Selena Gomez | STIGMA

https://i.ibb.co/8r2kLHd/stigma-album-cover.jpg

1. Stigma

On the album's opening title track over a bubbling hypnotic bass line, Gomez

swears "I know I have it in me / God, please make it f**king clear to me / And

for saying that I'm going to hell". While this one starts light as can be with soft

whisper a cappella, in the final minute we enter a world of chaos with heavy

layered vocals, electric guitar and clashing synths.

Written by Selena Gomez | Produced by The Futuristics | 4:06 | E

2. Treat You Right

"I'm so sorry for the lonely nights / And even feel pity for the pointless fights / I

know you deserve it so I'mma treat you right" Selena sings on this emotional

self-confessional mid-tempo. Backed by snaps and light horns, "Treat You

Right" is one of the more mainstream songs on the album and a proper

co-lead single.

Written by Selena Gomez, Julia Michaels, Justin Tranter & Ian Kirkpatrick |

Produced by Ian Kirkpatrick | 3:13

3. Exercising Demons

Featuring sounds of screaming-esque monsters and prayers in different

languages, Selena chronically lists the demons she has to conquer in order to

love herself or anyone else. It is the only song on the album to not feature a

repeating chorus and partial non-English lyrics.

Written by Selena Gomez, Max Martin & Ilya Salmanzadeh | Produced by

Max Matin & ILYA | 3:40

4. Champagne Lights featuring Camila Cabello

A Rita Ora reject, "Champagne Lights" is one of STIGMA's more commercial

songs packed with a more traditional chord progression and more bubblegum-y

feeling. Halfway through, Camila Cabello makes an appearance with a forty-

five second verse referencing several early 2000s pop hits.

Written by Rita Ora, Mattias Larsson, Robin Fredriksson & Selena Gomez |

Produced by Mattman & Robin | 2:57

5. #LitAsShit

The only party song on the album, this bop features a drop similar to the

left-and-right channel sounds in Ariana Grande's "Sweetener". Selena, along

with a group of all female backup vocalists, declares "Let's get lit as s**t / Just

blow the roof off dis motherf**ker".

Written by Selena Gomez, Benjamin Levin, Julia Michels & Justin Tranter |

Produced by Ian Kirkpatrick | 3:22 | E

6. High Voltage

STIGMA's only song to not feature a lyric written by Gomez feels very electric

(literally) packed with a sparkling bass and zooming rocket boots sounds

throughout. "I should warn you / I am shock proof / But you're not / And that's

why you're hot / Ready or not, here I come / High voltage and a moon sung sun".

Written by Pharrell Williams | Produced by Pharrell Williams | 3:16 | E

7. On Fire

"I was the only one to ever know who to never love / And I was the only one to

ever think no one needed to go above" a weakened Selena tells us who's reality

came far too late "from a life on fire".

Written by Selena Gomez | Produced by Rock Mafia | 3:52

8. Easy

"I like to make things so hard until they're easy / That way I can blame anyone

but myself" Gomez sings on this straight-to-the-heart ballad. Simple and straight

to the point, "Easy"'s final chorus features some stunning vocals with a sharp

and shallow octave range.

Written by Selena Gomez | Produced by Selena Gomez | 4:29

9. Pardon My Heart featuring The Weeknd

Detailing a lost relationship with her real life ex-partner, Selena sings with Abel

back and forth over a set of piano, strings and 808s: "Photographs of the

kissing / Make us realize what we're missing / A life where no one else

is involved / And to feel alone, I don't gotta turn to alcohol".

Written by Selena Gomez & Abel "The Weeknd" Tesfaye | Produced by

Ian Kirkpatrick | Vocals production by Max Martin | 4:04

10. Rare

A kiss off anthem to a soon-to-be ex, Selena knows she's worth more than the

"love" she receives from her current boyfriend,: "It feels like you don't care /

Why don't you recognize I'm so rare?". Backed by light and airy guitar and

tropical pop influences, this is a highlight of her third solo record.

Written by Selena Gomez, Brett "Leland" McLaughlin & Nick Monson |

Produced by Ian Kirkpatrick | 3:39

11. Caught Up

A more urban song, and a little similar to Taylor Swift's "Bad Blood" remix

with Kendrick Lamar, here is an edgier side to Miss Gomez than previously

encountered as she coons "I got you caught up in your feelings / Caught up

in my business / That screen is my witness / Put it down and look at me /

I know I should be the only girl you see / All I ask for is a a little attention /

Don't make me blow up your mentions".

