A bunch of my faves making into your lists. :celestial3:

Posted

Oop so I apparently made a mistake and forgot that my top 25 consisted of 26 songs  here is my top 26 then (now in order)

26. Lady Gaga & Bradley Cooper - I Don't Know What Love Is
A Star Is Born (2018 soundtrack).png

The most underrated track from the movie and also my favorite. A beautiful love song and an amazing duet. I always thought Gaga was doing a bit too much in her ballads and often either forcing emotion or not giving much emotion at all. This beautiful love song feels much more from the heart (I know this sounds cringy but sue me) and it has become my favorite track from the soundtrack, merely for being and feeling real.

25. Moses Sumney - Rank & File

Image result for rank & file

The best protest song of the year (idk what the competition is tho, but I know they lost).

24. MGMT - Little Dark Age
MGMT - Little Dark Age single cover art.png

LDA is first of all an incredibly enjoyable synthpop song with goth elements, but the song's description of depression/a depressed mood are beautifully captured in a dark and grim way.

23. The Carters - APESHIT
x

With help from homophobic legends Migos and polarizing producer Pharrell, we get one of the most fun trap songs of the year. Pharrell has been surprisingly working well with trap sounds (Stir Fry is also a great example). And whilst Apeshit is a representation of many of the problems of EIL (too braggadocious, no good contact with the audience and for some Bey being too much a rapper instead of a singer). Even with all of those problems it could represent, APESHIT is simply too addicting and catchy to say no to. It feels grande, and with two powerhouses (and help from others) it sure feels deserving in a way. Apeshit is the smash that got away

22. Ravyn Lenae - Closer (Ode 2 U)
RavynCrushEP.jpeg

With incredible production from Steve Lacy and a very simplistic but addicting chorus, Closer feels like the perfect love pop song. It's sweet, charming, catchy and portrays the emotion of love and need of love pretty well.

21. Kadhja Bonet - Delphine

Image result for delphine kadhja bonet

With Kadhja's beautiful vocals and production, you sometimes sink into the song and forget what it's exactly about. You're first just in for the ride, and so is Kadhja; she's playing with characters that are probably not her, but feel very realistic. Delphine reads like the tale of an obsessive lover who can't let go. Delphine takes you away but with every other listen you become more aware of the relationship between the narrator and Delphine.

20. Kadhja Bonet - …

Image result for childqueen kadhja

We love some controversial picks in the top 25, and I'd argue this is one! The closing track of Childqueen is nearly 3 minutes long and is filled with only instrumental and Kadhja singing lalala. But … is ethereal, it feels otherwordly; it feels as if Kadhja is singing this within our heads thanks to the production; making the closing track a surprising but very beautiful experience, and the perfect end to Childqueen where Kadhja sometimes played with characters in the adult reality. … feels like a sweet send-off and is undoubtedly the best album closer of the year.

19. Lana Del Rey - Venice Bitch

VeniceBitch.jpg

If Venice Bitch (and MAC) is anything to go by, then Norman ****ing Rockwell might just be Lana's best album to date. In Venice Bitch Lana feels completely commited to giving us an immaculate view of a relationship, starting off with a nostalgic feel and ending with psychedelic and experimental soft-rock finish, making the song nearly 10 minutes long. But no minute feels wasted with Venice Bitch. It's an epic and hypnotizing love song.

18. Let's Eat Grandma - Cool & Collected
ImAllEarsLetsEatGrandma.jpg

Cool & Collected does its name honor, starting off with a feeling that LEG is truly collected, but over the song we get subtle changes and we pick up that Cool & Collected is much more a vibe and mood that is aspired by LEG, but not something that is ought to be present. It's perhaps longing back to the emotions as a teenager; where one is cool, collected, bold and unaffected. They desperately want to be that; and through its production and lyrics they beautifully capture the feelings of being cool & collected; but also the feeling of wanting but not having.

17. Ariana Grande - No Tears Left To Cry
xx

Ariana's first effort since the terorrist attack at her DW Tour is the perfect comeback, and a great pop song. Rather than dwelling on the past and the emotions with it, NTLTC is a self-uplifting anthem that sees Ariana move forward rather than remain in the same position. NTLTC is not letting the bad events in your life win, and raise above the negativity and evilness of the world.
NTLTC also has an incredible opening, letting the listener feel like they're in for a slow and sweet song; but NTLTC is a strong up-tempo pop song that features the best Max Martin production since.. some time.

16. SOPHIE - Immaterial

xxx

15. Mitski - Washing Machine Heart

Be the Cowboy.jpg

With an instrumental that somewhat sounds like a literal washing machine, WMH became a clear standout from the already strong BTC. WMH sees Mitski describe a person (perhaps herself) as someone who feels powerless and wants to try so hard to feel loved; going so far that it might be unhealthy. Just like a washing machine, Mitski's protagonist needs to appear strong and do the dirty job, despite not being and feeling strong.

14. Unknown Mortal Orchestra - Ministry of Alienation

Sex and Food.jpg

My favorite track from S&F is not as funky or hard-hitting as some other tracks, but it's a self-aware track about technology and the western world that's absolutely beautiful. It feels as if the narrator is truly done, and giving up on this modern world that is dictated by machines.

13. Kali Uchis - After The Storm (feat. Tyler, The Creator and Bootsy Collins)

After The Storm album art.jpg

After The Storm is a smooth, addictive R&B track that sees everyone involved give their A-game. It's a feel good track about not giving up, which is perhaps not the most original theme, but ATS doesn't feel cliché in any way. Even in Isolation's diverse and strong tracklist, ATS still stands out with ease.

12. Janelle Monáe - Dirty Computer (feat. Brian Wilson)

DirtyComputer.png

we love another surprising pick for the top 25! DC is the perfect opener to Janelle's third studio album, focusing on the concept of Dirty Computers, which is brought back throughout the album and movie. The featuring of Brian Wilson, a legend, also feels like the perfect introduction to the album. An album where Janelle takes on the confidence of musical legends, like Prince, and she feels confident and strong, yet also inviting. Dirty Computer has something beautiful to it, and I sometimes don't know why I love this so much.. but here we are :cm:

11. Cardi B, Bad Bunny, J Balvin - I Like It

Cardi B, Bad Bunny and J Balvin - I Like It (Single Cover).png

I Like It on its first listen was an undeniable hit. The latin trap #1 (which is hard to get, not everyone has that) perfectly samples I Like It Like That, giving the 60s song a modern vibe. It's hard not to love an undeniable hit like ILI, that perfectly captures the summery feel and vibes and is incredibly catchy. I Like It is not some forward thinking and revolutionary rap song, nor does it want to be that. It is instead a perfectly executed and enjoyable song that is without a doubt the strongest #1 of the year quality-wise.

If this isnt Lana's best album I will riot.  It needs to be 10 songs long max.
