Kworb Posted January 2, 2018 Author Posted January 2, 2018 25. Kesha - Rainbow Kesha made a triumphant return in 2017 with a new direction and a solid album. While 'Rainbow' is not on the level of 'Warrior', "Spaceship" might be her best song to date. 24. Loreen - Ride It seems like Swedish singer Loreen attempted for years to release her sophomore album. After countless failed (but amazing) singles, she gave up on pop music altogether and released the moody 'Ride'. It would've been better if it included her best songs "I'm In It With You" and "Under Ytan", but it's still very nice. 23. WagakkiBand - Shikisai I really got into WagakkiBand in 2016 because of their phenomenal single "Strong Fate". The rest of the new album is good too, but it lacks variety and standout tracks. 22. Levante - Nel Caos Di Stanze Stupefacenti Italian singer-songwriter Levante broke through in the mainstream with this excellent pop rock album. 21. Cesare Cremonini - Possibili Scenari Another Italian, Cesare Cremonini has been a hitmaker for quite some time. 'Possibili Scenari' on the other hand is more of an experimental concept album that is practically devoid of pop. I like it a lot. 20. cupcakKe - Queen Elizabitch Who'd have thought the "Deepthroat" star would carve a decent career for herself? She's so talented and deserves all of her success. This is another great album. 19. Tori Amos - Native Invader It's been a while since she peaked with the incredible 'Abnormally Attracted to Sin', but she continues to release beautiful music. 'Native Invader' was not that easy to get into but it also doesn't get old. 18. Chihiro Onitsuka - Syndrome No one can sing quite like Chihiro Onitsuka. I'm glad she is healthy again and has regained control over her unique instrument. 17. Tarja - From Spirits And Ghosts It's crazy to realize that Tarja's solo career is now almost twice as long as her Nightwish career. She is still going strong, as this dark Christmas album was another surprising gem. I'm still listening to it! 16. Lorde - Melodrama I was not a fan of Lorde's debut album 'Pure Heroine', and even "Green Light" took a while to grow on me. But the full 'Melodrama' is quite the experience. It deserved to do much better commercially. Let's hope she takes home the Grammy to make up for it. 15. Willow - The 1st I still remember when we were all slayed by "Whip My Hair" and imagined her becoming a global pop princess and successor to Rihanna. She is instead carving her own path with her experimental music, and I am loving it. 14. Suiyoubi no Campanella - Superman Suiyoubi no Campanella was probably my favorite act of 2016, and in that sense 'Superman' was a bit of a disappointment, as they were becoming more pop and less weird. Fortunately the later single "Melos", not on this album, restored my faith in them. 13. lecca - High Street Japanese pop reggae singer Lecca always delivers quality. Though her output can get a little samey, I had her 12th studio album 'High Street' on rotation for most of the year. Highlights are "Looking For U" and "Garbage". 12. Perfume Genius - No Shape I tried a few times to get into Perfume Genius, but other than a few songs, his music just wasn't doing it for me. That finally changed in 2017. 'No Shape' is fantastic from start to finish. Easily his best album yet. 11. Katy Perry - Witness The most discussed underperformance of the year, it really wasn't as disastrous as people make it out to be. Especially because the album itself is so good. Pop perfection.

