I forgot to listen to that Pinkshinyultrablast album and it's been sitting on my iTunes basically ever since it came out :rip:

so sad so ****ty is bad but for the most part what I listened to from the HM's was okay. I didn't know tuneyards was still a thing though.

lol, she's kinda exploring this new political landscape and listening to the album is kinda awkward.... but she really did try and there are great moments.

5 hours ago, theblackestday said:

most of these are great hms (there's about 2-3 albums here which deserved better imo). :heart2: that tune-yards album was decent but I and everyone else pretty much left it in january. the best thing about wild nothing's album is having a mitski penned song. tommy genesis' album was okay pretty boring, she doesn't have much personality.

Wait which song was written by Mitski?

Yeah none that I've heard deserved to make the main list.

True!  Same!

The album's middle songs are gr8 (psub) but the rest is yawn kinda.

ACTUALLY THIS IS #62-58

LET'S ALL GIVE XTINA PROPS, she gave us a mature album that wasn't overwrought and filled with pointless ballads and interludes.  CLAP FOR HER PLEASE.  This album however does have a few weak songs which is why it's the first album to go yet there are a handful of amazing cuts that are classics for her.

Standouts: Accelerate, Maria, Sick of Sittin, Pipe

Weaknesses: Fall in Line, Deserve

Rae Morris still hasn't found herself.  She's just in this awkward non mainstream pop bubble yet doesn't know where else to go.  Luckily she's talented at writing catchy pop songs.  I'm just waiting for her to take it to that next level where I can start stanning.

Standouts: Dip My Toe, Dancing With Character

Weaknesses: Reborn

Love music like this.  Shoulda spent more time with her, but I forgot about it after a month... ah, oh well.

Standouts: Qualm

Weaknesses: It Was All Fields Around Here When I Was a Kid

QeypD2p.jpg

This album starts with a hot track and ends with one.  The middle is simply good but I don't remember any of it when I'm not listening.  Pusha is great with lyrics and punchlines and his rapping style is non-animated so he's great at the matter of fact kinda style.

Standouts: If You Know You Know, Infrared

Weaknesses: ?

KWB8xtV.jpg

Cupcakke's first album that was a step down.  I feel like she needs to hit harder if she wants to do tough hip hop.  Still, this album's filler is all located in the middle as well so it starts off and ends really strong.

Standouts: Quiz, Cereal & Water, AUTISM

Weaknesses: Blackjack, Starbucks

Liberation was fine I guess, Accelerate remains the highlight.

Eden only got one listen from me. :rip: Quiz and AUTISM are bops tho!

ACTUALLY, ITS #57-52

This album probably has the most expensive and luxurious sounding hip-hop production on a trap album that I've ever heard.  It's so lush and nice and fluffy.  Well, it's biggest weakness is you know, the streaming era super pointless long album thing.  There's a stunning 11 track album hiding here, somewhere.  Travis is a good rapper.  This is the second album I've heard of his and its way better than the previous one.  I'm gonna check out Rodeo sometimes cuz I hear that is the best one. I don't really think he has a unique rapping style but he holds his own.

Standouts: Stargazing, Sicko Mode

Weaknesses: Yosemite

This is sorta like PC Music meets Danny Brown.  It's kinda amazing.  It's one of those albums that you don't expect anything from, so are very thankful when it delivers the goods.

Standouts: X-Ray, Cool 3D World

Weaknesses: Dostoyevsky

Chelsea Jade is such a wonderful songwriter.  I think that's definitely why this album made the list and didn't get relegated to HMs is because of that.  The songs's melodies are unique yet totally infectious.  It has that 2010s synthpop indie sound that we all are way too familiar with by now.  Is it bad?  No It's kind of my weakness but you know, she should get new ones and take it to the next level!

Standouts: Pitch Dark, Ride or Cry

Weaknesses: Laugh it Off

aDBubMj.jpg

This is her sellout album, lol.  I'm not exactly sure why she decided to go more mainstream because nobody will buy but she did.  Still, better than anybody expected and more enjoyable than it has the right to be.

