It would of been funny if Neptune was called Myanus, so when the 7th grade teacher asked which gas planet is farthest from the Sun you could of cracked back: "It's either Uranus or Myanus, cause both are gassy."
Aurora Posted May 5, 2018 Author Posted May 5, 2018 23. OreGuy 24. Xedretinz Lododnz 25. SeanKevinMusic ...and with that, we have our final Top 25. The deadline has passed (about 12 hours ago) and we won't be accepting any more entries for this episode/round. Judging for Episode 2 has already begun and Episode 3 is expected to come soon™️.

ultraviolence.xx Posted May 6, 2018 Posted May 6, 2018 (edited) U MAGAZINE THIS WEEK'S TRACK REVIEWS This post rounds up the first installment of our reviews of this week's chart debuts. Later installments will be posted in later digital issues. @MattyTacos – "Loverdream" ok, the refrain is a slay. giving me troye vibes but like good troye vibes, not like tumblr-basic troye vibes. “caught in a trinity” doesn’t really work in the chorus and feels forced, unless you’re making a threesome reference, which doesn’t feel like what you’re going for? the structure is really odd too which i think is a cool switch-up. “silk city” whew cover me in spider emissions king. one thing that kind of strikes me is that there are a lot of metaphors that are outside the central metaphor and kind of make it feel disjointed: being someone’s “headline news”; a “silk city”; “stitch[ing him] to [you]”; being “locked in”; the “castle walls”… there’s just lots of metaphors that feel kind of out of place of the wider metaphor, which isn’t a huge deal in small instances, but threading them all into one song feels kind of back-and-forth. it reads way easier than some of your other entries i’ve read, tho, and feels very natural yet very beautimous at the same time. favorite part: “roses begin to blush / blooming at my touch” @Obsession – "Lost in Misery" ok the chorus is a wig. the first verse feels familiar to me, like i’ve read it before (even though i haven’t). i like the concept a lot, about not feeling worthy enough to accept someone else’s love, but lines like “how could i love you? i can’t even love myself” sound more like observations from outside of this person – it doesn’t feel to me like someone in that mindset would be able to see that about themselves. it’s technically put together very well, and the bridge and last chorus pair very well, so wig! favorite part: “the worlds you built around me are all thrown into flux / and at last, i know the sun has set on us” WIG EVISCERATED! @Kunst – "Wither Awake" first off, SLAY title. this is still a technical knockout like your first song – you’re a really good writer, as i’m sure you already know, in terms of meter and metaphor and stringing language together – but the rhymes feel much more forced this week. they kind of take me out of the song and it doesn’t sum to as much of a magical whole because some of the lines i feel are expected in terms of rhyme. things like “call me on the phone line” feel very stilted just to meet the rhyme and i know you can do better than that.mp3. “the skies are hollow”? what does that mean? the cherry wine line feels very lana (even tho it’s a hozier line), which wig, ahh my ****ing fave. i love the rhyme pairing of silence/violence so glad to see that here. overall this feels as technically well put-together in terms of your last song but it doesn’t carry the emotional resonance of the first song because some of the lines feel predictable. favorite part: “we hang up and then the silence / turns to such soft violence” @conatus – "Unforget" the chorus of this one confuses me — i feel like you’re talking about forgetting instead of unforgetting. if you unforgot (i.e., remembered) everything, wouldn’t you have everything left instead of nothing? that part lost me. i can’t read suddenly, i don’t know. aside from that, “Unforget” has less forced rhymes than your last charting song, which is a wig, but there are still a few — “alleyways” and “displays” felt really inorganic to me, for one. the second verse is a wig and a half, aside from the penultimate line, which felt like it could have been phrased better. also the kingdom and crown metaphor in the first chorus felt stale — i think you can do better. favorite part: “and all the clasps that came undone / before the breaking begun” @beatinglikeadrum – "Purple Devotion" okay, this concept stole my wig. most of the lines are really well-written, with interesting ideas and great images. that being said, i felt some moments where you could’ve done a better job escaping cliché — the “just you and me” in the