botnus Posted January 5, 2018 Posted January 5, 2018 (edited) Hi guys. I am botnus and this is my best of 2017 thread. I am a longtime lurker so i don’t doubt that i am practically unknown here but that’s fine. A little introduction: i have a best friend with the same passion and love in music and we’re both actively discussing and sharing music that we listen to all the time. Every year we make an ‘award’ (so to speak) of our favorite music and share it to each other. 2017 was no different, i made simple collages on my phone, of music that i like in several different categories and i shared it with my friend. It was all in good spirits and we had fun about it. So I have these collages and lists on my phone and i figured if I had other means to share them. Coincidentally, i just read about this new sub forum and i figured sure, why not participate. It would not generate lots of viewers but that’s fine. I am having fun making this thread ? Anyway, my ‘Best of 2017’ list consists of 16 categories, namely: 1. Best Female Albums 2. Best Female Songs 3. Best Male Albums 4. Best Male Songs 5. Best Indie/Rock/Alternative Albums 6. Best Indie/Rock/Alternative Songs 7. Best Heavy Metal Albums 8. Best Heavy Metal Songs 9. Honorable mentions: Inspirational/relatable songs 10. Honorable mentions: Sexy Sexy Songs 11. Honorable mentions: Catchy songs 12. Best Music Videos 13. Best Album Covers 14. Best Lyrics 15. Albums of The Year 16. Songs of The Year As you may notice, i use plurals. This means i don’t rank the entries for each category. I just list them randomly. Each category will have seven entries (from 2017, but 17 entries per category would make this list longer than it needs to be and i had a hard time with 7 entries already) and there will be accompanying message/explanation for each entry. I’ll try to finish them before the 14th. I hope you enjoy. Thanks for coming/reading. I wish you all a great day! edit: i just posted the first two categories with pictures but the pics didn’t show up after posted them. What’s up with that? I hosted them on imgur and I am on mobile, if that helps.. Edited January 5, 2018 by botnus
botnus Posted January 5, 2018 Author Posted January 5, 2018 Let’s start with these two familiar categories (probably categories with the most descriptions in my entire list): Best Female Albums and Best Female Songs As a huge fan of female pop artists, the year of 2017 has been a rollercoaster ride. So many dissapointments, and at the same time, pleasant surprises. I was not ready when Lana released her most upbeat record yet, her cutesy strut and cheeky smile on Love’s music video was a cute tease of how different this album would be from her previous ones. And boy did she not dissapoint. On another note, Pop 2 by Charli XCX was the last album in this category that i listened to in 2017. Was not expecting much, Number 1 Angel did not impress me, so i imagine my surprise when i listened to I Got It and Femmebot and found myself swaying my hips left and right. She knocked it out of the park this time. The same goes for Lorde. When Green Light was released, i was not convinced. And then Liability happened. When the music stopped and she sang “the truth is, i am a toy that people enjoy till all of the tricks don’t work anymore..” I was sold. Kelela’s Take Me Apart and Jessie Ware’s Glasshouse, as expected, were great. I have been a fan of Kelela since Hallucinogen EP. All The Way Down used to be the only song i listened to for the whole week. While Jessie Ware’s Keep On Lying made my friends bobbing their heads in the car along with the beats. So many highlights and catchy choruses in both of their new albums. They stick to their craft, and it paid off. Solid albums. K. Michelle was another unexpected entry. I only knew her from Love and Hip Hop franchise. I knew she had a great powerful voice, but never really bothered to check her music. And now i felt dumb for not checking her earlier. Alert is a good opener (kinda, it’s the second track) in Kimberly, didn’t know she could rap. The real gems comes after, when God Love Sex & Drugs and Make This Song Cry come on. She has great rhythm and her melody is great. She sings with power but not too over the top. The rest of the album flows very well, i enjoyed it thoroughly and looking forward to her future records And then there’s Jlin. Now, i listened to Black Origami not knowing who Jlin was. I just knew that the Album was highly praised. So i gave it a shot. Holy moly, that first track (Black Origami) had me on the floor gyrating and stuff. It grabbed my attention and made me stop doing what i was doing and started to really listen. The album hit me with its assertive drumrolls relentlessly, and i liked it. The album lacks melody, but she made it up with Her creativity in layering her rhythm with unique sounds and clean production. She made a new fan with this record
botnus Posted January 5, 2018 Author Posted January 5, 2018 So many good albums, some i really like due to their cohesiveness, nothing really stands out but they’re great packages as a whole, and then there are songs that stand out from their respective records (whether they’re good or not) that i can’t help but to single them out. Delicate takes awhile to sink in, but when it does, it refuses to budge. It’s no surprise that Taylor is an amazing songwriter. She makes great melodies that’s so relatable and infectious to our ears. Delicate is a masterpiece that takes its time to get used to, and now it ends up to be my third overall favorite song from her, just below All Too Well and Enchanted. Slow build seems to be the norm for this category, seeing Enchante, Selfish Love and Love were also taking time to find their place in this list. All mid-tempo, All of then are great in their own way. Two songs this year were released under my radar and ended up being love at first listen: Boys and Player Hater, the first one was just so simple and so effective (especially with that music video), and the second one was a great reintroduction to miss Porcelain Black (and i gotta admit, i tend to enjoy wordy songs). Liability was a much needed revelation of how great of a songwriter Lorde is to me. The song is relatable, reminds me of Bowie and yet it’s still very much Lorde. Probably my all time favorite song from her
