ATRL Moderator Legend E Posted January 3, 2019 ATRL Moderator Posted January 3, 2019 Overtime is so good I find Giving Me Life slightly overrated, but it's a good song. Accelerate is AMAZING, I'm so happy someone else stans!
Maddox Posted January 3, 2019 Posted January 3, 2019 So many good tunes in here: Eros, Nobody, Lemon Glow, Giving Me Life, Funky Sensation, Accelerate, Bikini, I Got The Juice Not entirely sold on Slayyyter but anyway she got some potential. Also thanks for the Koto album recommendation, what kind of perfection is this
Remmy Posted January 3, 2019 Posted January 3, 2019 I wish I could say I'm a fan of Accelerate There's some interesting parts to it, but overall the song doesn't come together for me. I Got the Juice is a solid bop, Pharrell actually did something! "I always like anytime rappers mention pee its funny to me" sjfsifds
Kiss It Better Posted January 4, 2019 Posted January 4, 2019 Charcoal Baby, Nobody, Giving Me Life, Get Up 10, In My Dreams wooo
potent Posted January 4, 2019 Posted January 4, 2019 Giving Me Life and Accelerate are not what I would choose from those albums, but they're still solid picks!
Jet Posted January 4, 2019 Posted January 4, 2019 Giving Me Life is such a bop, reminds me of her Butterfly era stuff
volition Posted January 4, 2019 Posted January 4, 2019 Accelerate is kinda good honestly. I hate the rest of her album unfortunately tho.
Sbbmsve Posted January 4, 2019 Posted January 4, 2019 I'm late a bit... I Got The Juice is a great pick from Dirty Computer, lot of people undeservedly panned it even though it is a genius song. In My Dreams Accelerate...
Lazuli Posted January 4, 2019 Posted January 4, 2019 Overtime I honestly enjoyed the AC-friendly sound of Glasshouse but yas I'm here for her giving us some gay bops Get Up 10 reminds me of Iggy's Walk the Line aka album openers that sound serious and talk about their success story Accelerate could really be so much better but I appreciate the ambition! In My Dreams
ATRL Moderator kelly-clarkson Posted January 4, 2019 ATRL Moderator Posted January 4, 2019 Giving Me Life is that song

I thought the song would be super cheesy based off the title but it works. 19 hours ago, lhdang2000 said: Accelerate was a mess. It grew on me a bit, but I still can't believe Xtina releases that as the comeback single. I Got The Juice + Siren. It's definitely a grower, listen to it more. 19 hours ago, Eeveelution said: Like most of these songs. In My Dreams would be my fave. ATRL Moderator madonnas Posted January 4, 2019 Author ATRL Moderator Posted January 4, 2019 30. Jenny Hval - Spells This song definitely takes me to like a coffee sho in 2018. It's super artsy 90s girl. It still has classic Jenny-isms and I love the Jazz elements. The song is structured but, well, sparsely. 29. Nicki Minaj - Chun-Li Nicki MInaj finally delivers a single where she delivers bars as a hook. The song is sort of really just about how better she is than everyone but she uses 90s video games and pop culture puns to create a nostalgic theme. The best part of the song is the off key sax on it, so good. 28. U.S. Girls - Incidental Boogie Chaotic art rock disco about domestic violence is something I didn't expect this year but I'm so here for it. 27. Hatchie - Sleep This song is dreamy synth pop bliss reminiscent of Heaven or Las Vegas. Honestly, the main synth line reminds me of the bridge of Just Can't Get Enough by Depeche Mode. Does anybody else hear it? Anyway, it was touch to choose between this, Try, and Sugar & Spice. I went with Sleep because of the instrumental being the most appealing and original to me. 26. Koto - Dancing Like a Snail Speaking of amazing synth lines, this song has a CRAZY instrumental hook that's very fast paced, long, and yet sticks in your head and stays in there. This is my pick from the album as it definitely one of the best intro-points for KOTO. It has the catchiness and the zaniness. 25. Ariana Grande - Sweetener The verses are sorta Disney cheesy like, but its all a trap to lure you into that completely eurphoric and magical chorus. Who woulda thought "get t get it hit it hit it flip it etc" would work so well? Its a typical delivery of songs in R&B and Hip-Hop but Pharrell compliment's Ariana's awkwardness to make it a strength with beeps and boops and synths. 24. Rosalia - Malamente Flamenco-Pop meets Hip-Hop meets Art Pop is another genre combo I did not expect in 2018, but it was a welcome addition to the musical landscape. From the first time I heard this song I knew it was going to be a future classic and that she was going somewhere. 23. Zombie Chang - Iziwaru Bakari Shinaide WE NEED RAPPERS LIKE HER. This song sounds tailor made for me and my tastes. I love the repeated synth. 