Navyofbadgals' DiaRy of 2018 // TOP 10 SONGS

I jsut knew I wasn't going to enjoy Drake's album so there was no point in subjecting myself to a 90 min album :rip:

NERD was cute for a few weeks but it didn't hold up (the Kendrick/MIA track goes awf still)

Choker suffers from sounding too much like Frank O on a good majority of the songs. For me it's like, why listen to him when I can listen to someone much better? The album was still alright and Starfruit LA slays so he at least has that going for him.

6lack's album was kinda ehh too. Hope he steps it up in the future.

Afbeeldingsresultaat voor chvrches love is dead

60. CHVRCHES – Love Is Dead

[SYNTH-POP]

I’m surprisingly not so familiar with CHVRCHES, so I guess that’s why I’m not disappointed and so many others seemingly are. There are some nice songs with great hooks on here and after listening to this I also listened to their previous album; which is obviously better.. but I think this is cute tbh. It could do with a little bit more personality and life but if you like synth-pop, then I’m sure you’ll find some cute songs here and there.

Afbeeldingsresultaat voor the kids are alright chloe x halle

59. Chloe X Halle – The Kids Are Alright

[R&B]

A solid debut with bops here and there. I will say that they feel somewhat lost still? I guess that’s fine when you’re just on your debut. It’ll be interesting to see where these girls end up; I like that they are taking fashion risks on red carpets.. I hope they can do the same in music

Afbeeldingsresultaat voor palo santo years and years

58. Years & Years – Palo Santo

[ELECTROPOP]

A nice follow-up from Communion with lots of bops. It’s nothing extraordinary but it’s fun and enjoyable even though none of the songs top the perfection that was ‘King’

Afbeeldingsresultaat voor very best goldilox

57. Goldilox – Very Best

[POP]

There’s some potential here but some songs go on for too long, and the album as a whole is a little bit too short for my liking. Still some of these songs slap (for the most part) and I wonder when the gheys will latch onto this and ha

Afbeeldingsresultaat voor seinabo sey i'm a dream

56. Seinabo Sey – I’m A Dream

[SOUL POP]

I was so excited for this after the first two singles of this album were amazing. I loved how Seinabo used Gospel and Soul in subtle ways whilst still being modern. The album as a whole however, was an underwhelming experience. There are still a few cute songs here and it has grown over me over time but I still think it’s a disappointment and her previous album (with the Kygo-assisted hit Younger) is still superior. If anything, take a listen at the amazing singles.

Afbeeldingsresultaat voor ultraviolet justine skye

55. Justine Skye – ULTRAVIOLET

[CONT. R&B]

Justine’s album is filled with a lot of bangers that are current and on-trend. That last part is also the downfall of the album. Justine’s album is very solid but she doesn’t do anything extraordinary or dares to stand out to really define herself as an artist. Still though, this is a fun record.

Afbeeldingsresultaat voor young fathers sugar cocoa

54. Young Fathers – Sugar Cocoa

[EXP. HIP-HOP]

If this album came out later in the year it probably would’ve been a lot higher. I was obsessed with this when it came out but now that I revisit it, I’m not that fond of it anymore. Sugar Cocoa is most definitely worth a listen, just don’t overplay it. It’s still an incredibly fun and unique record with plenty of songs with nice and surprising hooks.

Afbeeldingsresultaat voor kazuashita

53. Gang Gang Dance – Kazuashita

[NEO-PSYCHEDELIA]

If you’re into psychedelic music, this record is gonna be fun. I think Kazuashita has a lot of gems, I’m just not always in the mood for it and I’m not sure if all the tracks have a nice replay value. It’s only 10 tracks long including 3 ‘’interludes’’, so do check out xoxo

Afbeeldingsresultaat voor the future me hates me

52. The Beths – Future Me Hates Me

[INDIE ROCK/POP PUNK]

A really fun collection of songs here. It didn’t impress me a lot, but this doesn’t really have a bad song and is fun to listen to, though don’t overplay this too.

Afbeeldingsresultaat voor souldier jain

51. Jain – Souldier

[ART POP]

This is incredibly silly as an album with songs like Inspecta, but that’s also what makes this so fun and lovable. It combines (French) pop with Afrobeats and some middle-eastern influences with fun and silly writing. Souldier sometimes is a bit too repetitive in its hooks, but it’s hard not to love an album so silly yet so fun.

sidenote but fawopefapew this formatting omg atrl hates me huh

bloom was nice but nothing special rly, i liked his debut better. i kinda wanna stan snail mail just cuz everyone on atrl seems to irrationally hate her but then i remember her music and am like nvm. music was a strong point in hereditary but i cba to listen instrumental OSTs

There's another instrumental OST (or instrumental heavy anyways) released this year which is pretty good :eli: stay tuned to find out hehe

Bloom is excellent how dare you! I agree My My MY was misleading as the lead but the album was still a success in my eyes.

eh I guess. My My My was amazing so I was expecting a little bit more life. Still better than not charting because I didn't really care for Troye before My My My so this is at least something :fan:

Slow Dancing In The Dark is the best track out all these albums but I will say Troye kinda deserved better.

I don't understand the Snail Mail acclaim either lol, it was just okay.

I agree on Coeur De Pirate. The album is nice but it doesn't have much replay value compared to her other work

I feel like critics just wanted to create a new lorde with the snail mail acclaim but like.. ehm yeah

Joji may be a talentless hack but he's made some points with BALLADS 1. I also love how much controversy that Snail Mail album has caused considering how musically uneventful it is (no shade!)

eh I think the rock snobs outside of atrl still like it a lot? Maybe gheys made some points on not supporting her (that much)

Nice to see Laurel here (although i'm not really into that album from her). U should try out Quarantine/Dust next if u haven't already.

ehh I kinda went into Drake knowing that I would at least get a handful of bops out of it; and More Life (which was pretty long too) wasn't that heavy on filler so I kinda went in hopeful too

I haven't heard Cocoa Sugar yet but imo the only thing of worth in this update is Kazuashita

CxH, Young Daddies, Jain :clap3:

Churches is one of my least faves of the year. Them and Borns managed to release something worst than Camila. That takes talent tbh :clap3:

I agree with your opinion on Ultraviolet, it made my list as well but not very high. I do hope she continues to make more music in the new year that's more interesting.

I heard Ultraviolet only and didn't like it.

Honestly I thot that Love Is Dead would be a trainwreck when in fact it was only a slight disappointment. Still, they delivered their best song since their debut on this album :jonny:

Several points have been made with Cocoa Sugar and Kazuashita :clap3:

Posted

The Kids Are Alright was a nice debut with quite a handful of standout tracks. I think where it's ranked is good.

Seinabo Sey was actually a last minute album that I listened to and I enjoyed it a lot! Glad to see it represented on your list.

Cocoa Sugar was kinda ehh for me. I might have to give it another listen but I didn't enjoy it when it first came out.

The Beths were cute. I think they were worth a listen but I didn't really go back to it :katie:

Posted

Love is Dead was okay, but the singles were definitely the highlights tbh, didn't really feel worthwhile listening to.

I never really understood the hype about Years & Years :michael:

Sugar Cocoa :clap3:

Kazuashita :clap3:

Palo Santo :clap3:

Honestly, I think decent+ music is all we can expect from a want-to-be pop/rnb star nowadays... They just seem to have really hard times either finding their musical identity or putting their own personality into the music.

Posted

love is dead is garbage x. Get into their debut.

young fathers album isn't as fresh but not bad still. Gang Gang Dance and The Beths have a couple keepers.
