ot: yes miss Jackson if ya nasty

It's always funny to see Shakria included in these lists because they are technically 100% correct, her first album came out in 1991. But for all intents and purposes Shakira as we understand her and know her didn't come around until her third album in 1995.

I've always wondered why those first two completely buried albums (that sold only a few thousand copies each she won't even allow them to be re-released because she doesn't want to acknowledge them) get so often counted as part of her canon but Katy's pre-One of the Boys independent record and Lana's Lizzy Grant stuff usually doesn't.

Her fist two records (which are from 1991 and 1993 respectively) aren't even available on streaming and never will be which is what led to my post above. I don't know why we consider those two for her when we don't consider the early work of people like Katy and Lana or even Carly Rae Jepsen whose first works all exist under the same circumstances.

One of the Boys, Born to Die, and Kiss are all functionally those three's debut records, even if they put an album before. That is where they made major label, international debuts, and where they as the artist we know them as began.

Shakira's first two albums are nothing like the music she'd go on to make (the first one is like, synth pop???) and were incredibly limited releases. I cannot even find sales data of her first one outside of Columbia. Shakira herself has buried these two records and seems to treat Pies Descalzos as her true debut record. Which makes sense as it was her international debut.

21 - 76 - 1992 - Annie Lennox
22 - 76 - 1983 - Cyndi Lauper
23 - 2 - 1977 - Bonnie Tyler

I never realized that I haven't played Bonnie Tyler like at all... my goodness..

Also to add... Sade aren't a solo act, they are classified as a band, the confusion is totally understandable since they are named after their lead singer Sade Adu, and I was under the same confusion, too. It doesn't help they heavily use Sade Adu to represent them visually

But it they count, then we will have to add female fronted bands like The Cranberries and Blondie

The purpose of this thread was to put a little spotlight on older female acts. Stream them and appreciate them.

I like them ALL. But - as is with streaming - you often get lost in your own bubble. Cyndi is great, so is Bonnie and everyone on that list. It's just a reminder to play them if you're interested in their music and musical legacy.

That is all true. I find it so weird, though. I am aware of Sade being a band. <3

Simply they count 1991 to make her longevity seem even better than what already is compared to if we count it from 1995 upwards. It's always better to compare with breakthrought period like we can't compare Sia streaming stats with the late 90s / early 2000s or Sabrina Carpenter with the mid 2010s

Pre-computer?

yes, why not? The personal computer lead to the internet and social media and facilitated the end of the music era.

Personal computers in private households:

1990 - 80 million --> 500,000 internet users
1991 - 95 million --> 1 million IU
1992 - 115 million --> 2 million IU
1993 - 140 million --> 4 million IU
1994 - 170 million --> 9 million IU
1995 - 205 million --> 20 million IU
1996 - 245 million --> 40 million IU
1997 - 290 million --> 70 million IU
1998 - 345 million --> 120 million IU --> era of music downloading
1999 - 410 million --> 190 million IU --> era of music filesharing P2P
2000 - 480 million --> 285 million IU

2001 - 380 million internet users, 2002 - 500 million, 2003 - 600 million

shakira is pre streaming but not pre computer

stevy unrelated but is the guy in your avi from haunting of hill house/bly manor? WAP

Because they were released under different stage names

Oop Madonna fell off a lot, wasn't she at like 12m daily earlier this year

That's one way to look at it or you could say that her streams doubled from last year

Sorry but Jane Austen outsold >>>>>>>

Janet's discography is severely underrated. So many classics and bops that go unnoticed. I hope that changes eventually and that she gets her deserved flowers in the streaming era.

The computer was actually on the cover of Time Magazine for Machine of the Year (instead of naming a person of the year) in 1982. I think that should be the demarcation of pre-computer.

Years like 1983 and 1984 already feel like the computer era.
