collin Posted December 24, 2018 Posted December 24, 2018 Mitski, Rosalia, Kacey, Sophie As usual, lots in common between our lists! (My Top 50 will be up soonish) Appreciate the carryover Pop 2 love. It made my Top 20 last year but realistically it would've been in my Top 5 this year!
Kingie Posted December 24, 2018 Posted December 24, 2018 Missed a few updates so I'll keep it short and sweet. Caution, Be The Cowboy and Golden Hour are all gorgeous. Same goes for the bits I've heard from Ephorize. Didn't know there was a Daphne & Celeste album this year! Or that they did anything at all since You & I Alone. Work It & the KOTO album sound interesting, will try to listen and maybe share some thoughts.
ATRL Moderator madonnas Posted December 26, 2018 Author ATRL Moderator Posted December 26, 2018 SORRY EVERYONE, I KNOW THERE WAS A HIATUS. Well it was Xmas season and I had stuff to do On 12/23/2018 at 10:53 AM, Unoriginal said: The top two this top ten is excellent Rosalia snapped (especially with her visuals), In a Poem is great (Rage of Plastics might be my soty if I didn't limit myself to singles), I've been coming back to Be the Cowboy recently and appreciating some songs I wasn't keen on initially, Golden Hour is stunning, most of OIL is incredibly strong and Pop 2 is THAT mixtape Track 10 not being in your highlights though Why on earth would you limit yourself to singles?? Track 10 is gr8, the only two weak ones (Porsche/OOMH which are still good) are like the only ones I wouldn't put as highlights but well you gotta draw the line after 5 or 6. It's definitely a sorta bait-and-switch, but I really enjoyed it. I have a thing against long albums now so the album definitely met my needs. ATRL Moderator madonnas Posted December 26, 2018 Author ATRL Moderator Posted December 26, 2018 Honorable Mentions • En Vogue – Electric Café - I kinda wish more people knew their album this year existed, although a lot of it was too meh for me. This funky uptempo track really surprised me, though. • Desired – Wake Up - This album was all about consistency that it was hard to pick a standout, so I went with my most played song. It's relaxing and upbeat at the same time. • Queen Key – Am I Wrong - This is Queen Key's signature song for now, and it basically explains her outlook on life. • Rae Sremmund – Powerglide - I know I'm alone in this opinion, but the verses are such a good build up to the chorus that the chorus doesn't ever feel BIG enough. Still, it's a nice throwback type track. • Caroline Rose – Money - A nice sorta rootsy punk track about selling out and being yourself. The song beats you over the head with the message but it works because it takes a sort of amoral stance on it. • YG – Big Bank - I love this minimalist beat so much, a fun posse track. • Daphne & Celeste – Paint Can - I LOVE how all over the place the instrumental for this is and the sorta spoken lyrics and the high BPM. It's a winner. • Hana Vu – Crying on the Subway - Nice sad-girl teenage track. • Kudo Kamome – Honeycombing - This has a great instrumental. She released two Eps and this is the only song that stuck with me. • Mai Lan – Missle - A build up that never really happens, though it does actually happen in the next song on the album. Still, she has a lot of production trickery to give us on this song and its worth it. • Tune Yards – Heart Attack - A nice, way way different songwriting style for her which is enjoyable. • Sneaks – Beliefs - They went from punk do deconstructed club. Well, ok. Sure, I like this song and the spoken hook is fun. • Tinashe – Throw a Fit - The best song she released this year. • Brockhampton – Boogie - They are very good at starting off albums in an exciting way. • Against All Logic – Know You - I don't know what song he's sampling, but I really enjoy how its sampled/ • Bad Gyal – Internationally - I LOVE this song's instrumental. Is Bad Gyal a culture vulture? • Fanatics-Flavor – Milkshake - I LOVE this stupid ass song, it's definitely for those of who stan sorta uncanney valley d-list pop. • House of Feelings – Touchscreen - First half of this song goes off, a great dance punk song that reminds me of YACHT. I kinda was disappointed that it sorta just falls apart at the end it feels like lazy songwriting to me. • Le1f – Fatty Acid - I thought he ended his music career last year? anyway.... I like the food puns. • New Optimism – Dr. My Ho - More for us Cibo Matto fans. • The Pom Poms – Watch Me - Love the trashy electrotrash from 2007 teas. • Weki Meki – Metronome - Love it when Kpop acts go artsy synthpop on us. The loud bassy synth kinda is a turn off for me after the 10th listen. • Zayn – Sour Diesel - His only good song. • Lady Gaga – Why Did You Do That To Me - Really really fun to sing along to. • Manon - Swipe - For those of us that miss the old KKB, I guess we have this.
Eeveelution Posted December 26, 2018 Posted December 26, 2018 Did you actually listen to Zayn's album? So brave. Why Did You Do That > the boring AC'd stuff on the soundtrack.
theblackestday Posted December 26, 2018 Posted December 26, 2018 I don't see anything worthy of being on your actual list so these are fair HMs
Tom Vercetti Posted December 26, 2018 Posted December 26, 2018 Other than powerglide, i'm not invested in the other songs. I do think Throw A Fit is better than a lot of joyride tracks however.
