I agree re: Dead Magic but it just seemed very much up your alley lol.

Nice to see Caution, and she'll probably remain underrated until it's too late.

Caution was a cute album from what I remembered. Only played it 2 or 3 times. Gtfo and A No No are bops tho

Yeah ? Hopefully we can appreciate her more when she's still with us! Not like she'll ever leave us because she's immortal and Triumphant (Get 'Em)

Yeah I feel you, especially on Mount Eerie. His music is not the kind of stuff that you'll play a lot but still... sticks with you, you know?

you should! Cry! is honestly my least fave on that album so if you liked that song keep in mind everything else is even better!

nathy-peluso-la-sandunguera-lyrics-f2d93a.jpg

#70. Nathy Peluso - "La sandunguera"

(latin rap)

from 'La sandunguera (EP)'

Latinas truly stay winning!

 Cupcakke.jpg

#69. CupcakKe - "Duck Duck Goose"

(hip house)

from 'Ephorize'

One of the most fun sex songs she's ever recorded. The hook is extremely catchy and nearly every line on this track is fire. We love the Queen Of Rap!

#68. ECCO2K - "AAA Powerline"

(alt R&B)

from ?

This was produced by Yves Tumor under the pseudonym Shanti, and the production might be the best thing about the song, sure, but ECCO2K's repetitive yet catchy delivery makes for an entrancing experience. Like a midpoint between soundcloud rap and Boards of Canada.

 84a81b6739dc5a50c614d40afbcab79aChelsea_Jade___Laugh_It_Off_389x389.jpg

#67. Chelsea Jade - "Laugh It Off"

(synthpop)

from 'Personal Best'

Easily the best single off of her album. Perfect synthpop that a lot of both indie girls AND pop girls should be taking notes from, in my opinion.

500x500.jpg

#66. Lauren Auder - "These Broken Limbs Again Into One Body"

(art pop)

from 'Who Carry's You'

Fun fact: Lauren Auder's Who's Carry's You EP was left off of my EP charts last minute. There were some things I wasn't totally in love with it about it, so I decided to leave it out, but this track is one of the main reasons I considered it in the first place. Slow, artsy trip-hop, that sounds like the midpoint between King Krule, Tim Hecker and Portishead, wonderful, deep vocals and just... all around greatness.

#65. Dorian Electra - "Career Boy"

(synthpop/bubblegum bass)

from ?

There is something about this song that makes me... very sad? Like there's something inherently sad about someone making an ironic joke about the way capitalism forces to love our jobs in order to find some sort of happiness. We love a rehabilitated libertarian!

#64. Tommy Genesis & Charli XCX - "100 Bad"

(trap rap)

from 'Tommy Genesis'

The Tommy Genesis album... OK I had quite a lot of mixed thoughts about that one. On one hand, you have really generic emo-pop influenced tracks that sound like Radio Disney version of Lil Uzi Vert, on the other you have badass bangers like "Tommy", "Daddy", "Play with It" or this. Which is just great. And the Charli XCX remix/version makes it even better.

 So%20Right%20_%20Marie%20Davidson%20cover.jpg

#63. Marie Davidson - "So Right"

(synthpop)

from 'Working Class Woman'

The pop heart of Marie Davidson's album, and even though it's as clubby as most of her album is... damn is this a really fun pop song.

1542725916_b15dddce31f4b3b889ffcef5a1b2a

#62. Earl Sweatshirt feat. Navy Blue - "The Mint"

(abstract hip hop)

from 'Some Rap Songs'

My fave off of the two singles from 'Some Rap Songs'! That jazzy piano loop is extremely catchy and both Earl and Navy Blue deliver great verses on top of it.

 unnamed-9-1520610126-640x640-1523631462-640x640.jpg

#61. Elysia Crampton - "Oscollo"

(digital cumbia)

from 'Elysia Crampton'

Elysia's music has always taken from genres such as cumbia or huayno, but perhaps never as obviously (and as well) as in this song. Kind of takes me back to my childhood. Same with the video, which is a total throwback to mid-to-late-00's Andean commercials and social media.

JPEGMAFIA – Veteran

Genre: Glitch Hop, Industrial Hip Hop

Political Hip Hop, Trap Rap, Cloud Rap, Hardcore Hip Hop, Sound Collage

Country: USA || Label: Deathbomb Arc

Baltimore rapper and producer Barrington Hendricks a.k.a. JPEGMAFIA is a provocateur, sure, but to only pin him down as this exclusively feels quite reductive of what he does. His usage of irony, sarcasm, jokes and just all around strange stuff in his lyrics it's what separates him from other rappers, his takes on politics can be funny and edgy as genuinely interesting and complex, touching of themes ranging from black identity to ****ing Tomi Lahren to a hypothetical Morrissey death. But the production on Veteran is also on another level, extremely packed with samples that have enormously varied sources, like the clicking of a retractable pen, video games, field recordings or old school underground house music. It's refreshing, creative, interesting and unique. Maybe not for everybody, but certainly a one of a kind rap album.

