic, weird, everything I like in music!  But this album definitely is not as good lol.  It's going for a more funky R&B direction and they still got it but well there's less 'WOW THEY DID THAT' moments.  They should go back to faux deep house, thanks.  I guess this writeup is kinda negative lol and I'm not gonna convince anyone to listen to it but you should.  It's got nice songs on it.

Standouts: Tops and Bottoms, Alien FM

Weaknesses: Set Me Free

pM5R9fL.jpg

Kevin is a mess, and it seems like he has decided to release everything he has ever recorded nowadays.  This is definitely their best since about 2012 though.  It goes for the New Wave meets extended 80s Italio Disco vibe.  On some of the songs Kevin is trying to sound sassy but ends up sounding like The Millionares though, and honestly?  those are the best moments on the album.

Standouts: Paranoic Intervals / Body Dysmorphia, Sophie Calle Private Game / Every Person Is a *****, Every ***** Is a Star!

Weaknesses: Plateau Phase / No Careerism No Corruption

Cq362Oc.jpg

Oh Poppy.  Yeah she's like the corniest person ever and has that weird story about her collaborator being abusive :biblio:  Anyway half of this album is bad stale natalia kills style synthpop and the other half slaps way more than it has any right to.  She even goes for a Babymetal kinda vibe on some of the ending tracks.  If yall didn't know, my fave thing Pop artists do is combine a bunch of unrelated genres in a slapdash style.  You take the bad with the good, I guess.  Don't hate me for liking this.

Standouts: Fashion After All, X, Time is Up

Weaknesses: Am I A Girl, Iconic, Chic Chick

nIljRFB.jpg

OK, THIS IS THE LAST TIME I WILL DO THIS IN MY ALBUMS RANKING.  But here it goes, I am going to complain about unnecessarily long albums.  SERIOUSLY JULIA?  You think we want to listen to this all in one sitting?  It's damn near impossible.  She should have cut 6-8 of the tracks.  GOD.  It could have been a top 10 album too, but the length kept me from listening to it in full more than once.  Still tho it has lots of great tracks.

Standouts: I Shall Love 2, I Shall Love 1, Les Jeux to You

Weaknesses: idk the boring ones I don't remember.

OH, this was such a pleasant surprise.  And to be honest, the first 1-2 tracks are the weakest cuts.  So please give this a try and listen to it all the way through.  It's indie rock/pop with a lot of energy and passion.  It feels like the entire history of indie pop from 1980-2010 has been put into this album and then she threw on power pop choruses for good measure.  There's something for everybody here.

Standouts: Deadbody, Freak Out, Stock Image

Weaknesses:Thingamajig, Premonitions

4tqJeKs.jpg

So the great debate continues.  Is this an EP or an album? Eh.... well, I don't ****ing know but I put it here so we'll have to deal with that.  Every song is good, and it's definitely way less ambitious than BFT but that's not necessarily a bad thing.  Sometimes after something heavy and ambitious artists need to take a rest and have FUN!!!  WE NEED FULL VERSIONS OF THE SKITS THOUGH, LIKE YESTERDAY.  Kenny Beats really is producer of the year tho.  Love his fuzzy yet welcoming style.

Standouts: FUN, Tweakin, Run the Bands

Weaknesses: Relay

4eEMoFg.jpg

Well, they released one of their best albums this year, but it's still a BH album and it wouldn't be a Beach House album without being boring for a good 1/3 of it.

Standouts: Black Car, Dive, Lemon Glow

Weaknesses: Pretty much everything else is just fine.

wHKvvU6.jpg

Considering I was just complaining about the extra long album trend, I am super super glad that we also have a super short album trend going on.  Just give us your best material and then get out.  Don't waste my time.  That's exactly what Kanye did with Cudi in this release.  It's classic Kanye production, and what HE SHOULD BE GIVING US ALL THE TIME instead of being annoying on social media.

