Why did Lana Del Rey mostly throw away black women under the bus in QFTC?

Featured Replies

In her song "Question for the Culture", she mainly mentioned black women.

"Now that Doja Cat, Ariana, Camila, Cardi B, Kehlani and Nicki Minaj and Beyoncé have had number ones with songs about being sexy, wearing no clothes, f*cking, cheating etc - can I please go back to singing about being embodied, feeling beautiful by being in love even if the relationship is not perfect, or dancing for money - or whatever I want - without being crucified or saying I'm glamorizing abuse??????"

Camila Cabello a latina, and Ariana Grande that was always constatly meme'd for looking of a different race, they were the only 2 women who Lana came from that weren't black.

Well gays and girls what was the reason Lana Del Rey mostly pointed fingers at black women, what was the motive that instinctively make her go towards them?

i know this is a troll thread but it sends me that she worked with ariana on dcma recently before qftc and still believed she's black

Better concept - Name every female artist not mentioned by Lana, who would fit this description, bonus points if the song was #1 heart

I think she was frustrated during quarantine and chose names she saw on Billboard. Most of the letter was directed at figures like Kim Gordon.

It was a terrible timing for posting that during that time, 4 days later it started all the Black Lives Matter movement.

In a certain way, during 2019/2020 there were more Black Girls and Latinas topping the charts like only Billie Eilish (white girl) peaked at #1 with 'bad guy' if I'm not wrong... and Ariana but we can have that conversation in another moment.

The question wasn't really the problem, Lana was really hated back in 2012 for singing about those things but it was necessary to name all this girls? Actually no.

It's crazy how it's been 6 YEARS since that letter and how she is doing rn compared to that time.

I mean, her tirade was clearly aimed at what she perceives as "black music" and that's probably the best way to examine it instead of the individual people.

Ariana's tanning and whether her place as a white woman in certain genres was problematic is a different conversation but this was literally also a huge hit on US radio at the time (as well as Camila's biggest hit having Young Thug on it with her at-the-time single being with Da Baby):

The issue with her feelings was 1) in her juxtaposing herself and her music as at odds with the music she was calling out and 2) her hostility to the music she was calling out when there was a significant part of her mainstream debut that was pulling from hip hop for aesthetics.

Her tone always read as though she felt she was being unfairly scrutinized for romanticizing harmful relationships because she was a white woman. And that she felt there were another group of people (black women) making much more ~vulgar~ pop music than her that weren't getting the same heat.

People get weird cause they'll think you're calling her specifically a Trump supporter even if you acknowledge she isn't, but there is an interesting conversation about how much of her feelings and pop cultural moments do kind of capture the general early 2020s anxieties seemingly many white people had around the pop culture during COIVD, police brutality, and the return of Trumpism (and how it manifested in MAGA Country being such a prominent genre). redface

I feel like only illiterate people and people with bad intentions find QFTC offensive. I don't want to hurt your feelings if you're one of them, there's still an opportunity to be better heart

She just came as out of touch with that one. Anything past the name drops made complete sense, but she somehow had to throw that in. Also, she was at the highest point of her career when it comes to being critically acclaimed and her career was re-peaking with NFR! So maybe she was just chronically online in her quarantine days bringing back her 2014 mindset instead of being aware that the bad old days were already gone

And Kehlani

Kehlani had just released an amazing album around that time, which outpeaked NFR! on the BB200, so maybe Lana was a little salty about it fan

Classic misogynoir that was doubled down upon with the next snoozefest cover controversy.

Funny, but the point kinda stands, not many of the girls in that list were making headlines nor destroying the charts in 2020
