  13. Almost as soon as the 2020s began, the world faced an unprecedented state of uncertainty. In times like these music, as with culture, often looks inward, taking a moment to contemplate. Each of these women (and female fronted band Wolf Alice) spent the last decade building careers on embracing the good, the bad, and the dark. As a new decade turned, they brought their characteristic sense of self-understanding with them. With all of these albums recorded and released during the height of the pandemic, there is a notable undercurrent of pain and introspection. The results are six intriguing and thoughtful albums, and it is our job to rate them. Each of the albums included received notoriety in either 2020 or 2021. Click below to find out more. The Songs: The Rules: Rate each song between 1-10, using decimals as necessary. You can assign three of your favourite songs a score of 11. Please ensure you give each album a fair chance and proper listen. Please PM me (or feel free to use Discord) your rates! Tentative deadline is October 1st, 2022. Extension deadline: October 9th, 2022

  16. Welcome to the Ultimate 90s Female Pop Rate! I've compiled a list of around 115 songs that encompass the 1990s decade. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to include every hit but I hope you're at least 90% happy with the list (if there's a hit you really think I should include let me know and I'll do my best). RULES Rate every single song from 1-10. Decimals are fine but only to 1 decimal place (8.4 is fine, but 8.32 or 8.91012 is not). You may give TEN songs a score of 11 – however, they each have to go to a different female (this means if you rated Mariah's “Vision of Love” an 11, you can’t rate any of her other hits with an 11) PLEASE USE THE PREPARED TABLE FORMAT BELOW TO SEND IN YOUR SCORES. You must use the correct format (see below). PM your scores to me – MUST copy and paste the table format below so that it’s easier for me to input it in the master spreadsheet (if you want to do this in a Google Doc and just send the link to me as well, that is totally okay) Comments are optional – if you’re writing comments, please PM them to me separately. As far as quality standards go, I don't want to see all 10s or 1s for the same artist, if it seems like you're sabotaging I won't count your ballot PLAYLISTS - Will begin this soon! 18. In a decade dominated by European dance, house, pop, and hip-hop music, which are still booming in popularity till this day, R&B more than held its own with a diverse array of projects from a healthy mix of established stars, talented newcomers and indie artists. The first two years of the teens weren’t terrible, they were the last of our traditional days with the genre. From 2012 and on we experienced a generation of young artists experimenting with new sounds, saw a period where “vibes” replaced pitch-perfect vocals, rappers started singing, singers started rapping, veterans made big comebacks, funk music dominated and by 2019 artists revisited the roots of soul, putting a modern spin on past winning formulas. 2012-2019 was a strange, weird time for R&B, but great music emerged, and we are here to rate songs that represent the transition period. Songs put together in this rate were mainly pulled from the Village Voice Pazz & Jop music critics poll (and it’s rip-off on facebook) which includes over 1,000 members—music writers, business execs, and artists themselves that rank the songs or albums of the year. Nonetheless you will get a great mix and representation of contemporary and alternative R&B. Ratings & Rules: We will be listening to and rating 67 songs in total. For those special songs you should assign one 10.25, one 10.5, one 10.75 & one 11. Everything else should rate on a scale of 1-10. Up to two decimal points are allowed. Some artists have more songs than others so please be mindful not to sabotage or frontload. 19. In this rate, we will be scoring six albums released in 2019. After a couple of failed attempts at This Was 2019 rates, I thought it was time to try again. This time I have selected 6 acclaimed albums all by female artists released in the year that have yet to be rated by ATRL. I think this group of albums summarises the year in music and covers the genres that were popular during the year pretty well. Solange released her fourth studio album When I Get Home on 1st March 2019. The album is an experimental blend of “cosmic” jazz, hip hop and R&B, with influences of psychedelic soul and drum and bass in some parts. Compared to her previous project, Solange noted that When I Get Home focusses more on what she had to “feel”, as opposed to what she had to “say”. The album received universal acclaim, with critics praising it’s uplifting lyrics and adventurous production. Pitchfork placed it at number 5 on their best album’s of 2019 list, calling it “unhurried, ambient and exploratory”. In August 2019, Lana Del Rey released her highly anticipated sixth studio album Norman ******* Rockwell! nearly two years after it's initial announcement. The album’s sound is a mixture of soft rock and psychedelic pop with influences of folk and trip hop. On release, the album was met with widespread critical acclaim and is now often considered her best album. Pitchfork stated that the album “establishes Lana as one of America’s greatest living songwriters” while NME said the album was “nothing short of stunning” in a 5-star review it gave. Former member of American synth-pop band Chairlift, Caroline Polachek, released her third solo studio album (being the first under her real name) on 18th October 2019, Pang. The album is often described as ethereal and draws influences from ambient, new age and trip hop genres. Pang was met with critical acclaim and made many year-end lists with Dazed placing it at number 1 on their best albums of 2019 list. Many critics commended Polachek’s unique vocal performances throughout the record, with Clash describing them as “staggering” and “heavenly”. One of the many breakout stars of 2019 was Doja Cat. She released her second studio album Hot Pink in early November 2019 to huge success. The album spawned many smash hits including “Say So” and “Streets”, the latter peaking in early 2021. Hot Pink is a hip hop album with elements of disco, emo rap and electropop. In a review for Consequence of Sound, the album was said to “serve as a testament to Doja’s skill set” noting that her “singing, rapping and producing shine effortlessly on the record". Rolling Stone’s Kyle Rice included Hot Pink at number 7 on his list of the best albums of 2019, while multiple other publications cited it as one of the best hip hop albums of the year. The final album included in the rate is FKA twigs’ second full length project, MAGDALENE. On the record, twigs crafts electronic art pop, fusing it with “lurid” modern dance and “carnal” soul music. The adventurous, experimental nature of the album is reminiscent of artists such as Kate Bush and Björk. The album garnered widespread critical acclaim with multiple publications naming it the best album of the year. Pitchfork scored the album a 9.4, commending it’s “limitlessly innovative songwriting and production” and stating that it’s in a “breathtaking class of its own”. The final album we will be rating is Tinashe’s Songs For You. It is her fourth studio album but is the first released under her own, independent record label. Whilst the main genre of the record is R&B, it contains a lot of pop influences. On release, the album was met with critical acclaim as many critics noted Tinashe’s newly found “freedom” after leaving her previous label. A critic from MTV describes Songs For You as “Tinashe taking full creative control over her work” with the result being “music that comes straight from the soul”. Instructions - Listen to all 76 songs included in the rate. Please don’t skip any songs. The playlist containing all the songs in the rate is below. There is also a copy/paste friendly song list below that. Give each song a score between 1 and 10 based on how much you like the song. You may give out three 11s and three 0s for songs you especially love or dislike. You do not have to use all/any of your 11s or 0s. Decimal points are allowed up to two decimal places (e.g. 5.5 and 8.39 are allowed but scores such as 3.27694 and 6.185 are not allowed). Feel free to write comments for the songs if you wish. Once you have rated each song, send your ballot to me via DM. DUE DATE: 5th September 2022 Song List - Participants - Results -
  20. The Queen of Pop recently turned 64 (happy birthday, Madonna!), which got me thinking that it would be the perfect time for a March Madness-style tournament to celebrate her incomporable career. Over the next few weeks, we'll whittle down a bracket of 64 favorites to determine Her Madgesty's greatest single. But I need your help before we can begin! Please nominate your list of Madonna's ten best singles in the thread below. These ballots will be used to determine the final list of competitors and help decide their tournament seeds. If you need a reminder of what she's released, you can refresh yourself here. Now get into the groove, because I will unveil the draw later this week. PARTICIPANTS