Written by Selena Gomez, Max Martin & Shellback | Produced by Max

Martin & Shellback | 3:21 | E

12. Promise

After eleven tracks, it's clear the singer has grown quite a bit and is ready for

the next step(s) in her journey:  "I promise I'll love everyone the same / But first I

got learn how to love myself /  Because this mirror ain't gonna shine on its own /

And this heart ain't gonna beat if it's made of stone". STIGMA ends with a choir

shouting the final track's refrain and clapping over a live band.

Written by Selena Gomez | Produced by Selena Gomez | Additional production

by Frank Dukes | Vocal production by Louis Bell | 3:53

Following a long hiatus, on January 4, 2019, the top of the new year, Selena

finally releases her third solo studio album, entitled STIGMA. After the cover

leaked online through a Twitter fan account, many assumed it was a fan edit

and fake as the link to pre-save the album led to her second album, Revival,

on Brazil's iTunes store. However, this was quickly debunked as Gomez

quietly posted the album's cover and link through her social media at 12:01

AM EST on January 4th. It was the first album released in history to

streaming before being made available for purchase as it was exclusively

on Spotify only for one full week.

STIGMA has only one edition containing twelve tracks with no bonus tracks

in any region. Perhaps what is most shocking about the record's release is

it contains none of the tracks Selena released previously, including top

twenty US Billboard Hot 100 hits "Bad Liar, "Wolves" (with Marshmello), and

"Back to You". Immediately upon STIGMA's release, dual lead singles are

released, "Treat You Right" and "#LitAsShit", which feature accompanying

videos. The former peaks at number fourteen on the Billboard Hot 100 and the

latter at number one, becoming Selena's first chart topper in history.

"Rare", "High Voltage", and "Champagne Lights", featuring Camila

Cabello, are all released as further singles, with same day videos, and go

on to all reach the top forty in the US and find international success as

well peaking in the top twenty in several European countries and

the top fifty in others.

On January 11, one week after its Spotify exclusive release week, STIGMA

becomes available to purchase on all digital music platforms as well as in

physical formats, CD, vinyl, including a limited edition blood-splattered double

LP, and cassette.

Upon its release, Selena is met with universal acclaim as critics describe it as

"pop music like none other", "Gomez brings more fire than all of this decade",

and "Unpredictable and uncanny, she proves the trend-chasing days are gone

and the trend-making days are here". Sonically STIGMA is a alternative pop

influenced album with R&B, dance, urban and soul elements throughout.

During its release week, Selena embarks on a United States based

nationwide mini-tour visiting one city a day, starting with New York, then

Miami, Houston, Chicago, Minneapolis, Las Vegas and finally Los Angeles.

On each stop, she stops in to the local area's most popular radio station and

does a one hour uncanned and commercial free interview, then heads to one

of the city's local small venues and performs a free concert, performing

several songs from STIGMA as well as her older hits and finally hangs out

with fans while having intimate face-to-face moments and interaction.

Starting in October, Gomez embarks on a nine month long world tour, The

STIGMA World Tour. The tour begins in the UK and ends in China, and on

her twenty-eighth birthday in 2020, Selena releases the tour exclusively to

YouTube along with a behind-the-scenes documentary, entitled The Stigma

of a Voice, which is Selena's journey making STIGMA, her most personal

and reflective music. "When they ask me about my life, I say just listen and

you'll know everything. Nobody is perfect and I never will be."

_____________________

The album starts with the sparkly title track 'Gradient' followed by the self-empowerment anthem 'Shine', the album gets a little gritty with 'Cowboy' as Ally repeatedly instructs her man to "Giddy up cowboy" Tracks 4-6 follow the same route until 'Look What I Found' introduces a more singer-songwriter sound. The second half of the album is mostly mid-tempo featuring guests Jackson Maine and Elton John on tracks 8 and 9. The pace is lifted with soothing pop tracks 'Heal Me' and 'The Cure'. The album ends on a positive note with pop-ballad dedicated to her husband 'Always and Forever" is a soft love song where Ally declares "I'm yours and your mine, always and forever."
