lhdang2000 Posted January 14, 2019 Author Posted January 14, 2019 02. Charlie Puth – Voicenotes Quote “I know a lot of people question my taste when it comes to my love for Charlie Puth but trust me when I said that his album is one of the best male pop albums in the 21st century. After all, there is a reason why “Voicenotes” earns a Grammy nomination. Coming into this era, I was a little sketchy because I was not a big fan of “Nine Tracks Mind.” To me, he sounds immature, cheesy, and almost like every single hot high school guy thinking that they could win the singing talent show. He immediately proved me wrong with “Attention.” The growth in his songwriting is insane, and the unique bass line is what I believe helped this song became a smash hit last year. Then “How Long” got released, and I know exactly Charlie is on his way to release one of his career-defining albums. His background as a music production and engineering graduate from Berklee helps him release such an album with sophisticated production layers like a long-time producer. “Voicenotes” easily gives Charlie some of his best songs ever. “BOY” easily comes to me with how smart Charlie uses the title track across the hook, the way he uses synth bass in the chorus. Even then, he manages to showcase his playful vibe during ‘go and treat me like’ that he would sexily mix the notes during live performances or the cringy line ‘you won’t wake up beside me/cause I was born in the 90s.’ Charlie is still the same cheesy guy three years ago, but the difference is he’s way smarter in how to express his ideas: sexier, smarter, and more effective. “If You Leave Me Now,” a Charlie’s collaboration with Boyz II Men, highlights the idea behind the album. Artists and producers do not pursue this type of track anymore, they tend to add big production and do weak vocals, but “Now” is a pure vocal track with as minimal instrument backup. To praise more is just extra, because the public has shown that they are not interested in another pop boy. But trust me when I said, all the Pop/R&B boys who is or has been in this industry needs to watch out for Charlie Puth because he is here to put out quality. HIGHLIGHTS: “BOY,” “Empty Cups,” “How Long” 01. Sabrina Carpenter – Singular: Act I Quote “I really don’t know where to begin with this. I love everything about this album. It’s short, sweet, cohesive, and it represents Sabrina as an artist beautifully. I was impressed with her ever since ‘Why’ from last year. She strikes off as someone who is elegant yet can be sweet and sexy as the same time. And she gives me exactly those personalities through eight tracks. I smell a bit of 90s, 00s RnB & Pop, some Ariana Grande, some Demi Lovato, but I don’t mind at all, because she took all those sounds to mix up something that’s very Sabrina Carpenter. Let’s talk about the songwriting. I saw her name in the credits for every track of the album, so I assume she did contribute her ideas and thoughts in those. I was really surprised at how clever ‘bad time for a good time,’ ‘don’t leave me hanging like the Mona Lisa,’ ‘it’s so romantic in Paris, […], but I already have love in L.A.’ I could name more, but I would love for you guys to give this album a try and identify the playful and naughty vibes from this teenager. One of the most reasons why I fell in love with “Singular: Act I” very quickly is its production. I don’t know how, but Hollywood Records and Sabrina Carpenter did pull off a decent production team with Stargate (“Almost Love”) or Oak Felder (“Sue Me”). However, I’ll give the spotlight to Mike Sabath (Little Mix’s “Wasabi” or Liam Payne’s “Familiar”, etc.) for his incredible solo production work on “Hold Tight,” the best song on the album. As the executive producer, Sabrina Carpenter has utilized all the power to put out the strongest effort of the year. She exudes the confidence, and she’s coming for every pop girls out there.” HIGHLIGHTS: “Hold Tight,” “Sue Me,” “Bad Time.” 01. The Carters – Everything is Love Quote “I hope no one feels this choice is surprising or unexpecting. It was obvious from the first tracks that this album is another attempt of recreating the ‘surprise releases’ hype that Beyoncé is known for. Other than that, the quality of this album is intolerable. First, Beyoncé should stop rapping. I did not sign up to hear her do an audiobook on trap beats. At least the audiobooks have more emotions that what she put in here. Second, those lyrics are becoming embarrassing. I wonder how fun it is for them to relisten to: “top two and I ain’t number two” or “If I gave two ****s about streaming numbers, would’ve put ‘Lemonade’ up on Spotify” during their car rides now. I doubt they would even want to appreciate their own efforts by putting it on. The Louvre is not the only thing that closed with “Everything Is Love,” apparently The Carters’ creative flow did, too.
lhdang2000 Posted January 14, 2019 Author Posted January 14, 2019 CLOSING And there you have it, the finale of lhdang2000's Best of 2018. This is my 6th year, and I realize I love making these countdowns so much. And personally, I think this is one of my most successful years with the amount of people joining and commenting. Sabrina won big with Song of the Year and Album of the Year, but I will have to give shoutout to Demi Lovato, Charlie Puth, and Benjamin Ingrosso for making this year more exciting for me. It was not the best year in music, but I appreciate the efforts, and I believe everyone will make a bang this year to close out a fantastic decade. I know I did not update as regularly as I thought I would, but I have managed to end on the day before school, which gave me less pressure to update everyday with schoolwork. See you next year with all of the decade's category, I currently have a plan for Top 500 Songs of the Decade, and many many more, who knows? I could lose interest by the middle of the year and just do year review, but anyway, I will be back. RECAP 200. Benjamin Ingrosso – I’ll Be Fine Somehow (Benjamin Ingrosso’s appearance: 1 of 9) 199. MP2K Posted January 14, 2019 Posted January 14, 2019 No one actually cares about or wanted a Bey-Jay album, even the ones that pretend to stan, so
ATRL Moderator kelly-clarkson Posted January 14, 2019 ATRL Moderator Posted January 14, 2019 YASSSS Singular Act I is amazing Hold Tight, Sue Me and Bad Time are my favorites songs from the album too It's so crazy to see how she improved the quality from her latest album!!! Voicenotes is full of bops I enjoyed your list!! You served so much taste Ready to see your lists on December again
ATRL Moderator Legend E Posted January 14, 2019 ATRL Moderator Posted January 14, 2019 I don't like the top 2, but congrats on finishing your best of ❤️
Brandon Posted January 15, 2019 Posted January 15, 2019 Congrats on finishing your best of countdown. See you next year!
Ghostlysnaker Posted January 15, 2019 Posted January 15, 2019 The Carters worst album Voicenotes being #2 in the best album section
Remmy Posted January 16, 2019 Posted January 16, 2019 Attention and How Long are solid Charlie tracks though I don't think I'd care for the full album, plus I've heard other songs and they were forgotten seconds after listening. Sabrina is a cute #1 pick, I wasn't really expecting it for some reason (I forgot she took the #1 on your Best Songs list as well.) Bad Time goes off quite a bit Mona Lisa deserves a trinity spot! Hmmm, I can understand your feelings on EIL but there's certainly worse out there This was another slayful Best Of and I'm ready for more this December Damn @ a top 500 for the decade, I'm gonna try to do some decade list(s) as well but this makes me realize that I should probably extend my songs category. I was just planning on doing 100, though I have no idea how I'd be able to cut it down that far.