22. Robyn - Ever Again The closing track on Honey is a light funk song that basically calls Robyn's entire schtick to an end. Is it just for the album or is this a moment for her whole career to change? IDK. The song is very meta and she talks about how she's always arguing with her men and feeling down but now, she's moving on past that and the romance is going to work because she said so. It's a level of self awareness that I appreciate in pop music and an even newer level for Robyn who already had a lot of it. 21. Cupcakke - Duck Duck Goose Cupcakke constantly ups the ante on her sexual gay club sounding songs. We get so many memorable lines that CPR got sort of blown out of the water. My faves are "turn it into a Yeezy shirt when you rip off my top" and "nut in my ***** hair that's deep conditioner." 20. Roisin Murphy - Plaything / Like These are the most conventional sounding songs Roisin released this year, and they're definitely the most Nu-Disco styled songs. Plaything is about being led on by a guy, but liking it. There's definitely a sort of masochistic vibe going on and I live for it. It's my pick of the two but Like is a great track that has a very interesting instrumental. The outro/bridge is the best part of it. 19. Yves Tumor - Noid Noid stands for "paranoid." I like how sunny this song sounds even though it's about something super serious and nasty. It feels like a Third Eye Blind song stuck through a psychedelic blender. 18. Charli XCX - Focus / No Angel I love that I just decided to choose both A sides because I can! I would choose Focus if I had to though, it's extremely hypnotic and definitely the more sophisticated of the song. No Angel has that sorta Boom Clap big chorus going on though and its still extremely very good. Charli did that, as she almost always does. I saw her perform Focus live though, so that's also something that went into me preferring it. 17. Shygirl - O 2018 was the year of the female rapper, and one of the rising stars is Shygirl. Her EP was so fun and O, the standout, is such a banger. It's that UK Garage type song but it sounds like a bunch of random machinery slapped together for my listening pleasure. 16. Lana Del Rey - Venice Bitch You know a 10 minute song is good when it doesn't feel like 10 minutes. This song's instrumental break feels like 30-45 seconds even though it's a few minutes long. It contains some classic Lana-isms that feel poignant even though they don't mean much, that's her thing and she does it well.
ATRL Moderator madonnas Posted January 4, 2019 Author ATRL Moderator Posted January 4, 2019 (edited) These updates are EXHAUSTING to write/format. I'm just gonna finish today. Edited January 4, 2019 by madonnas

I'm just gonna finish today. bisch wtf, tryna finish faster than moi, so rude. anyways cute update. Sweetener is such a bop, get it, get it, beach. i love it. Chun Li ew, wtf sis. i trusted yo asss. so nasty of you, i feel betrayed. trrashnicka rly? Focus is an amazing song, miss XBOX maybe snapped?
ATRL Moderator madonnas Posted January 4, 2019 Author ATRL Moderator Posted January 4, 2019 15. Marie Davidson - Work It Marie Davidson's magnum opus is a IDM/Minimal House that's sort of a Vogue track. It's got so much sarcasm that it comes back around and can work seriously as well. The line between actually working and dancing in the club becomes non-existent here. 14. Red Velvet - Power Up If Oh My Girl introduced bitpop to Kpop this year, then Red Velvet perfected it with this banger. It has a two part chorus too. The "actual" one is better, but the "ba banana" part is great with an unconventional chord change thrown in to give us that essential Red Velvet eerieness. 13. Ciara - Level Up CIARA DOES IT AGAIN. If this is any sign of her new album it will be just as good as her self titled. What I love about this song is how bare-bones it is. Even lyrically we don't get much but all it does is hype up the extreme energy that Ciara has. It's great to know she really does have a signature R&B sound that can work well whatever era we are in. And it's great to know she has integrity and does not mercilessly follow trends. 12. Kacey Musgraves - Oh, What a World This beautiful song about romance is by far the best song from Kacey's album. The vocoder could be a gimmick, but instead it adds a psychedelic and otherworldly touch to the song. It could be about a really really great acid trip, or just a natural high from love. 11. Christine and the Queens - Follarse / Damn What must a Woman Do The most passionate and funky moment of Christine's album is this cut. I don't even know how to describe it but it's very very passionate track and the instrumental please me. 10. HMLTD - Proxy Love This song goes from bratty electropunk to power pop in a MINUTE and has hilariously stupid lyrics. SUPPORT GAY MUSICIANS GUYS. I feel like this is another song that is specifically created to my taste level. 9. Mai Lan - Dial My Number Mai Lan gives us M.I.A. club banger realness and the literal-ness of the chorus telling her crush to dial her number is so funny that I don't even care that people don't really dial numbers manually anymore. Plus we got choo choo train noises near the end!! LISTEN TO IT I KNOW YOU GUYS HAVEN'T ALREADY. 