Remmy Posted December 30, 2018 Author Posted December 30, 2018 "Best" Films [[ #33 - 29 ]] Before we get to the real best films, we gotta sort through the mess! [[ Eligiblity period: October 1st, 2017 - December 21st, 2018 ]] 33. Downsizing [F+] Released: 12/22/2017 || RT: 49% / MC: 63 Starring: Matt Damon, Hong Chau, Kristen Wiig There's always gotta be at least one F score every year, huh? This movie is basically split into 2. The first hour is what you've seen in the trailers, a man living his life normally until he decides to become tiny - pretty good stuff on its own. Then once the second hour starts, it's like you can suddenly feel yourself taking a detour into S**tsville. It's one of the most boring things I've ever seen in my life, with an annoying ~save the world~ message they shove down your throat, which is a total shift from the main plot. This actually reminded me of Tomorrowland (2015), which also got an F that year. Anyway, hour 1 would get around a B from me, and hour 2 is a disaster, so add those up and this is what you get. The previews may seem intriguing, but don't waste your time! 32. Venom [D-] Released: 10/05/2018 || RT: 28% / MC: 35 Starring: Tom Hardy, Michelle Williams, Riz Ahmed With almost every scene, there's at least one questionable decision they made. Even the mid-credits scene got an eyeroll out of me. If you're able to somehow ignore the huge pile of flaws, I guess you can have some fun with it? Overall, Venom isn't a complete dumpster fire but if it was longer than a measly 92 minutes, it definitely could've been. 31. Christopher Robin [D+] Released: 08/03/2018 || RT: 72% / MC: 60 Starring: Ewan McGregor, Hayley Atwell + Jim Cummings (voice) Didn't have high expectations for this in the first place but I didn't expect my score to be so low, either. It's very slooow and dreary, way more gloomy than it needed to be. The title character is the main reason for this, and I wasn't here for him 95% of the time. #NotMyChristopherRobin Also at the end I actually said "That's it?" out loud... 30. A Simple Favor [D+] Released: 09/14/2018 || RT: 85% / MC: 67 Starring: Anna Kendrick, Blake Lively, Henry Golding This is apparently a comedic thriller but I didn't really feel the thrills and I didn't laugh much either. Plus the third act is way too messy and complicated, with an outcome that left me mostly unsatisfied. It's not a complete waste of time or anything, but I wouldn't recommend it (despite Anna Kendrick and Blake Lively slaying.) 29. Ready Player One [D+] Released: 03/29/2018 || RT: 72% / MC: 64 Starring: Tye Sheridan, Olivia Cooke, Mark Rylance Pretty great concept, not so great execution. I feel like with every 1 thing they got right in this movie, they got another 1 wrong. The writing was noticably off in plenty of areas, most attempts at comedy were misses, and the villain... yikes. Though on the other hand: the pacing was decent, there were some moments I enjoyed, and it definitely wasn't bad enough for me to stop watching. It's just that the overflow of references, nostalgia and cool special effects weren't able to blind me from its flaws. It sucks because the trailers were so strong, too...
