Sonically, Gaga played it safe in the late 2010's while Katy took risks. Why?

Featured Replies

In the late 2010s, Katy Perry was taking musical risks with Witness while Gaga played it safe with Joanne and A Star Is Born. Flash forward to the late 2020s, and Gaga has definitely had the bigger decade. Was it a smart choice to play it safe instead of being risky and avant garde like Katy?

That was the early 2010s which is not what we're discussing

Tsunami is the only somewhat risky thing she ever did (and succeeded at that, kudos to her) and its an album track

Do you even know what avant-garde means? Cause saying that witness was avant-garde…

Also I'd argue Gaga making the pivot to stripped back ballads was risky for her because all of her true hits pre 2016 were electronic + dance pop. And now she's got 3 streaming hits from that era (Million Reasons, Shallow, Always Remember Us This Way) which redefined her image so that worked out.

Katy continued to try to get hits through dance music + rap features.

How was it safe for Gaga to completely pivot from her usual over the top outfits, dark electronic pop music to a stripped down image and country inspired music? Mind you that genre of music wasn't even popular back then, to me that was a bigger risk than whatever Katy was doing

So many of yall just get on the internet every day and lie….. and not even in like an ironic funny way , it's all just asinine and blatantly stupid

For Gaga, releasing Perfect Illusion, Million Reasons and Shallow was riskier than any Katy attempt. Hope that helps!

Katy has NEVER taken risks, she puts her career at risks. Let's start there.
