Disappointment Of The Year TV: (#10 - #1)

10) The Handmaid’s Tale – Hulu:

jro92iP.jpg

Second season was tough to watch, felt more desperate for awards and shock value than telling a cohesive story. The Buzzfeed article explains very well the problems I had with the season. It’s a good read:

https://www.buzzfeednews.com/article/louispeitzman/the-handmaids-tale-season-2-what-went-wrong

9) Maniac – Netflix:

KnV2XQH.jpg

Rather than conveying a creative and honest take on self-discovery and mental illness, the show seemed more interested in giving its actors hammy material for dramatic purposes. The trippy stuff is kind of tame, there’s nothing adventurous about it (the Game Of Thrones/LOTR/whatever Jonah was doing episode is one of the worst **** I’ve seen this year)

At least Emma Stone delivered what’s probably the best performance of her career so far; can’t say the same for Hill…

8 ) Sneaky Pete – Amazon Prime:

qke0FCT.jpg

The second season started on a good note, managed to heighten the stakes for our protagonist until the real Pete’s mom was introduced then suddenly everything has gone to ****. There was just too many useless storylines taking up space, it made me skip almost every part not involving Marius... The ending seemed somewhat promising but we’ll have to find out next year

7) The Purge – USA:

h4TCO0T.jpg

When you have a premise like that and you get offered 10 episodes and all you could come up with is dumb characters making stupid decisions over and over again (like the film version)… Truly a waste of time.

6) The Romanoffs – Amazon Prime:

ICzwRpN.jpg

A bunch of respected A-listers portraying entitled characters dealing with some lame issues, this goes on for like an hour (or 90 mins) then suddenly there’s an inexplicable twist making the episodes look smarter/deeper than they are when it’s actually the opposite.

5) The Good Place – NBC:

XBumrZX.jpg

The third season of Michael Schur’s comedy seems lost, quickly shifting from one direction to another, not giving itself enough time for its characters to breathe or grow. Instead it’s desperately chasing the next big possible cliffhanger to keeps audiences hooked. And it shows how badly it reflects on its character. Eleanor is even more Piper Chapman level bland, Chidi is still indecisive despite his extensive research (which kind of led to nothing?), the writers made Tahani pull one of the most tone-deaf/childish actions to show her good side (what’s with her deciding to marry Jason/give her money to every Australian out there??). And Jason stays being dumb (that’s the punch line… funny stuff).

It’s a big deal for me when watching a show to care for a character or to have any sort of connection… Halfway through the season, I was wondering why are Michael and Janet even helping these people when they’re clearly incapable of being good unless they’re together, or him interfering every now and then?? You mean to tell me for over 506 years, every potential candidate for the good place was perfectly okay with the fact that they couldn’t manage to get in only for Miss Eleanor Shellstrop and her gang to pop in and suddenly convince a coldhearted demon to soften up and question the point system?

At least it served its purpose of being a convenient collection of screenshots for people on twitter defining their mood.

4) La Casa De Las Flores – Netflix:

oFFmvIs.jpg

Predictable/calculated soap, more frustrating than fun to watch.

3) Another Period – Comedy Central:

KcAfJkK.jpg

Recycled jokes, obnoxious characters, way too loud. Glad it’s over

2) Insatiable – Netflix:

vYtAKpS.jpg

It’s nice to watch trash TV once in a while, nothing to get embarrassed over. But I hate that this is the one fomos chose to obsess over… It’s not FUNNY :fish2: it’s too loud, the acting is bad, the plot is boring, their vision of a “dark” comedy and the lack of self-awareness is all laughable… and not in a good way. But sure stick it to the sjws1!11!1!1!!

And the worst show of the year is...

1) Here And Now – HBO:

mq6ccIa.jpg

Another show that’s obsessed with commenting on the state of today’s America but adds nothing new to the conversation (see The Handmaid’s Tale, AHS: Cult, SNL etc...) Imagine going through hour long episodes full of unlikable characters just talking and talking and whining with minimal action or story progression. Having a diverse cast is important, but if you’re just using minorities as props to show how progressive you look you’re not doing anyone a favor… Even if you’re looking for a tiny bit of the Six Feet Under influences you can’t find any except that it’s a “family drama”… There was some supernatural elements to keeps things interesting but it felt disconnected from the show. I can’t even say if this has some good intention because it feels like an inside joke I’m not getting. Anyway this was cancelled for poor ratings (probably for the best)

TGP and Maniac didn’t deserve this x

Idk if I agrih with Handmaid’s Tale. I quite liked the season but I felt that often the characters were so close to growth or chance and then they just went back in their original behavior which is quite frustrating to watch. Also the ending sucked. Still thought it was pretty good tho

Posted

okay, a lot to say about this jnjfnjf

THM... tea. it felt contrived, forced and overdramatic. not that the first season wasn't melodramatic but they really went overboard and it kinda proved that Margaret's source material is superior to whatever the writer's staff came up with. i still liked a lot of it (Moss is marvelous, so is most of the cast, the visual side of things) but from a story perspective, it felt it didn't really push much forward. it feels like they want to make this a really long series, but it doesn't suit the material at ALL. the finale was especially frustrating.