chorus, for example, which felt like an easy line. the song as a whole was giving me “the yellow wallpaper” teas, which, if you haven’t read it/heard of it, is an excellent feminist short story by charlotte perkins gilman. the verses in particular are my favorite parts; the images feel the best there. the chorus is a bit simpler which isn’t bad, but it seems weaker compared to the really strong verses. favorite part: “they will always be part of me, the sign of better times” @Tsareena – "Radium Girl" six verses girl serving father john misty eleven-minute song teas! the chorus kind of serves with that slant internal rhyme i see u!! okay, i really needed the explanation to figure out how the song fit any sort of flower but i’m glad for a non-obvious connection (all the songs i tried to write this week were very flower-y). at first i thought this would be about the actual radium girls, and i’m feeling a reference to that. i also hope it’s a metaphor because i hope no one in 2018 is dumb enough to put literal radium in themselves. anti-wig. it’s overall a competently-written song, but it plays it kind of safe. some of the rhymes are super forced (place/face, and know/glow/no-show, which, though i loved the internal rhyming, felt like a rhymezone convolution). the simile at the end of verse 3 doesn’t really work for me either; i don’t know if i’d call kindling “tired.” favorite part: “she was the girl that glowed forever / winter to summer like no other.” feels beach house-y to me? @UFO – "Rings of Saturn" first off, i LOVE the way the end of the opening hook rhymes with the next line of the verse. that’s engaging as **** and i’d be wigless if i heard a song do that on the radio. ugh, this is beautiful. help, my wig has fallen and can’t get up. the “scattered / shattered” rhyme feels a bit forced, and “core / before,” which isn’t usually a problem for you, king. this song really serves concept AND execution, which i love. the “mindless movies” line is the one that stole my wig from me i think. i love the half-rhyme of “eternity” and “gravity.” i like that the verses are similar/reference each other but aren’t identical — there’s an evolution. (also, which flower did you do, hoe?) the bridge is cute too but the verses outsold i think. favorite part: “and all of my dreams were mindless movies” @Body Talk⠀ – "Break Me in Half" uuuugh. each verse and pre-chorus has a really solid rhyme (you/truth, cowardice/conflict, cheeks/stupidity) and a rhyme that feels pretty forced (fight/right, us/must, lips/bliss, the first one in particular). on the other hand the cowardice/conflict rhyme is one of my favorite things i’ve seen in this round so far, so wig @ that. i feel like i should dislike the “muse/lose” rhyme, but it works, so i’ll let it slide. this feels like an improvement over last week in the sense that meter is starting to emerge — there aren’t any lines that are like twenty syllables long; the verses are fitting for the most part into some sort of pattern. wig @ improvement. also the “quit dragging me” in the bridge is serving halsey “please don’t be mean to me!” teas. favorite part: the shawn mendes power-bottom title; “love either ends in contempt or agony” @Kylie Jenner – "Hatchet" okay this is so good??? the first verse is totally the best thing i’ve read from you. wig off. repetition can sometimes be deleterious but in the chorus with the “forgive”s it’s effective at adding emotion. however in the bridge using “state” in the same line feels weird. the beginning of the song didn’t feel like a rap verse would be appropriate when i read it but after finishing the verse i can see it coming together. it feels kind of nicki to me, something “bed of lies”-y in terms of being a ballad with some rap on it. there are some forced rhymes tho — “throne / bone,” “hurt/dirt,” “sad/had,” “throne/bone” (verse 2 is particularly vulnerable, it seems). favorite part: “we played, we kissed, i threw caution to the wind / zephyr curved nature and you paid for his sins” @PoKiTaurus – "You" the emotion in this song really comes through, even if some of the lines are lackluster. i love the entire chorus, because it’s very moving and written well. the first verse and the bridge feel overdone, though—they feel like you’re trying too hard to make them rhyme and the lines aren’t very natural. the “bastard” who can “burn in hell” feels too informal, and the last two lines of the bridge feel like you said them better in the chorus. the second verse is better in terms of feeling more natural. favorite part: “everyday i will carry / both our souls“ :’) Edited May 6, 2018 by ultraviolence.xx
