On the Tea Time podcast, Raven-Symoné & her horcrux argue the blackness of "That's So Raven". Despite not being hired for a job due to the color of her skin & her father's own issues he experienced as a black entrepreneur, the character Raven Baxter is apparently not black according to the Grazing in the Grass songstress.

This is not the first time Raven has come under fire for diminishing her blackness. When she had a sit down with Oprah, she famously claimed she is not black, later clarifying in an interview she is from Every continent in Africa.

people always try and blame her wife, but raven has always been saying this coonbaya stuff long before they were together every time raven gets a little bit of goodwill and reminds people she's still funny and talented (her recent appearance on Adults), she ruins it with **** like this

I always understood the point she was trying to make with Oprah and she made sense once she clarified after all the backlash.. but I can't get behind her on this one. This is so embarrassing. TSR was a cultural phenomenon for everyone but especially black households during that time and as the youngest black female to have a tv show named after herself, she doesn't want to fully own it? Why make up this narrative and diminish it to just "color" when in actuality seeing color was a very important factor for many kids during that era?

Who cares who wrote the show? That's not really relevant when talking about the impact it still had for black folks. Maybe a little ironic if they were all white but doesn't take away the significance of it in the end. She's right that it was universal because the show was entertaining and fun for all kids and families, but let's not act like it didn't do a major service to the black community.

So many black girls and boys have had their personality and humor molded by Raven Baxter. When we're seeing black representation on a major network for young developing minds, having episodes revolve around or including things related to black people, literally having AAVE thrown in at times and Raven herself even telling Eddie "just like a n*gga" in the background of one scene that editors most likely missed, then yes.. Raven Baxter is going to feel black? Like wtf? They have the audacity to say "hear the words" and I'm just so perplexed…

But in all seriousness, she is so weird to want to erase that part of the identity of Raven as character. I hate when people throw in "but what if we change it to blue, green or purple". We live in a patriarchal system where misogny, racism and other phobes and isms are ingrained in.

And That's So Raven is set in that same kind of world. They literally dedicated an episode to her and Chelsea applying to the same job and Raven not being hired because of racism.

Girl just seal your lips.

That's So Raven is like the one show of that genre & era that this argument doesn't apply to She was very much written as a black character, using AAVE, listening to (legally distinct) Beyonce, being discriminated against by a business for her race, and having a dad who makes soul food.

I really do think her wife is a bad influence and intentionally diminishes Raven's success and what she meant to families at the time, whether it's to make them feel equal or whatever else. You can see that here with how she's inserting herself and restating that "it's white men!" that were responsible for the show. She's also very proud that she didn't grow up with That's So Raven, but did grow up with Even Stevens, implying she changed the channel whenever Raven came on.

This surely must be ragebait, right?

Wasn't there an episode where she was discriminated, with a white women literally saying "I don't hire black people"?

I love That's So Raven and I've been seeing so many posts reminiscing TSR and Cheetah Girls recently, but I've been a fan long enough to know time would come for Raven to come and ruin the momentum

And TSR was probably the blackest of the Black shows at Disney and most of that was on Ms. Pearman's own account, she brings that with her acting. Which is actually where I think most of her problems with her own Blackness comes from, she feels it limits her.

Btw, that's why I won't ever take sides on the Kiely vs. Raven feud, it was two insufferable ******* on the same set and Adrienne going whatever direction is more convenient for her.

Raven has a lot of questionable takes & terrible wording, but I think the point she was trying (& failing) to make was that TSR was relatable to all types of people?

Where she loses me is then also going on to reject the very clear, important & intentional black themes & coding of the show, something that should be celebrated & lauded as groundbreaking, particularly from Disney at the time. These 2 things don't have to cancel each other out.

I'm going to boil her reaction down to some resentment held about not being as successfully marketed or supported as the white girls from that era, so her instinct may be to push against any perceived implication that she wasn't universally marketable or had some type of audience ceiling she couldn't exceed, for example.

Her character was such a massive part of my childhood & shaped so much of my humor, creative expression & even vocabulary - literally a gay, Lebanese kid from Australia and to me, the show was very clearly both black AND universally relatable. That's what made it so special. I saw much more of myself in Raven & her family & friends than in Lizzie's, for example.

It's frustrating to hear her takes on things these days. I haven't been able to engage with anything she says since The View stint, ugh.

Raven and her wife are together for a reason and you all can make of that what you will.

Recently i been re-watching all the disney shows i loved as a teen-preteen
and to me the raven one is the best one. Is just so funny.
Yesterday i was watching the episode where she goes camping and i screamed
The writing was major and she's so charismatic
Her wife.........just lookin her pictures she gives me a bad vibe...
Of course raven is messy too lol but she should have someone guiding her better in life

I mean, I think everybody got that, but she doesn't have to cancel Raven's race to get that point across. And then this comes after years of Raven downplaying her own Blackness, the Cheetah Girls new line-up (which she certainly helped to chose as executive producer) having only one Black member, etc...

It got to a point where people are losing all good will in regards to Raven. And I say this as a huge fan of the actress, Raven-Symoné has this amazing career that made her mean so much to so many people, but every other interview she has to say something negative or controversial. I can't tell if she's seeking attention or is just a very negative-thinking person overall, but it's tiring and sad to see.

I fully understand what she's saying these characters were literally created by white men. She was not a representation of what black people actually were in her opinion.

This makes a lot of sense to me. They'll never make me hate you, Raven. You raised a generation.