Ewan Chaos Posted December 26, 2018 Posted December 26, 2018 Paint Can & Money are my top picks here for sure. WHY DID YOU DO THAT DO THAT DO THAT a bop
Remmy Posted December 26, 2018 Posted December 26, 2018 Throw a Fit is cute, WDYDT? might be fun to sing along to but not super fun to listen to I still enjoy it though. Sour Diesel is actually one of the few highlights from his bloated album ddd
potent Posted December 26, 2018 Posted December 26, 2018 Powerglide is a cute bop. WDYDT is good but not that memorable imo.
Vilppu Posted December 26, 2018 Posted December 26, 2018 milkshake is good but kinda not as good as it should be? metronome is v overrated though still good enough for a kpop bside ig
ATRL Moderator kelly-clarkson Posted December 26, 2018 ATRL Moderator Posted December 26, 2018 Sour Diesel
pearlmercury Posted December 27, 2018 Posted December 27, 2018 i like money, heart attack, touchscreen and sour diesel

Not that I have a problem with Shallow or ARUTW but the fact that it's from the same artist wh gave us Applause/I Like It Rough/Government HOoker is kinda sad. 22 hours ago, theblackestday said: I don't see anything worthy of being on your actual list so these are fair HMs me neither. 22 hours ago, Tom Vercetti said: Other than powerglide, i'm not invested in the other songs. ATRL Moderator madonnas Posted December 27, 2018 Author ATRL Moderator Posted December 27, 2018 (edited) 150. Fischerspooner - TopBrazil FischerSpooner disappointed me with their extremely exhausting and underwhelming album this year, yet their trashy electro style still went off on TopBrazil which is a song about being a gigantic gay slut. The instrumental breakdown on the chorus is the highlight. 149. Quay Dash - U.A.F.W.M. Quay Dash is an exciting artist and I feel like she will have her moment in the next few years. The murky dirty instrumental is matched by her high confidence level. 148. Danny L Harle - Blue Angel Danny channels back the bubblegum on this single release with Clairo. What makes it effective for me is that the repeated instrumental loop that literally sounds winter-like. "My teardrop falls like now" becomes a more powerful lyric because of it. 147. Florence + The Machine - Big God Florence's best song in a minute dials back the dramatic vocals and gave her fans a more sophisticated songwriting approach. 146. Tyga - Dip Dip really is just a re-do of Taste in terms of the chorus. The chorus is hypnotic, and its enhanced by the Violin-led instrumental. Plus we got Nicki going off on a verse that she should have included on her own mediocre album. 145. Neneh Cherry - Natural Skin Deep This is the energy I wanted from Neneh for most of her album. I love sound and how the song completely breaks for for like a minute during the middle. When it gets back to the main groove again it sounds even better. 144. Tommy Cash - X-Ray Well, now that Die Antwoord are dead, we got this for those of us who wanted a song with the same chaotic energy as "I Fink U Freeky." 143. Jonghyun - Rewind Sexy whispering and expensive sounding house instrumentals is how I like my male Kpop songs to be done. 142. Kiesza - Phantom of the Dance Floor Were you in the mood for a Phantom of the Opera inspired song by Kiesza? NO, you weren't?? Too bad. It's such a preposterous and stupid concept that I am equally blown away and scared. What makes it work is how committed and invested she sounds. 141. Lykke Li - deep end Lykke Li went full Banks on this song, and the "swimming pool" hook stays in your head for quite a while. The second half of the chorus completely changes course which I found an unexpected delight. 140. Sevdaliza - Observer Sevdaliza goes full Pop again on this final track from her EP this year. This reminds me of one of her early singles, Backseat Love, and I think her balance of creepy and sexy in this more upbeat style is something she has to take advantage of more often. 139. M¥SS KETA - Una Vita in Capslock Deconstructed club meets hip-hop meets gay dance music. This italian bitch slayed me this year but I really didn't spend enough time with her album to warrant it on my list (my bad). Seriously if you like this kinda music and description look it up and listen to her album and this song. 138. El Perro Del Mar - Freedom is a State of Mind This song gives me random folk lady from 2011 that we all stanned for for like a month vibes. I like the instrumental a whole lot. 137. Gyeong Ree - Blue Moon Instead of following current Kpop trends, she decided to go for the classic gay club style bop, complete with lots and lots of synths, breathy sexy vocals, and autotune. Thanks sis, whoever you are. 136. Rae Morris - Dancing with Character Dancing With Character, the final song on Rae morris' album is a touching ballad about a boy who can't dance but has charisma and confidence anyway. If more ballads sounded like this, you wouldn't have me be so anti-ballad all these years. Edited December 27, 2018 by madonnas