Standouts: I Don't Even Smoke Weed, Just the Same

Weaknesses: When I'm With Him

Honestly, 3 or 5 years ago this woulda been my #1 album or something.  I LOVE IT, but I didn't listen to it more than twice.  I'm kinda annoyed that my taste has changed but maybe I'm just overwhelmed by the amount of music.  This is what will play when I'm finally being dragged to the pits of hell, it's that believable.

Standouts: The Mysterious Vanishing of Electra

Weaknesses: Ugly and Vengeful

ANOTHER ALBUM THAT COULD HAVE BEEN BETTER HURT BY ITS UNNECESSARY LENGTH!! That seems to be the trend nowadays so I might have to try to get used to it (I won't).  Well i enjoyed this more low-key style compared to Freetown Sound to be honest and the standouts are truly something.  I think this is actually his most eclectic albums, and he pulled from styles that are not frequently pulled from.  So with the flaws this album has, we should all respect him for probably creating new trends that will appear in the next 2-3 years.

Standouts: Charcoal Baby, Bubblegum

Weaknesses: The pointless interludes.

OK, I loved this album when it first came out and thought it would be top 10.  I was wrong.  I just think she gave us all the edgy creative songs as singles but then gave us super safe songs for the rest of the album.  The ballads really do not work, either.  As much as I respect her for trying.

Standouts: Top of the World, Human, Lightyears

Weaknesses: Version of Me, Recovery, Past Love

afIbhcS.jpg

This is less of a masterpiece album and more of an introduction to who JPEG is.  I think we are going to be hearing a lot about him in the next 5 years.  His edgy humor and crazy instrumentals are held steady by his more conventional rapping style (most of the time) and it just makes sense to me when he does it right.

Standouts: Real Nega, Baby I'm Bleeding

Weaknesses: Curb Stomp, Maculay Culkin

Love this fun energetic new wave album.  We need more quality new wave these days...  I don't have much to say about this album other than its low stakes but makes up for it by being pretty consistent.

Standouts: Wide Awake, Almost Had to Start a Fight

Weaknesses: Violence

HxhDEyT.jpg

This album was surrounded by a bunch of random Kanye drama as usual.  You know what?  I have no idea what its about I just enjoy the lush R&B that it gave us and that one Hip-House song at the end.

Standouts: WTP, Rose in Harlem

Weaknesses: 3way

Primal Heart was  a decent attempt, shame Kimbra is founding no success tho. It's like she in nothing to GP after GOTYE song. a true shame.

Human was quite a decent track too.

Liberation was such a nice surprise this year, completely agreed :clap3:Her albums are mostly bloated with filler songs but this time around she managed to release a cohesive & mature album. Eden was definitely a step down from Ephorize which I feel like was her strongest. Still I thought Garfield and Quiz were ****ing bops :jonny5: And wow wig at Kimbra :jonny4: It’s sad that you don’t like it that much now but I feel like it still one of the best pop records of this decade.

Posted

didn't come back to xtine album like at all but i'm glad it's not 201319390 tracks for once

kimbra and pusha albums were gr8 but what you said about their downsides is valid. also v true about astroworld possibly being amazing if trimmed down and not so much about black orange, it would be boring no matter how much shlt got cut out imo

Posted

I agree about Recovery, but the other two are quality ballads and not safe at all!

Jpegmafia snapped

Kimbra and Dev made points

KTSE was cute but forgettable to me

I hate Wide Awake with a passion

KTSE is so so good :jonny4: probably one of my favorite r&b records from recent years

Primal Heart has some jams :clap3:

So that Tommy Cash album is like PC Music? I guess I should give it a try then

also whew, Utada in HMs :clap3:

Posted

Liberation starting off the list :clap3: Maria is a great track

Empress Of seems interesting, I'll have to check.

Posted

I didn't kno Tommy Cash made an album !!

Daytona and Astro both made several points (Daytona more than Astro)

Posted

I will gladly take any Chelsea Jade love, but Laugh It Off? Weak? I have to.... laugh (it off)

Posted

48 through 46 is a stomp. I can't wait to see what JPEG does next ur right

Posted

Good spot for veteran and wide awake.

Astroworld def needed to cut down some. I like Anna Von's album but I really didn't give it much listens. Seems to be like in the mood kind of thing.

omg personal best :jonny5: she did that. i'm a bit disappointed with someone out there :'( idk
