I've been super busy and preparing for Hurricane Irma so haven't had time to post lately but I've been tracking and compiling the charts slowly so here there are the weeks ending August 31st and September 7th, with tracking running through the week ending August 31st. Week ending August 31: Calvin Harris rises 13-1 with "Feels" thanks to an increase in Airplay and the release of its music video. The song is his 4th #1 and first after spending 8 weeks @ #1 in 2016 with "This Is What You Came For" which became the song of the year. Pharrell and Big Sean each score their second #1. Pharrell hit #1 with "Happy" in 2014 and Big Sean with "Clique" with Kanye West & Jay-Z. Katy Perry on the other hand, scores her 10th #1 on my chart and first since "Dark Horse" in 2014. She becomes only the 7th artist on my chart to score at least 10 #1s. More on Katy later on. Back to the chart, Cardi B rises 10-4 with "Bodak Yellow" and scores her first top 5 while Lorde's "Perfect Places" rises 9-5 giving Lorde her 2nd Top 5 from Melodrama. DJ Khaled & Kesha drop one place to #2 and #3. Demi Lovato debuts at #17. Week ending September 7: Katy Perry & Nicki Minaj rise 13-1 thanks to the premiere of its music video and the atrocious VMA performance (minus Nicki's part), and an increase in Airplay. Katy thus replaces at #1 and earns her 11th #1, putting her in 5th place for the most #1s on my chart. Leading the pack with the most #1s on my chart are Rihanna (32 #1s), Lady Gaga (22 #1s), Taylor Swift (18 #1s), and John Mayer (14 #1s). Nicki Minaj scores her 7th #1 and first since hitting #1 with Ariana Grande on "Side To Side" last year. Back to the chart, Calvin Harris falls 1-2 thus giving Katy control of the top 2. Cardi B rises 4-3 while DJ Khaled falls 2-4. Charlie Puth rises 7-5 with "Attention," the first top 5 for Charlie. Taylor Swift debuts at #19 with "Look What You Made Me Do." Katy Perry, Pharrell & Big Sean. Katy replaces herself at #1 as "Swish Swish" drops 1-3 after one week on top. "Feels" rises to the top spot thanks to another music video that came out in the last few days and strong airplay. Cardi B rises 3-2, a new peak for the Dominican/Trinidadian rapper. Another rapper, Logic, debuts at #4 with "1-800-273-8255" featuring Alessia Cara & Khalid. The song is the first chart entry for Logic while Alessia and Khalid have had top 10s before. Khalid also debuts at #21. At #5 is DJ Khaled, Rihanna & Bryson Tiller. The top 5 is comprises entirely of songs either by rappers or featuring rappers, first time in a while. Outside of the top 10, Charlie Puth drops 5-6, J Balvin & Willy William stay at #7, Kesha drops 6-8 with "Praying" while Luis Fonsi & Daddy Yankee's "Despacito" stay at #9. This is perhaps the last week of "Despacito" in the top 10, it only holds at #9 because of a slight increase in Video Plays as Airplay is falling. Lorde rounds up the top 10 with "Perfect Places" as "Green Light" departs the top 10 for the first time since it rose to $9 25 weeks ago in March 2017. The song stayed between #s 3-9 for a lot of weeks until it rose to the top of the chart after 15 weeks in the top 10, spending a total of 4 weeks on top. Three other songs debut this week with "Portugal. The Man" making its chart debut with "Feel It Still" at #18. Maroon 5 & Sza debut at #20 and Lil Uzi Vert debuts at #22 with "XO TOUR Llif3." Bruno Mars' "That's What I Like" retires after spending 25 consecutive weeks in the top 10 this year. The song spent a week on top. For the week ending September 21, 2017, Cardi B rose 2-1 to earn her first #1 on my chart with "Bodak Yellow". Rising 4-2 are Logic, Alessia Cara & Khalid with "1-800-273-8255" while Calvin Harris, Pharrell, Katy & Big Sean drops 1-3 after two nonconsecutive weeks on top with "Feels". Lorde rises 10-4 with "Perfect Places", a new peak for the song as Katy & Nicki drop 3-5 with "Swish Swish" which spent one week on top two weeks ago. Outside of the top 5, "Wild Thoughts" falls 5-6 while Kesha's "Praying" rises 8-7. The everlasting "Despacito" rises 9-8 as J Balvin & Willy William drop 7-9, giving Luis Fonsi the highest ranking Spanish song of the week again. Demi Lovato enters the top 10 with "Sorry Not Sorry" as it rises 12-10. The only entry is Jessie Ware at #19 with "Midnight." For the week ending September 28, 2017, Mumford & Sons return at #1 with "Believe" after the song rises 10-1 in Airplay and debuts at #1 in Video Plays due to seeing them in concert this past week. The song peaked at #2 for 3 weeks back in 2015 and ended up the year as the #5 song of the year based on chart performance. The song is also the first song to retire from my chart and return to the chart. Based on rules I established a couple of years ago, a song can only return to the chart after it retires if it ranks in the top 5 for one week. Due to this rule, Mumford's "Thompkins Square Park" fails to chart as it would rank at #7 this week. With "Believe", Mumford scores their third #1 on my chart after "I Will Wait" back in 2012 and the aforementioned "Park" in 2015, which rules for 5 weeks. Cardi drops 1-2, Logic 2-3, Lorde stays at #4 and Lil Uzi Vert rises 12-5 with "XO Tour Llif3." Outside of the top 5, Calvin drops 3-6, Demi rises 10-7, Luis Fonsi stays at #8. "Despacito" will undoubtedly rise next week as I saw him in concert yesterday. Taylor Swift returns to the top 10 with LWYMMD as it rises 11-9. Sam Smith debuts at #10 with "Too Good At Goodbyes." He last charted with "Omen" by "Disclosure" as it peaked at #2 in 2015. Taylor debuts another song at #24 and Camila Cabello debuts at #25. Lorde's "Green Light" and Shakira's "Me Enamoré" both retire. Both songs hit #1 earlier this year. Luis Fonsi & Daddy Yankee's "Despacito" rises 8-3 due to an increase in Airplay and Video Plays because of seeing him in concert last Saturday. Unlike Mumford & Sons, whose concert was the day before the tracking week ended, Luis Fonsi's was actually at the beginning of the tracking week so it didn't enjoy the Airplay needed to return to the top spot. The song hits the top spot thanks to rising to #1 in both Airplay and Video Plays. The song takes the top spot from Cardi B's "Bodak Yellow" which falls to #3 after 2 nonconsecutive weeks on top. At #2 is Beyoncé Remix of J Balvin and Willy William's "Mi Gente." The original peaked at #3 a couple of weeks ago and ranked at #17 last week. Per personal chart rules, I only let Remix' chart if they 1) are not substantially different from the original and 2) if they earn more points than the original. In this case, "Mi Gente" meets both prongs. Although the Remix is charting separately, per year-end purposes, both versions will be combined. This is unlike "Despacito" which did not meet either prong. At #4 is Lorde with "Perfect Places" and Logic, Alessia Cara & Khalid fall 4-5.
