potent Posted December 30, 2018 Posted December 30, 2018 Party for One probably would've been placed higher on my list if it had been released a couple weeks sooner, cause I do think its disappointing but it was also a grower. I don't hate Gucci Flip Flops
Pink Matter Posted December 30, 2018 Posted December 30, 2018 Kilo, Sophie, Disclosure, and Amber Mark Bar Sophie (cuz she already dropped an album), I can't wait to see what they all come up with next!

ATRL Moderator madonnas Posted December 30, 2018 Author ATRL Moderator Posted December 30, 2018 105. Chelsea Jade - Pitch Dark Love that post-chorus synth line, it totally makes the song great for me. Otherwise it's totally a by the numbers catchy indie pop song, but well those can be nice sometimes. 104. EXID - Lady I actually had a difficult time choosing between I Love You and Lady, but went with Lady. I think that EXID has a very strong rapper and she ends up carrying the song for most f their hits. They are slowly becoming one of the most consistent kpop groups as well, releasing many enjoyable singles per year. Lady is an early 90s R&B/New Jack Swing throwback and the best kpop song to do it since Paradise by S.E.S. 103. Moe Shop - Baby Pink I don't know if the vocals were sampled or who they are, but the vocalist on this song went off. Love it when she speaks fast. 102. Bbymutha - D.I.Y. Bbymutha is one of the big female hip-hop winners of 2018. DIY is a song with a great southern twangy sample as the instrumental that discusses her outlook on her own artistry. She doesn't care if you don't like her music, or want her to change, or become more mainstream. She's gonna do what she wants because it makes her happy. It's a classy ode to not selling out that isn't condescending or holier than thou. 101. Kimbra - Human The "got a heart that's primalllll" hook is a huge moment. 100. Rina Sawayama - Flicker People are criticizing this song for selling out but honestly it sounds exactly the same style as all her other songs to me lol. I think it has a way stronger chorus than Cherry so I went with it instead of Cherry. 99. Travis Scott - Stargazing Wow what an OPENER. I love a good opener to an album and this is how you DO it. 98. Kids See Ghosts - Freeeee "I am frEeeeeEEEeee" is the best musical idea Kanye had this year (besides anything on Accelerate he did). It's just so fun to sing along to and what I've been a fan of Kanye for. It's absurd and stupid yet you find yourself drawn to it. 97. Mr Twin Sister - Tops and Bottoms You think this song is going to be about gay sex, but it's actually bout clothes. It's basically about wanting to wear what you want without society judging your value and your beauty and also talking about how we define ourself by what we wear - do you always want to do that? 96. Lyzza - Sleeve Once you get to the chorus, you realize Lyzza ain't playing around with you hoes. It's about being in love with a man that you know isn't any good but constantly coming back whenever he gives you a small amount of attention. Ouch, we've all been there! 95. Shopping - The Hype I love the two (male + female) lines going on at the same time. They complement each other and make the song super catchy while there's actually a lot going on there. Instrumentally, it's pretty simple but has a super effective riff. 94. Allie X - Science Yes, like others here I enjoy it when artists go in a more synth-wave direction. I guess it's rarer and rarer nowadays so it sound super fresh when done right, and Allie X strikes gold with one of her best songs ever. 93. Gugudan - The Boots Ah, whistling in pop music comes and goes but when used right, it's undeniably effective no matter what era you are in. It has that quirky kpop chorus too that seems to have way more parts than you think it already does. 92. Pusha T - If You Know You Know This is just classic Kanye production. It could have been released any time in the last 20 years. It enhances Pusha t's flow by playing to his strength. Lyrically this song is super strong and basically about being true to yourself. 91. Sigrid - Sucker Punch I'm a sucker for those big BIG hooks. Yes girl, this is how you make a pop song. She was on my worst of a couple years ago, deservedly so, so I was happy to see that it wasn't all bad.
