Are they really that strict with what songs get the most plays on their station And of course it's the biggest station doing this

I wonder if money is the biggest issue for radio in the recent years, and that's being translated in such an awful algorithm for radio programming. It just doesn't make sense, and the delay for turnover is just ridiculous and has zero sense, it's not based on any metric of consumption, they just play the same stupid songs, despite been known as "tiring" songs (callouts) and not exactly smashing on other metric.

 

Songs like BF, KMM, Up and Goosebumps should all be comfortable sitting inside Top 10, yet they decide to slowly pick up the songs because they took too much damn time on decide if to drop a song. It's such an awful stagnant system, like you don't have to make a song to free-fall when you understand it's been enough, you could progressively decrease its plays. 

 

Anyways, radio is still nowadays a big method to consume music, but currents based formats are the pits, especially Pop radio, which is out of place.

@Ger-55 I think a lot of teams are just not caring about radio performance in 2021. Good Days, Streets, Déjà Vu, Up, Call Me By Your Name etc. are all hits on streaming/sales yet all had/have terrible airplay numbers. I also think it’s a money thing during the pandemic because so much revenue has been lost from lack of touring. So only big names/successful teams are doing well at radio with unlimited funds.

"Up" is a big hit on both Urban and Rhyhtmic formats, definetely deserved way more Pop Airplay, but treatment wasn't that bad compared to the others. But yeah, I agree with your idea.