Kworb Posted January 3, 2018 Author Posted January 3, 2018 10. Shakira - El Dorado Shakira proved her longevity by releasing her best album since 'Fijación Oral, Vol. 1'. Despite hopping on current trends, a necessary move to stay relevant in the mainstream, her unique sound and style are still present. The songs with Maluma are particularly good, as well as the ballads "Toneladas" and "Nada". 9. Sam Smith - The Thrill Of It All For some reason I thought Sam's sophomore effort would be more daring and sonically eclectic. Instead he went in an even more adult contemporary direction, fully embracing his role as the "male Adele". This ended up not being a bad thing, as 'The Thrill Of It All' is nothing short of fantastic. He sounds better than ever and the melodies are even stronger than on his debut. Even the bonus tracks are great. If only the duds "One Last Song" and "Baby, You Make Me Crazy" weren't there. 8. alan - Thought In A Decade Tibetan singer Alan Dawa Dolma had a great year, releasing various great songs, culminating in the release of her 5th Chinese studio album (7th overall). This might just be her best album since she left J-Pop behind. Her voice is still out of this world. 7. Residente - Residente Puerto Rican rapper Residente, one third of Calle 13, released his debut solo album, an enterprising record that feels like it was made for me. Every song sounds like it comes from a different part of the world. Mongolian throat singing, traditional Chinese instruments, Ghanaian chanting, guest artists who bring their own language and culture, 'Residente' is a stunning amalgamation of the beautiful music this world has to offer. 6. Pabllo Vittar - Vai Passar Mal Brazilian genderqueer drag queen Pabllo Vittar became an unlikely superstar in 2017, with her hits "K.O." and "Corpo Sensual" dominating YouTube and Spotify. Beyond those fantastic songs there is an entire album just as strong. While it's on the short side, every song hits hard, whether it's the production or her amazing vocals. The emotional ballad "Indestrutível" is a highlight.

Kworb Posted January 5, 2018 Author Posted January 5, 2018 5. Lana Del Rey - Lust For Life There are many things remarkable about Lana Del Rey, but the consistent quality of her work is perhaps the most significant one. 'Lust For Life' is her most positive album yet, but her unique and gorgeous style remains the same. The most impressive thing about this record is the lack of weak songs, especially when you consider its length, and the short time she takes between albums. 4. Giusy Ferreri - Girotondo It's been almost ten years since Giusy competed on Italian X-Factor, finishing second but becoming an overnight superstar after Tiziano wrote and produced most of her debut album 'Gaetana'. I've been a fan ever since, and supported her through all her flops. In 2015 she returned to the mainstream by featuring on Baby K's massive hit "Roma-Bangkok", and she's been riding that wave ever since. 'Girotondo' is her best album since her debut. It starts with one catchy song after another, before taking a serious turn and delivering fantastic songs like the title track, "La Gigantessa" and "Immaginimi". 3. Miley Cyrus - Younger Now This is the third time that Miley released the year's best album from the Anglosphere (after 'Bangerz' and 'Dead Petz'), so it's safe to say that she is currently the best thing the English-speaking world has to offer. While most of us were expecting Miley to fully return to pop, especially after lead single "Malibu", the album is instead not that different from the eclectic side project that preceded it. Despite the lack of hits, the songs here all have a timeless quality, and listening to them over and over is a very rewarding experience. Even the title track, a song I initially disliked, is excellent in the context of the album. Miley is an incredible artist. 2. Pablo Alborán - Prometo The Spanish king of pop hasn't wavered much from the style he debuted with, instead refining it with each album. 'Prometo' also doesn't deliver the new direction that I was hoping for, but the songs here are so great that it really doesn't matter. When you have such a beautiful voice there's really no need to ever reinvent yourself. It's enough to keep writing these incredible melodies. Even the few uptempo songs are better than any he has done in the past. He's still only 28 years old, but well on his way to becoming a legend, if he isn't already there. 1. Ai Otsuka - Love Honey Top honors this year go to Ai Otsuka, who had to settle for second place two years ago with 'Love Tricky'. This veteran J-Pop queen is officially back to her best after she took a few years off to raise her daughter. 'Love Honey' contains everything that makes Ai such a fascinating artist. Her unique vocals are perfect for every genre, and I love that she's back to a more eclectic approach after the homogeneity of her previous album. The crown jewel is the song "Sakura Harahara", an absolutely stunning production that takes you on a magical journey and never gets old.
warriorsoul Posted January 11, 2018 Posted January 11, 2018 LOVE HONEY I didn't love it as much as LOVE TRICKY but it is a great album! Glad to see Chihiro make the list! "syndrome" is a beautiful album! Also SUPERMAN Curious about Alan's Chinese work, I never listened to it so I might check it out! I miss her jpop work Haven't been following lecca for the last couple years because her albums got very samey to me but still love her voice!
