The Tortured Poets Department, 2.5 years later. Thoughts?

I kinda felt it was bloated at first but in hindsight, this was Taylor at her deepest lore wise, the main album was actually really tight and good, the Anthology however has so many hits and misses. I get why its not public friendly as a record but I think this album solidified her core audience further as she has aged, its absolutely a fan favorite for a reason. Its a very mature take on her Swiftian way of writing. Her breakup, her more sensual desires, having to tamper her pain in the name of being the showgirl, obsession with her haters, being wronged, all basically heightened versions of her younger ways of writing.

Fortnight is probably my favorite lead single of hers, how sad yet catchy the entire lead melody is, that pulsing bass synth creates the entire song for me. What a wonderfully sad song!

But Daddy I Love Him, Guilty as Sin?, Florida!!!, Down Bad, So Long London, Fortnight, The Prophecy, imgonnagetyouback, So High School are all career highlights!

A drudge. The production is bland and the songs blend into each other to a sleepy degree.

God, an album. And a risk! She was on the biggest tour in history at the height of Taymania and released a 31 track low/midtempo crash out that was pretty unflattering!

This album was a public declaration that she writes exclusively for her core online stans now like a kpop group and we're all still hoping she either declines or gets bored of it so she can make real music again. campfire

Fantastic album. It has some of the best songwriting this decade. It is just penalized by the fact that she put the worst two songs first. In my head the album starts with "My Boy" on the line "Oh here we go again…"

Too long, but great. Though I can understand why casual listeners of hers don't like it

I find it overlong and bloated with weak melodies and overwritten lyrics. It has some highlights here and there, but it doesn't offer anything she has hasn't done before, and done better.

Bloated, too long, dated production.

Some great lyrics but that's it.

When you lack in the vocal department if you also lack in the production and make an album that doesn't end, you end up doing the opposite of what you aspire: you end up being boring.

Also just because you can doesn't mean you should.

Fortnight is a good song, was not a fan of the album as a whole

if only we knew what would come after it

Her most lore rich album, very rewarding as a fan of the artist. The kind of project anyone would feel grateful to have from their fav. I understand it's far too bloated for casual listeners but for me, I wouldn't remove a single song except for Robin. Everything else serves a greater purpose. Career highlights in Fortnight, Guilty as Sin?, loml, Chloe et al., The Prophecy, So Long London, The Black Dog, Fresh Out the Slammer; personal favs in People's Windows, How Did It End?, I Hate It Here, Down Bad, My Boy, So High School, imgonnagetyouback, I Can Fix Him, … god I love this album

Nothing special and is only praised by certain swifties because the title, aesthetic and length are easy to romanticize. Make it 14 songs long and call it down bad and the appeal is gone.

It also reminds me of reputation. Not sonically, but in how polarizing it was upon release between fans vs casuals. The fans ride HARD for it, while everyone else doesn't see the vision. Maybe time will be kind to it the way it has been to reputation, or maybe it will remain a cult classic. To be determined!

Her best album. LOML still makes me cry all those years later. Best album of all time.

I love it, it's really grown to be one of her best albums for me. I don't think it's intended to listen to all 31 songs straight. If you're doing it that way, it's gonna get hard to finish.

The [redacted] [redacted] Department has 0 hooks or good melodies, it's just thesaurus'd rambling over tepid uninspired production for 2+ hours. I guess there's 9-ish songs long tracklist in there somewhere that would make for a passable album, but as it is it blends into one sterile forgettable bore.

Deserved TLOAS lashings.

I love it. It could use some editing on the Anthology but I understand it was a gift for the fans and the more songs the better (but she still should've kept the Kim K songs for herself).

Guilty As Sin, Down Bad, But Daddy I Love Him, Fresh out the Slammer, loml, Broken Heart, The Alchemy, imgonnagetyouback, The Black Dog, So High School, I Look In People's Windows, The Prophecy, The Bolter, The Manuscript are all top tier. Whew I might have to stream it again now jonny5

I love The Prophecy, Cassandra, I Hate It Here, So High School, that Sophia and Marcus song and I only use Clara Bow from standard edition

It's my absolute favorite Taylor album. For the first year it was released I listen to it front to back multiple times a day, without missing a single day -- probably even longer than just a single year, as a daily habit. It is still my go to Taylor album when I listen to her music and the album that showcases her songwriting ability the most. Most of the songs on it rank in my overall top 100 Taylor tracks with a large number of them making my top 50, even. My absolute favorite track in her discography is Chloe or Sam or Sophia or Marcus and The Bolter is also within my top 5 overall tracks of her discography. I love this album so much.
