60.  Let's Eat Grandma - Donnie Darko

Let%E2%80%99s%20Eat%20Grandma:%20I'm%20All%20Ears.jpg

This 12 minute art rock art pop opus is the best thing these girls have ever done.  It's gorgeous.  The one constant is a really simple synth line and it werks.

59.  Slayyyter - I'm High

88fb8e98ae1a024d64404d37642cd88f.1000x1000x1.jpg

This song has the same europhoric energy that Paradise by Charli XCX has, and also the same energy that Femme Fatale has.

58.  Grimes - We Appreciate Power

grimes-we-appreciate-power-1543436781-640x640.jpg

Just like Carly, disappointing Grimes is still amazing.  I think this song is better in theory than execution however we do get an industrial robotic bubblegum pop banger so.

57.  Lotic - Hunted

a3576897727_10.jpg

I love how super eerie this song sounds, and the paranoia/eerieness is basically used to describe how Lotic feels about the white male gaze.

56.  Blood Orange - Charcoal Baby

600x600bf.png

The last minute of this song takes me there.  It's a more blues-y acoustic side from BO but I still think this was definitely the right lead single material and its pretty accessible.

55.  Beach House - Lemon Glow

beach%20house%20lemon%20glow%20cover.jpg

Their lead singles usually offer a twist on their formula, and this song ends up taking the Dream Pop sound on a more 60s psychedelic road.  I enjoy it.

54.  Confidence Man - C.O.O.L. Party

105523-confident-music-for-confident-people.jpg

Pretentious LA chic girl meets Deee-Lite in this great banger, you get a girl flippantly talking about how cool the party she's going to it.  Of course, she sounds completely bored the entire time.

53.  Peggy Gou - Han Jan

zen12483-peggy-gou-cover.jpg

Peggy Gou's stylish House music is complemented best when she's speaking very fast on it.  The rhythm of her voice just enhances the song's instrumental, it doesn't matter what she's saying (its too quiet and I don't speak korean anyways).

52.  Little Boots - Eros

fdad98185eabc5b051ecf3f14a02e92a.600x600x1.png

I don't even hear PTR in this.  This is a super sexy dark disco house bop by Little Boots and sounds like something Goldfrapp could have created if they went down this direction.  It's surprising for someone as bright as LB but maybe this new direction will give us her best album.

51.  Mitski - Nobody

3e06c4ead263b1ec8e0a7fb0b420e132.1000x1000x1.jpg

Mitski gives us a classic non electro, early disco sounding song.  The hook is simply one word:  Nobody.  The song is great lyrically however the one song on the verse trick is something she's never really used before that I remember and it just works.  The more she says "nobody" the more you believe it and the more you feel it.

50.  Natalie Prass - Ship Go Down

Natalie%20Prass:%20The%20Future%20and%20the%20Past.jpg

Natalie's best song is a slower Jazz inspired song that slowly descends into chaos.  The chaos is still catchy though.  I think it's about America under Trump's presidency.

49.  Sink Ya Teeth - Freak 4 the Kick

sinkyateeth.jpg

The intro tho Sink Ya Teeth's album is an extremely enjoyable Dance-Punk cut.

48.  Teyana Taylor - WTP

26-teyana-taylor-ktse.w700.h700.jpg

WE NEED KANYE TO PRODUCE A HIP-HOUSE ALBUM, ONE SHORT SONG WAS NOT ENOUGH.  This song is super infectious and the "work this *****" repeated is honestly kind of awkward sounding.  It's that kind of awkward sounding pseudo vogue beat that gives the song a gritty edge that allows Teyana's voice to shine.  It's gritty!

47.  Zola Jesus - Bound

532ff8839b5edbaddbe41ab5af057362.1000x1000x1.jpg

Zola Jesus went full club on the lead single to her side b EP.  She's always kinda teetered on the edge of club but never went there fully.  I generally just enjoy it when artists go Synthwave because it sounds cool.

46.  Daphne & Celeste - Taking Notes

Daphne%20&%20Celeste:%20Daphne%20&%20Celeste%20Save%20The%20World.jpg

THIS IS A HUGE BOP.  LISTEN TO IT NOW IF YOU HAVEN'T.

I don't know any of these, but I've seen a lot of praises for Mitski, so I'll look for her later today.

Yesterday I was checking Mitski's album in full and Nobody was one of the songs I liked.

84. April - Oh! My Mistake

51Y7J9+g1kL._SS500.jpg

THE CHORUS THOUGH.  OMG, I love how fast all the vocals are in this song.  By the time the chorus comes I'm completely hooked, and the "oh MY mistake" totally works, I don't know why they have the exclamation point next to the "oh" in the song title it should be next to "my."  This is by far April's best song and took them from an "eh" to "good" group for me.  The pulsating synths also drive the song as well, this is definitely a song with a lot of momentum and then a great explosion.

Yas April! Many KPop groups had breakthroughs in 2018 quality-wise! Have you listen to their "The Blue Bird" it's good too!

I am expecting Lvoe Bomb in here!

79.  Momoland - BAAM

momoland.jpg

Well, Bboom Bboom was really just a rip-off of Serebro's Mi Mi Mi, and this is just a rip-off of Bboom Bboom.  Somehow though, the Serebro was lost in the song and this one ends up being the superior listen.  The song really just has more unique elements in it and make it feel like it isn't some rip off of another sound, and the chorus' pause before "BAAM" are excellent.