Vilppu Posted December 30, 2018 Posted December 30, 2018 (edited) ain't nothing wrong with wild, i was surprised not to see it among your faves... maybe i worded it wrongly i thought banana allergy monkey sucked on first listen lmao i was a fool. dressroom, gucci flip flops and wide awake slap too. and FACESHOPPING, that + ponyboy convinced me to give her a chance and i'm glad i did oh, new update i love you is LIGHT YEARS ahead of lady omg. the boots is not great either, i thought gugudan would be a like a merely ok 6.5/10 group after a decent 2017 but ig not. ATRL Moderator madonnas Posted December 31, 2018 Author ATRL Moderator Posted December 31, 2018 90. MGMT - She Works Out Too Much Lovely upbeat zany Synthpop with spoken word of women saying things about working out. We've all kinda felt like this. You see someone you're interested in on a dating app but they are so into something that makes you think you're beneath them, or you just see someone more into fitness than you and feel like you'll be negatively judged by them. 89. Róisin Murphy - The Rumble / World's Crazy Can I count a double A side as one entry? I'm thinking about it. Let me know your thoughts if you feel like it's cheating, but I will say if I had to choose one song from this for this specific placement, it would be The Rumble. I love the outro that goes "dee dee da da da da" and the instrument is all over the place but hits all the right spots. World's Crazy just has such a killer bassline. Roisin Murphy KILLED IT this year, and gave us great Disco songs that still kept her creative edge while being a little more catchy and giving us more boppage... expect more of her. 88. Ariana Grande - Successful Does this song sample Animal Crossing? I know it officially uses Nintendo Switch stuff so maybe it does that too. What I love about this song is that the chorus' rhythm is basically the same all the way through and then she emphasizes the ""wrong"" syllables. This is something that has been done before by lots of people but the sorta zany kids friendly instrumental gives the song a sense of whimsy that Ariana rarely has. 87. Bali Baby - Backseat This is a throwback to the pop punk emo era of 2005. I was never the biggest fan of that era but I am a fan of Hip-Hop appropriations of it, apparently (well when done by females). The best part is "where do the stars go when the morning comes?" because that meaningless faux deep lyric is totally exactly what people would sing back then! very accurate. The song is pretty catchy and she gives us good energy and we really get the feeling that she really is singing about a real relationship that is falling apart/fell apart. 86. MorMor - Heaven's Only Wishful MorMor's sleek indie pop is a welcome sound in this music landscape, as this sound has been done before but not done to death just YET. The guitar and synth complement each other well as well as the random instrumental flourishes near the end of the song really make listening to the whole thing rewarding. 85. Kacey Musgraves - High Horse POOR KYLIE MINOGUE, she released a Dance tinged Country pop album yet nothing is even as half as good as this. The song is a great diss to Trump but also just an anthem for any women who has been victim to obscene amounts of mansplaining. The Pop and Disco elements to the song enhance Kacey's songwriting instead of trying to cover up mediocre songwriting, which is why the song is so strong. 84. April - Oh! My Mistake THE CHORUS THOUGH. OMG, I love how fast all the vocals are in this song. By the time the chorus comes I'm completely hooked, and the "oh MY mistake" totally works, I don't know why they have the exclamation point next to the "oh" in the song title it should be next to "my." This is by far April's best song and took them from an "eh" to "good" group for me. The pulsating synths also drive the song as well, this is definitely a song with a lot of momentum and then a great explosion. 83. U.S. Girls - Rosebud This is a gorgeous Nu-disco art rock bop that encourages all of us to go and find something that's special and meaningful to us. I think its very liberating to listen to as I do not feel pandered to. 82. Gang Gang Dance - Kazuashita Love this 8 minute song. It's basically the aura of Ray of Light Madonna matched with 2010s indie synthpop instrumentals. There's some random person naming colors and it reminds me of that one song on Kate Bush's 50 Words For Snow. It's just really one of those production trickery songs where they show us everything they can do in one song. 81. Ionnalee - Work LOVE the horns on this song, this is definitely one of the strongest songs on her disappointing and gives me capitalist hellscape overlord vibes where people are forced to work for eternity. It's a very villiainous song. 80. City Girls - I'll Take Your Man Speaking of villainous songs! Here we go, this anthem about how if you mess with JT or Yung Miami they will just sleep with your man is hilarious and infectious. They sell this concept really well and give you the entire City Girls fantasy. 79. Momoland - BAAM Well, Bboom Bboom was really just a rip-off of Serebro's Mi Mi Mi, and this is just a rip-off of Bboom Bboom. Somehow though, the Serebro was lost in the song and this one ends up being the superior listen. The song really just has more unique elements in it and make it feel like it isn't some rip off of another sound, and the chorus' pause before "BAAM" are excellent. 78. Poppy - X I absolutely loooooove songs that combine multiple mismatching genres. She goes from Metal to Sunshine pop on this one, but it doesn't really have a verse chorus structure, it's more like... chorus-chorus structure? The GIMME GIMME BLOODY hook is good but so is the sunshine pop one. It is well executed in my opinion and an exciting listen. 77. DAOKO - Juicy Her album released on the tail end of last year had one terrific standout, Juicy. It gives us a vibrant roller rink synth line that is used ad nauseam, but why wouldn't she? It basically carries the song. 76. Ravyn Lenae - Sticky I adore the way she uses her voice to actually personify the song's title. Her "you U U uu" definitely sounds sticky to me, I love little things like that.