8. Yubin - Lady Na na na na na, na na na LADY!! That is the chorus of the year, and this is kpop song of the year. This song is a tribute to Japanese city-pop and the level of detail in this song is utterly stunning. The reason why its so successful is you can tell its a project made out of complete love for an era/sound. 7. Charli XCX - Delicious The standout to Pop 2 is this banger about loneliness and clinging onto someone just for the sake of it. I love the beat switch halfway through from sorta gritty to more eurodance and Tommy Cash stuns in his guest verse. This is sort of the other perspective of 3AM (Charli's weakest song). 6. Roisin Murphy - All My Dreams / Innocence ROISIN MURPHY won 2018. She gave us 4 amazing double a sides and this is the best one. All My Dreams is haunting, creepy, sexy, and sounds sort of like a gay club wiccan ritual. Innocence bangs too. 5. Mitski - Geyser Mitski's Geyser has such an explosive end that it made it the best song of her career so far. The way the song builds up is fantastic. AND ITS WAY BETTER THAN NOBODY. 4. Kero Kero Bonito - Only Acting KKB's new sound is exemplified best in the lead single to their new era. It's a twee-ish pop song that has an explosive chorus and descends into noise and chaos. 3. SOPHIE - Whole New World / Pretend World This is the culmination of SOPHIE's career so far. Everything she does well put into one song. 2. Cupcakke - Quiz An "upgraded" Cartoons, if you will. This song poses questions to all loser men and bitches who try it with Cupcakke. It has some of her most energetic and vicious lyricism, along with a completely surprising YELLED chorus. I LOVE yelled rap choruses. 1. Rico Nasty - Rage This song is sonically the best thing I've heard all year and Rico's rapping style complements the genius instrumental. The hook is centered around just random off beat screams and it sends me to the astral plane.
Remmy Posted January 4, 2019 Posted January 4, 2019 sweetener... euphoric and magical chorus??? Duck Duck Goose is cute, Chun-Li is also cute but her weakest lead. Ever Again I was actually listening to that when I entered this thread. No Angel (Charli's best 2018 release) > Focus (her 4th), both are solid bops though. "These updates are EXHAUSTING to write/format. I'm just gonna finish today." Relatable, except I can't finish that soon unless I want 75% of my lists to get ignored edit: Delicious is... not it, and I was only stunned at how bad Tommy Cash's verse was. Quiz being this high is interesting. Oh, What a World The best from Golden Hour for sure, whew she put extra love and care into that one.
RobDeWittBukater Posted January 4, 2019 Posted January 4, 2019 I'm real late on this one but wow I absolutely love most of the K-Pop picks and yes at Ciara snatching that top 15 position Level Up really is THAT bop.
Dom Posted January 4, 2019 Posted January 4, 2019 level up is tad too high, isn't it? sis.... hmmmmm delicious is a very cute song, miss charlotte knew what she was doing naming it delicious tbh. oksey geyser is hella cute, i love it. rico nasty is so scaryyyy thoo, sis. the mv is so creepy, i'm watchin it now, and i'm scaredd, u really just casually listen to is, what u smoking, beach? omg, "i'm a ****in doggy" you mean literally you like doggy in doggy style? hmmm. sis. call 911, madonannas has lost the plot.
Eeveelution Posted January 4, 2019 Posted January 4, 2019 I have to say I prefer 15-30, though I guess i'm biased considering so many were on my own list (including my soty ). The top 15 is good tho! Especially, Geyser, Quiz and Only Acting. I just listened to Rage and it's good! I'll have to listen to her album soon cause i've been meaning to for a while. I also streamed Koto her debut earlier and I definitely prefer it to her album this year. Lots of big bops as the kids say. Anyway, great countdown as always. See u next year x
theblackestday Posted January 5, 2019 Posted January 5, 2019 16-30: An update most of these are fantastic, and proud of you for picking the right Sweetener track. Spells, Venice Bitch, Sleep and Incidentical Boogie are also apt choices from the respective artists. 15-01: Delicious is top 3 in Charli's discography, I'm glad we're giving it the recognition it deserves. And your top 5 is perfect; I absolutely love the fact a Rico Nasty song is your SOTY, it's truly what she deserves and Rage is in different areas, professional ****, etc. Loved this countdown
Beyonnaise Posted January 5, 2019 Posted January 5, 2019 Level Up, Venice Bitch, Oh What A World Delicious was my least favorite when Pop 2 was released but then it clicked and now it's my second favorite. Her vocal intonations are otherwordly and the bridge is ecstasy. Her most artistic piece since the True Romance era.