Standouts: Kids See Ghosts, Ghost Town pt 2

Weaknesses:Reborn

DOzCN1T.jpg

Well, i guess the guy who made this is a big deal or something. I just think it has some bops on it and I like the sorta organic disco meets deep house style.

Standouts: Know You, This Old House is All I have

Weaknesses: Rave on U

Posted

I really tried to get into that Poppy girl, but I guess, it's just not for me :michael:

You made points re: Julia but you lied.about Beach house.

Reborn and Rave on U are also the best songs on their respective albums x

Just to let you guys know.  I am a HUGE fan of Rico Nasty.  I will be following for her the years to come, and I think she has made bounds and leaps since last year, even.  Her newfound angry style of rapping really is probably the best thing she's ever decided to do musically.  Block List made my list last year but it wasn't that high.  It's a banger, but she took to a whole new level this year.  Nasty gives us some of her best material ever and pushes hip-hop forward.  Unfortunately there are some unfortunate choices as well that I strongly dislike.  It made it this high on the quality of the standouts alone because wow they are something else.  Listening to her music feels like I'm letting go all the pent up rage I have left in me and its honestly therapeutic.

Standouts: Rage, Pressing Me, Coutnin Up, Ice Cream, In the Air

Weaknesses: Lala, Oreo, Won't Change

xsqB43y.jpg

I think this album is one of the most genius examples of using your weakness as a strength.  Playboi Carti is not a dextrous rapper, and instead decides to basically go full ad-lib.  Then he just repeats them for ad nauseum.  It shouldn't work but the album sorta becomes hypnotic and puts you in a trance.  It's sort of like those artsy instrumental electronic albums put through a Hip-Hop/Trap filter.  No, seriously it is.

Standouts: Poke It Out, Lean 4 Real

Weaknesses: Pull Up

177RoZP.jpg

Props to KKB for going in a musical direction absolutely nobody was expecting this year.  The strongest cut from TOTEP survived the cut and made it on this album as well, but the rest of the album is brand new.  You still get a lot of the city-pop whimsy that made their debut so special however now the lyrics are more introspective and the instrumentals are heavily Twee/Pop Punk influenced.  It shouldn't work as well as it does but the best albums always feel wrong but right.

Standouts: Only Acting, Make Believe, Dear Future Self

Weaknesses: Sometimes

5feQy88.png

In Japanese music it seems like that sorta fast spoken word rap style has blown up in Pop and alternative music.  This time, Harunemuri takes it to indie rock and absolutely KILLS it.  I feel like her ability to pace songs so that there's an effective build-up and release is what makes this album so strong.

Standouts: Narishite, Make More Noise of You

Weaknesses: Nineteen

NqUkhwR.png

MAI LAN IS EXTREMELY UNDERRATED.  After M.I.A. committed music-career suicide, she is carrying on that torch.  Really we got the best songs from her previous singles/EP and then some new bangers.  So there's a lot of good stuff going on here without a lot of filler.  Some of the slower songs do take time to grow on you though, but once you realize their whimsy and magic you will become addicted to this album.

Standouts: Dial My Number, Technique, Nail Polish, Missle

Weaknesses: Peru, Haze

julia has a gorgeous 8-track album there somewhere but i'm never listening to the full thing to decide which 8 tracks she should choose again

KSG and beach house low but i'll take it. poppy kinda makes me ctfu with how she's all sorts of boring and useless most of the time and then comes through with like play destroy/x but i mean those are great songs so i'm all here for that

Beach House :heart2:

I don't mind the 22-23 minute rap 'album' trend either since it's preferable over 26 album track migos/drake stuff.

I still can't take poppy seriously at all.

Not to be like this but AAL is basically beginner's house and it doesn't keep me interested for long.

Oh wow. Big update. okay.

I stan The Official Body although The Hype is one of my least faves, strong disagree on your Aviary writeup but you're entitled to your wrong opinion, FM! standouts and weaknesses are reversed must've been a mistake, no points @ 7, Rico Nasty, KSG, KKB & Harunemuri are all excellence, Lotic, Premonitions & A.A.L. were all great too.