BAAM >> BBOOM BBOOM :jonny5: A TASTE!

66.  Dreamcatcher - You and I

d979239f8d833abba675535a66634f10.1000x1000x1.jpg

Something a little more subdued from Dreamcatcher this time.  I love that the chorus sort of just fades away into darkness.

What outsold this, but both are good!

45.  SUNMI - Siren

Sunmi-WARNING.jpg

Instead of going down the cheap EDM route, Sunmi decided to give us a more artistic Synthpop banger.  The highlight of this song is the explosive chorus and singing along with "GET AWAY OUT OF MY FACE."

44.  Lou Rebecca - Neverending

a2059367592_10.jpg

Lou Rebecca offers us a bedroom synthpop song that makes you feel like dancing around in your room.  I think the song is about life really just going on no matter what.  You can feel the melancholy in her voice and that's one of the things I like is that you get sadness but also a bop from this.

43.  DJ Koze - Illumination

artworks-000308027421-42fp42-t500x500.jpg

ROISIN MURPHY WON 2018.  Her vocals make this song even more hypnotic

42.  Mariah Carey - Giving Me Life

220px-Mariah_Carey_-_Caution.png

The midi sounding synths, the beautiful minute long outro, Slick Rick's verse, there's a LOT of good going on in this track, but what makes it best is Mariah's convincing vocal performance and beautiful songwriting.

41.  Jessie Ware - Overtime

Jessie-Ware-Overtime-artwork-web-optimised-820.jpg

I love a return to form.  This return to form is also grittier and more energetic than anything Jessie has done.  She's usually very smooth and relaxing so I hope we do get to hear a little more edge on her next project cause this is it.

40.  Cardi B - Get Up 10

220px-Cardi_B_-_Invasion_of_Privacy.png

Cardi B's rags to riches story is part of her mythos, and the opening track to Invasion of Privacy is an inspirational anthem explaining her outlook on life and why she got so far.  She never gives up etc etc.  It still has those quintessential funny Cardi B-isms but there's a serious sound to it.

39.  Harunemuri - Narashite

cae7bdf25c44b65fd572dbd2946626b9.1000x1000x1.jpg

This is the catchiest indie rock song of the year.  Haru has been praised for her rapping over indie rock tracks but we also get her singing/screaming very passionately in this song.

38.  Disclosure - Funky Sensation

Disclosure-Funky-Sensation-1535028873-640x640.jpg

Disclosure gave us their best song of the year with a Disco Future Funk banger featuring some lady I've never heard of.  Well, she does a great job on it and give us that old school style diva singing.

37.  Christina Aguilera - Accelerate

220px-Christina_Aguilera_Accelerate_cover_artwork.jpg

AGH THIS SONG IS SO AHEAD OF ITS TIME.  It's classic Kanye production, but definitely like 4-5 different songs stuck into one so that the directions it take seem like sudden turns.  It's an exciting listen that never gets old and you find something new each time.  2 Chainz verse is a highlight.

36.  Otha - One of the Girls

Otha-One-Of-The-Girls-770x770.jpg

I know some comparisons are shallow, but I really feel like Otha is what Yaeji would be if she were Scandinavian.  It's very Euro chic meets depressed lonely girl club music.  Apparently they're a duo, idk who the other one is, but the detached vocalist does a great job on this (and their other track released this year too).

35.  Caroline Rose - Bikini

53155b-20180223-caroline-rose.jpg

Sometimes you need to be beaten over the head with a song's message.  Bikini lets out all of Caroline Rose's frustrations with the music industry so far, parodying the way female artists are forced to sexualize themselves for the male gaze.  It's got a fun New Wave style chorus on it.

34.  JPEGMAFIA - Baby I'm Bleeding

7a47be141b1a32d10b09087bcf0bf651.1000x1000x1.png

If you ever questioned JPEG's artistry or if he was just a gimmick, this is basically the song to shut everyone up.  It has everything that makes him good as an artist.  Unconventional off beat instrumental, great lyrics that convey his frustration with the status quo, etc.  This song is actually sort of catchy too, but that doesn't mean it's gonna be played on the radio.

33.  Aseul - Always With You

a3504165269_10.jpg

I think Dream Pop sounds work best when mixed with synthy music.  If you like people like Charlotte Gainsbourg or Hatchie or Beach house listen to this song and bop.

32.  Janelle Monae - I Got The Juice

1200x630bb.jpg

Pharrell was hungry to prove himself this year, releasing many excellent songs n Ariana's album.  This highlight from Dirty Computer has him rapping with hilarious lyrics (I always like anytime rappers mention pee its funny to me) and Janelle oozes charisma and energy.  The song sounds like its about to fall apart all the time, but never gets there.

31.  Kali Uchis - In My Dreams

cec174b69b401443a97ca5cc500fb29c.1000x1000x1.jpg

Again, another easy way to make a song better is by mixing happy and sad well.  In my Dreams is Kali dreaming of a better life.  Its interestingly personal too!

Posted

yassssssssss at get up 10, we stan cardi's classics, onyka nazi wishes.

i got the juice is cute ? :eli:

mariah giving me life, she truly is. title speaks for itself.

Posted

Accelerate was a mess. It grew on me a bit, but I still can't believe Xtina releases that as the comeback single. :rip:

I Got The Juice + Siren. :clap3:

Posted

Like most of these songs. In My Dreams would be my fave. :-*

Illumination has really been hitting me the past few weeks, I kinda robbed it on my own list.