  22. Introduction: Hello guys and welcome to the megarate of Nicki Minaj's discography. The queen of rap is gearing up to release her highly anticipated fifth studio album this year (hopefully) and I think this game will be a fun way to keep the excitement going. Nicki's music catalogue is quite large, especially the amount of features she has. I don't want to give you 300+ songs to rate all at once, this is suppose to be fun, not a chore. For this rate I decided not to include any features. Just Nicki's mixtapes, albums and solo singles and freestyles such as beloved Boss Ass ***** and Black Barbies. If there is enough demand, I will consider doing another rate after this one that would include only featured verses. I provided the list of songs and divided them by sections down below. Unreleased music is NOT included. Rules: Rate only songs that are on the list. Rate each song from 1 to 10. You can give the same rate to multiple songs but try not to get carried away. It would be great if you try to be diverse with your votes. 11's and 0's (if any) are allowed but only one per section. Decimals are allowed but only up to one decimal place (7.5 is okay 8.30214 is absolutely not) Send your votes to me via private message. Don't post them here. If you have any additional comments about a song or an album feel free to send them to me as well. I may share them with everybody while revealing the results. Song List: I hope everybody will have a great time rediscovering Nicki's music. Due date is August 26th for now. This is a subject to change so don't worry about it too much. If you will need extra time I will change it. Have fun! RESULTS: Participants: People who already voted:

    This Was 2021 | WINNER!

Can you remember the inkling of hope you felt as 2021 dawned? Amid the worst surge yet of the coronavirus pandemic, there seemed to be a light at the end of the tunnel as the government launched its mass vaccination campaign. The sense that things could finally be getting better was affirmed when, all of a week into the new year, Jazmine Sullivan dropped Heaux Tales, the woman once held aloft as R&B’s next great hope emerging from half a decade in the wilderness with the confirmation of her genius that we had all been waiting for. Of course, things would rapidly go south – an insurrection at the Capitol when we had barely gotten over our New Year’s Eve hangovers was followed by the resumption of mass shootings, a deadly concert hosted by one of music’s biggest names and the slow-dawning realization that this virus was just going to keep coming back again. But the music never stopped being great! January wasn’t even over when we had already found the breakout star of the year, Olivia Rodrigo, a pop supernova who exploded onto the scene with the fully-formed vision of her instantly iconic debut album, Sour. Billie Eilish returned in the summer with Happier Than Ever, deftly avoiding the sophomore slump with a stunner that soared past the artistic heights – if not the commercial success – of her Grammy-sweeping debut. And the indie breakthroughs of Japanese Breakfast’s Jubilee and Little Simz’s Sometimes I Might Be Introvert earned them both well-deserved Best New Artist celebrations, albeit several albums into their careers. Then, as we entered another socially-distanced holiday season, Adele returned at last to wipe away (or perhaps indulge) our blues with the most-anticipated release in years: her divorce album, 30, a blockbuster that also took her lauded career to new creative triumph. Now things turn over to you, the good voters of ATRL. Which of 2021’s biggest and best albums was your favorite? You can help decide the winner by ranking each of these 85 songs on a scale of 1-10 and then sending me your ballot by Sunday, July 3. Please listen to everything again at least once before submitting. I want honest assessments, not scores based on your memory or biases. Up to two decimal points are allowed. Feel free to include commentary if you are so moved. And no trolling or your vote will be tossed. Happy listening! Results Participants