Maniac I never started, looks boring and cheesy as hell. I stopped Sneaky Pete after a few episodes back in Season 1 (not because it was bad, it just kinda... was forgotten)

The Purge actually got made????? I remember reading about it last year but i didnt see a single thing about it :skull:

didn't even know Isabelle was in an amazon series but it already sounds tiring and boring

as for The Good Place... I agree. I don't really "dislike" this season but damn they really sacrificed characters for dumb ****. i think the entire approach to this season was wrong and set a bad tone. At least the pacing is picking up again.... we'll see..

Here and Now.... who?

The new season of Good Place is tragic. I even stopped watching. HTGAWM should’ve made the list too.

Insatiable is good

Yeah TGP was a letdown this season, it's a pretty obvious drop in quality. It doesn't seem like they've planned where they're going with the plot and it's troubling that another season will be coming.

I quite enjoyed Maniac though, much in part due to Justin Theroux and Emma's performances. Jonah was a disappointment as I had guessed before even starting the show, but I binged to see how it would end and thought it was a solid effort.

Posted

You nailed The Good Place :bibliahh: It was the only show I watched in this set. I wanna watch Sneaky Pete S2 but hearing that it's messy + Graham is leaving is not good news.

Insatiable? I heard that it got a lot of hate which turned into love at the end.

Yeah I think you should do it. Even if you don't have write-ups for anything. I think we have pretty similar taste so it'd be cool to see what your favorite/least favorite songs were this year.

Also, I read some of the descriptions for your TV list so far and they were a good read! You lowkey read some of them for filth :skull:

From a technical standpoint it was good but like you said none of the characters' actions align with their traits (except for Emily/Ofglen) which made the show soo full of itself.

Here and Now.... who?

You could just basically ignore all 12 episodes and watch the last one, that's how filler this season was...

Also if i have to look to another close-up of Moss' face i'm going to lose my **** :fish2: Enough is enough. Offred is not a good character. What was the point of showing us that flashback of her stealing someone's boyfriend if just to make us more indifferent to her struggle... And true, stretching the show (for 7 seasons :deadbanana2:) will do more harm to the overall plot. Ppl are already tired from the new one.

The Purge is just a 10 hour version of the movie :doc: Don't know why i bothered finishing this ****.

Romanoffs is a waste. That wasn't even Isabelle's best TV appearance this year

I have a lot of hope for the remaining episodes of TGP, let's hope they won't f*ck it up

As for Insatiable, i think we deserve some actual fun trash TV; not this one

I'm surprised no publication picked up on Jason's treatment on the show. You usually read abt this stuff pretty quick

As for Sneaky Pete, the first half was really good not going to lie, but going through the rest of the show was indeed a struggle

Yeah there was some backlash about the fat shaming. The thing is the show is too terrible to even receive this type of controversy.

I sincerely doubt the love for this is genuine...

S1 of THT is indeed worth checking. Really good.

Emma/Justin/Mizuno were the highlight of the show, it's not really essential TV

Yup and just like the movies it sucks

First 2 seasons of TGP are very fast to binge, go for it!

A lot of people here liked it, so maybe lol

There were some good moments like the one with Emma and the sister during the end, but aside from that nothing captured my attention. It's should've been a 2 hour movie when you think abt it.

I agree that Maniac was terrible. The Good Place is very similar to season 2 so I'm surprised you were disappointed. I avoided The Purge because it didn't feel good and the bad reviews stopped me from watching Here and Now (and now I see I'm not missing much). However, I have to disagree about Insatiable. It was the funniest thing I'd seen in a while. It was a trainwreck for sure, but I was living for it!

I liked The Handmaid's Tale season 2, although it did drag at points and I'm excited for the possible change of scenery in S3. Maniac was good but nothing that incredible. Haven't seen the rest :skull: Now I'm thinking I should have done a TV list...

The Romanoffs was self-indulgent in the worst way. I don’t mind shows that relish in their own conceit per se, so long as the storytelling is consistent. This wasn’t it though, and Weiner missed the mark. A style over substance passion project mess. The Handmaid’s Tale was lackluster, too. All these great shows enduring a sophomore slump is :'(

I agree about THT, I still enjoyed some moments but it was rough to get through. And The Good Place is so lost, I didn't even get through half this season yet, I will force myself to finish it before season 4 premieres and see where we're at then but if it doesn't get better, I will be dropping it next season :rip:

I was rooting for Insatiable ever since i heard the CW passed on it. From the initial description it was sold as a ****ed up dark comedy but it ended being very low budget it's like they didn't even try... i had a few chuckles here and there but overall, it wasn't all that

As for TGP i think that was the issue, it felt like the exact replica of S2 just with a different setting and more focused on the worst character of the show (Eleanor). People will justify it with the 'reboot' excuse but still; adding lame puns is not enough..

Exactly!! I still can't get over that Andrew Rannells episode :deadbanana2: That was peak tone-deaf Weiner

Sadly only few dramas survived the sophomore slump. I still hope THT could still recover, there's still more interesting aspects to explore!

I agree about THT, I still enjoyed some moments but it was rough to get through. And The Good Place is so lost, I didn't even get through half this season yet, I will force myself to finish it before season 4 premieres and see where we're at then but if it doesn't get better, I will be dropping it next season :rip:

Basically!! They need to prove they still got it with the remaining episodes or else what the point of going through the messy ride :doc:
