Eeveelution Posted December 22, 2018 Posted December 22, 2018 Sweetener and SITHOL are both good.. points made with the highlights for them also. I heard Jeannie Becomes a Mom the other day and it was a bopT. I'm intrigued to listen to rest if that isn't even in your top 3. re: your question, Ship Go Down was my fave on the album! I still found there were highlights, it was just more inconsistent with some boring fillers.
theblackestday Posted December 22, 2018 Posted December 22, 2018 Whew. Lots of great albums, too many for me to list I love how opposite we are in the strengths and weakness choices though Can't wait to see your top 10
World Eater Posted December 22, 2018 Posted December 22, 2018 Not Smelly Computer, I thought you'd know better Good to see Yves, Ari, Christine, Mariah and Marie tho I need to check out that Caroline Rose gal, I keep seeing her on many album lists
Pink Matter Posted December 22, 2018 Posted December 22, 2018 Another great set! I'm quite familiar with the majority of these albums and like them all to varying degrees. Janelle, Yves Tumor, Caroline Rose (I think I checked her out bc of you lol), Ari, Christine, and Marie Django Jane being a weakness but I Got The Juice being a standout? make it make sense I'm also pretty sure The ArchAndroid is Janelle's most critically acclaimed album, no?
Cloröx Posted December 22, 2018 Posted December 22, 2018 Working Class Woman almost makes it into my list Yeah, it's solid body of work

Breathing in my fave on that album tho ? Janelle's album is so great. i enjoy many songs on there, and she served great visuals with tessa thompson, that lesbian power. Are there more pop girls? the hit it hit it flip it flip it chorus makes me feel like im ascending into heaven :jonny: I didn't watch the videos to Janelle's album. I am music video-phobic. 12 hours ago, Lazuli said: Dirty Computer I don't get Yves Tumor and that album cover makes it hard for me to listen to them more than twice Noid is really good tho! Sweetener blazed as your standout tho... Chris and Caution There are moments that sound similar to Noid!! What's wrong with Blazed? I love the whole disco funk vibe. We should request she does more of that, if you ask ME 6 hours ago, Eeveelution said: Sweetener and SITHOL are both good.. points made with the highlights for them also. Bikini/Money are way more energetic and biting but you might like Cry or More of the Same if you liked Jeannie? Listen to it honestly, its up your alley. I liked the boring fillers more than the ones for her first. I'm anti-folk. 2 hours ago, theblackestday said: Whew. IGTJ is like, so so so good. What don't you like about it? as said before, Django Jane has good lyrics. Its just her rapping is kinda monotone to me and the song doesn't take me there (its not nearly as weak as I Like That or Pynk tho I just wanted to be edgy in including 3 singles lol). But if it were split into two as interludes it woulda been amazing. 5 minutes ago, Coklek92 said: Working Class Woman almost makes it into my list Yeah, it's solid body of work TASTE, glad someone else liked it. Tom Vercetti Posted December 22, 2018 Posted December 22, 2018 I never got an Avalanches feeling from Yves Tumor but interesting take. DC, Working Class, SITHOL, solid choices throughout.
ATRL Moderator madonnas Posted December 22, 2018 Author ATRL Moderator Posted December 22, 2018 There's really nothing to say about this album that hasn't already been said. I love that she blends Spanish folk genre Flamenco with modern R&B and Pop without it sounding like a sellout watered down pop version. Its more in line with alternative pop and experimental albums that get praised by critics and tastemakers. Not in a forced way!! Her visuals are also stunning and grand as well. Everything about this project is completely larger than life. Standout: Malamente, Di Mi Nombre, De Aqui No Sales Weaknesses: Maldicion Cupcakke basically takes what she had on Queen Elizabitch (WHICH WAS GOOD, YOU BANDWAGONERS!) and makes it... better. In every way. The production, the FLOW, thE LYRICISM. Everything is better. Some songs like Duck Duck Goose and Crayons have explicit predecessors (CPR and LGBT) but she treads completely new ground on a lot of standouts as well such as Post Pic, Meet and Greet, and Fullest. There are weaker songs (Exit, Total, Navel) but you still get a 10 track album of TENS. So yes this definitely deserves a top 10 placement. Cupcakke took what she was (a meme rapper) and made lemons out of lemonade, and proved everyone wrong about her talent and there's something about that that makes me so happy and proud as a longtime fan because I always defended her talent. The amount of crazy hilarious lyrics on here are too much to count but "nut in my ***** hair thats deep conditioner" is a personal favorite of mine. Standout: Duck Duck Goose, Fullest, Post Pic, Cartoons, Spoiled Milk Titties Weaknesses: Exit, Total Basically what I've done is pretend this project is actually Kylie Minogue's 14th album and not Golden. It's done wonders for my mental health! While touching on themes of modern feminism this art psych rock album gives us bangers that also make us think about the world today. The best moments are the more chaotic and overwhelming moments in my opinion since they fit the lyrical themes better but the more calmer songs also are effective. Standout: Rosebud, Incidental Boogie, Time, Rage of Plastics Weaknesses: M.A.H. Mitski gave us those full length SONGS for her singles, and kinda threw me for a loop with the actual album release. They were sort of like the tall pillars of the album while the rest are short burst of emotion. What makes that work though, is the eclecticism. No songs feel like they are imperfect lengths, they feel like snippets of whatever emotion she was feeling at the time. While Puberty 2 was more explicitly conceptual this is more "these are things I was feeling at the time." Sort of like reading someone's journal lol but it never feels too voeyuristic as Mitski makes the lyrics slightly relatable. Standout: Geyser, Nobody, Washing Machine Heart, Why Didn't You Stop Me Weaknesses: Two Slow Dancers HM YES, this is a classic. Cardi gave us one of those classic 2005-ish hip-hop album that has something for everybody. Personal songs for the ladies, inspirational storytelling, trashy bops, classy bops, self-love anthems, Latin flavor, you name it, this album has it. It's a wonderful exploration of tropes and Cardi B is the perfect person for this because she has such a high level of charisma and charm. Standout: Bodak Yellow, Money Bag, Get Up 10, Bartier Cardi Weaknesses: Ring
ATRL Moderator madonnas Posted December 22, 2018 Author ATRL Moderator Posted December 22, 2018 This album is a delicious slice of New Wave Pop that sounds like it was taken from some random nobody from the 80s and then polished. It's a very very very niche album but it's got a nice mix of zany, sentimental, romantic, and weird. This is definitely one of the most underrated albums of the year like seriously guys listen to it. It's only 8 songs long so there's no excuse. It's eclectic too as some songs are more on the 'rock' side of New Wave and some are on the more Punk/Synth side. Obvs I like those more but yeah. IT'S ALSO ON SPOTIFY/APPLE MUSIC. Standouts: Iziwaru Bakari Shinaide, We Should Kiss, Tokidoki, Wakaranakunaruno Weaknesses: Ai No Seide This album is also a future classic. Kacey really gave us the singer-songwriter album we were craving for. Something about her way with words just works well. I know a lot of people say they aren't a huge country fan but I am not either, the reason why I like this is def cause of my appreciation for Fiona Apple/Feist/Tori Amos type artists. So yeah if that's why you're hesitant, you have no excuse now because I solved that for you. I think she takes feelings we all know we have, and puts new twists on them. Standouts: Oh, What a World, Slow Burn, Wonder Woman, High Horse Weaknesses: Golden Hour ANOTHER underrated J-Pop album yall haven't heard. WELL, this is also on spotify (idk if AM) so listen to it bitch. It's under "ばいばいてぃーんずららばい" as the album, so no excuses on you not being able to find it, I trust you all know how to copy and paste. This is sorta one of those 160 bpm super fast pop music songs, and there are influences of Italio Disco, Freestyle, Happy Hardcore, and Disco. For those of you who are still sad that Perfume/Kyary Pamyu projects suck go to this girl cause she is giving you that quintessential Jpop sound but making it GOOD. Standouts: Dancing Like a snail, good BBQ, タイガーファイヤーサイバーファイター, LONELY KONG Weaknesses: TAIKUTSUが止まらない AH, yes we've all been a fan of SOPHIE for so long but it's nice to know that she is able to create a conceptual album and a more solid album than PRODUCT (which was good but didn't feel like an album cuz it was technically just a comp). This is one of those that definitely tells a story, I think? The album has three distinct parts, with the noisy bangers at the beginning, paranoid beauty in the middle, and loud obnoxiousness at the end. What surprised me is the more "ambient" sounding songs are gorgeous, and Is It Cold in the Water literally sounds like its a dance song trapped inside another ambient R&B song sorta? It's hard to explain but wow she really made a completely unique song with that. Anyway like duh I like this. Standouts: Whole New World / Pretend World, Is It Cold in The water, Faceshoping, Immaterial Weaknesses: It's Okay to Cry My #1 is neither from 2018, or technically, an album. You know what though? If Rolling Stone and Pitchfork can reward albums released halfway through december on the next year, SO CAN I BITCH. It was released after I created my list last year so was technically a non-entity but it really dominated 2018 in my mind and the mind of many other gays. She managed to take so much talent and not come up with a "too many cooks in the kitchen' type album. I think she used the features as little tastes and flourishes instead of trying to make it feel so collaborative, that way Charli's personality still shines through. This is by far her best LP length project, as I imagine it will be the template for alternative pop and mainstream pop music for years to come. Seriously, it's like already a cult classic. The album sounds like broken machinery mixed with Eurodance and my fave element is that this is one of the best uses of autotune ever. She takes what normally feels robotic and makes it feel totally human. Standouts: Lucky, Delicious, I Got It, Tears, Unlock It, Femmebot Weaknesses: Porsche
Tom Vercetti Posted December 22, 2018 Posted December 22, 2018 Quote Weaknesses: TAIKUTSUが止まらない The top 2 goes so well together. Imagine the pop 2 domination here had it been released at a more convent time.

