Not only is it unfair to Janet, but it gives the perfect opportunity to revisit nipplegate and every other wrong-doing of his career. It’s the one thing he could do that would shine a spotlight on negativity. But he and his team were arrogant enough to think he was so beloved that no one would care about Janet, even including Rock Your Body in his setlist. The fact that he didn’t combat the performance with great music and a great show only makes the situation worse. The other issue is that a whole generation of kids has grown up without the huge, impactful JT that most of us remember. They don’t even know his digital shorts/comedy stuff. The long break between FS/LS and 20/20 guaranteed that they aren’t endeared towards him whatsoever. If you look online now, his biggest fans are definitely on the older side, even middle-ages. It’s really interesting and kinda sad. I drag him all the time but his legacy is so tarnished despite FS/LS being such an incredible era. This is a perfect post. A shame his dumbass didn’t have someone with sense like you on his team

I think you can have a song that's a big commercial success but still leads you the wrong way from a branding perspective. Pretty much. Quote Dad-pop consists of releasing a song called “Filthy” that isn’t really filthy, mostly just mediocre. Dad-pop is lyrics like: “I’ll be the wood when you need heat/I’ll be the generator, turn me on when you need electricity.” Dad-pop is releasing a song on the “Trolls” soundtrack.

Her songs were failing to crossover, and it became her least selling album ever. But that's when critics started really taking notice of her albums as a whole. She really went up in critical acclaim from there. This is one of those hindsight situations where the 4 "flop" was overstated. Even the retro streams for that album is pretty impressive. This is a straight ARTPOP. His momentum had been wore off awhile ago, the singles were not up to par, the album was weakly reviewed, the publications were against the artist, and the artist was also annoying the public to an extent (the Prince thing has pissed off many). 4 was simply a decline. Similar to 20/20 Part 2 maybe. Singles didn’t do well even though the artist still was pretty liked at that point and the album sold decently.
Cap10Planet Posted February 7, 2018 Posted February 7, 2018 ARTPOP is indeed the more apt comparison.

Otter Posted February 7, 2018 Posted February 7, 2018 Mess, he should have surprise dropped the album. Filthy, Supplies and MOTW killed his momentum and even the rollout was a mess with him acting like he was gonna release a country album and everyone dragging him for it and then the country fans dragging him when they heard filthy. I feel like theres still worthy singles/promo material. Waves sounds like a streaming hit to me. -Waves (pop/rhymic) -Breeze of the Pond (pop/rhymic) -Montanna (pop/rhymic) -Higher Higher (adult contemporary) -Hard Stuff (country) -Living off the Land (cross over)

I think it's a little bit worse than the overall ARTPOP situation honestly. Some of the stuff during ARTPOP (aka still recovering from the hip surgery, the entire Troy fiasco & depression) were beyond Gaga's control, and Applause and DWUW were relatively well received by the GP. MOTW feels like a much less extreme version of what happened to Xtina with Bionic, especially with how self-inflicted (and how un-self-aware) it seems
LoveLiveMusic Posted February 7, 2018 Posted February 7, 2018 Damn. His lead over Migos, and also their pure sales. What’s coming out next week?

The whole 'concept album' that majorly sucked and underperformed thing kinda makes me see the comparison a lot.

Forgot to put this in the post, but Filthy is as polarizing a lead single as Not Myself Tonight. Of course, Say Something might be able to salvage the era, which You Lost Me was unable to do