LISTEN

Highlights: "Real Nega", "Thug Tears", "Baby I'm Bleeding", "Rock n Roll Is Dead", "DD Form 214" (feat. Bobbi Rush), "Whole Foods", "I Cannot ****ing Wait Until Morrissey Dies", "Rainbow Six" (feat.

You’ll like it if you like: Vince Staples, Milo, Arca's Stretch era, clipping.

Pendant – Make Me Know You Sweet

Genre: Ambient

Glitch, Drone, Ambient Dub, Nature Recordings

Country: U.S. || Label: West Mineral

In 2016, producer Brian Leeds, who has recorded under several names but is more known for his works as Huerco S., released an album under that pseudonym called For Those of You Who Have Never (And Also Those Who Have). This record pushed him away from the lo-fi, experimental house he had been known for at the time, into what is basically ambient music, even though there some remnants of his dance music projects. It might be one of the best albums of the decade, in my opinion. In Make Me Know You Sweet, his debut release as Pendant and the first under his own label, West Mineral, he leaves dance music completely behind for ambient. That does not make the music any less interesting though, as it is as dense and wonderful as before, with lots of layers and details that make it stand out from an average ambient record that its only purpose is for you to play it in the background.

LISTEN

Highlights: “VVQ-SSJ", "BBN-UWZ", "IBX-BZC", "OXI-GKK"

You’ll like it if you like: Huerco S., Gas, William Basinski, Biosphere, Felicia Atkinson, Laurel Halo

The Body – I Have Fought Against It, But I Can't Any Longer.

Genre: Drone Metal, Death Industrial

Post-Industrial, Neoclassical Darkwave, Power Electronics, Industrial Metal

Country: USA || Label: Thrill Jockey

The Body are a band who make dark, abrasive, loud music. This becomes apparent if you randomly click play in any of their most played tracks. They are mostly classified as metal, but not necessarily limited by it, while still maintaining the aggression of that style of music. Their album I Have Fought Against It, But I Can't Any Longer is proof of them pushing their boundaries and existing outside of most genre realms, while still keeping their identity as a band, what characterizes them — like the howling of vocalist Chip King or their overwhelming sense of dread and hopelessness that you can find in nearly all their work. But this is a record that has very visible influences coming from classical music, techno, industrial, dub, trip hop, harsh noise, darkwave or ambient music. And the fact that they make a record so diverse in sound work so well, and sound as bleak and violent as it does, makes it one of the most impressive, important metal releases of this year.

LISTEN

Highlights: "The Last Form of Loving", "Can Carry No Weight", "The West Has Failed", "Nothing Stirs", "An Urn", "Ten Times a Day, Every Day, a Stranger"

You’ll like it if you like: Sunn O))), Godflesh, Diamanda Galas, Boris, Zola Jesus, The Haxan Cloak

Against All Logic – 2012-2017

Genre: Deep House

Microhouse, Outsider House, Funky House

Country: USA || Label: Other People

In early 2018, Chilean-American producer and vocalist Nicolas Jaar quietly released an album under the name Against All Logic. He had previously performed under this pseudonym and released some singles under it, but 2012-2017 was his first proper record as such. And it was as good as you would expect from him. While Jaar's music is usually rooted in the genre of house, he is not limited by that genre, rather taking elements from experimental, ambient or psychedelic music into this context. That is not the case with this record though, as it is way more straight-forward, while still managing to be extremely inventive and unique in its own right, thanks to its creative usage of samples or its insane grooves. This is one of Jaar's most fun and interesting projects to date, and a record that lives up to house's highest standards, both past and present.

LISTEN

Highlights: "This Old House Is All I Have", "I Never Dream", "Hopeless", "Such a Bad Way", "Cityfade", "Flash in the Pan", "You Are Going to Love Me and Scream", "Rave on U"

You’ll like it if you like: DJ Koze, Theo Parrish, Moodymann, Leon Vynehall, John Talabot

Elza Soares – Deus é mulher

Genre: Vanguarda paulista, Art Rock

Art Punk, Math Rock, Samba-Rock

Country: Brazil || Label: Deckdisk

It doesn't take a lot of googling to find out that the current political situation of Brazil isn't at its best, and even before the election of Bolsonaro. And, to be fair, legendary singer Elza Soares' latest album, Deus é mulher isn't necessarily about that, but it definitely reflects a lot of what is going on there. This record is decidedly less gentle and soft than its predecessor, with her musicians taking her sound into a louder direction, more rock than music that is traditionally associated with Brazil. It's less self-reflective and more gutsy, but just as cathartic, not only for her, but also for the listener — especially those who understand the lyrics. It's one of the most important statements from the now 81-year-old singer, who constantly proves herself to be more necessary than ever in this climate, releasing some of her best music to date in the process.

LISTEN

Highlights: "O que se cala", "Exú nas escolas", "Banho", "Eu quero comer você", "Língua solta", "Hienas da TV", "Credo", "Deus ha de ser"

You’ll like it if you like: Metá Metá, Protomartyr, Juçara Marçal, Priests, Battles