Blue Rose Posted December 22, 2018 Posted December 22, 2018 Kacey really elevated herself this year. 2018 biggest winner tbh
Remmy Posted December 22, 2018 Posted December 22, 2018 Sweetener: Oh at you being on Team Pharrell. Well, you're very brave! Ephorize: Meh But according to my song ratings your standouts/weaknesses are lowkey on point. Golden Hour: This is my 1,000,000th time posting this in a Best Of but i just listened to this last week, I wasn't hesitant because it's country (I can tolerate "normal" country, and generally enjoy pop-country) but I heard High Horse when the ATRL hype was huge and it didn't impress me so I just paid her dust. A very huge mistake! The album really great and Oh, What a World is definitely my favorite. Pop 2: This has grown on me but I still don't like 3 songs. Lucky, Delicious and Track 10 do nothing for me, they have some cool moments but the execution just isn't iT. At least the rest is pretty solid.

Eeveelution Posted December 22, 2018 Posted December 22, 2018 7-10 are all good/great albums! Invasion of Privacy is a little high, but it's not a bad album. Golden Hour and Oil were both great releases from artists I was only partially-checking for before this year. I listened to the KOTO album and it didn't leave much of an impression honestly. Porsche is the best song of Charli's career.
theblackestday Posted December 22, 2018 Posted December 22, 2018 (edited) ahh we actually agree on the standouts and weaknesses on In a Poem Unlimited, our minds aligned and snapped.
