Dua's a popular singer, but Christina was an actual celebrity.

Dua is nowhere near being the cultural icon that Christina was. Britney and Christina were beyond massive, Dua has popular songs, but nowhere near the same cultural or musical impact that Christina had.

Future Nostalgia is bigger than anything Christina's done, and y'all acting like she's not a known celebrity when she's one of the biggest presences in social media and sold out the biggest arenas and several stadiums last year on name alone

Probably the one known as Legend with many #1 Hot 100 hits and multiple GRAMMYs across several decades

The one with 5 entries to the IFPI Chart, diamond SOLO certification, sold out stadium shows and 2 albums with >10M equivalent sales

sure she doesn't stream well these days but christina was truly the only competition to britney, and even then the comparisons were silly. you had to be there. genie in a bottle was bigger than most of britney's songs...and even what a girl wants and come on over baby were huge. especially COOB - it was really big at the time. and then dirrty (despite its low peak had the iconic video that EVERYONE talked about), beautiful and fighter were also big....and back to basics was also big. plus the grammies and the performances.

Oh we're finally getting to the point where I can start answering eldergay questions, this is exciting!

Well clears throat as someone who was very much aware of pop culture and pop music at the time, I can say it was Xtina. She was just a bigger thing, the clear #2 lady of pop music only behind Britney. The songs felt bigger, Genie, Lady Marmalade (at the time it was perceived as basically Xtina feat. the other girls), Beautiful just felt more omnipresent than most Dua hits. Like don't get me wrong Dua was properly huge between 2020-2023, but Christina just felt like a notch above in terms of celebrity and star power.

And you can kinda see it in the first week sales, which indicate the fanbase. Dua's first three albums have all been well below 100k first week, whereas Xtina's first three albums all did over 250k first week.

it was also unfair for christina and britney to be compared period...christina really wasn't that bubblegum pop, like britney. she was really in her own lane.

people also forget how huge TRL was. like everyone used to watch that religiously after school and christina performed just as well as britney video/fan voting wise

It's impossible to compare a true streaming-era album like Future Nostalgia with true pure sales eras like Xtina's first two albums because a massive proportion of streams, which get converted into 'album units', are passive streams from playlisting, autoplay or algorithmic playlists (and a not insignificant percentage are also bots). If 60% of Future Nostalgia's streams (conservative estimate) were not because someone actually clicked play on it, should it really be equated to an album you had to actually decide to spend money on?

Yeah MTV was essentially the YouTube of the time and obviously didn't count for album sales or anything. But exposure there was a huge part of how big an artist felt, how famous they were, how famous the songs got etc. Whereas now YouTube does count towards 'album units' lol. It's really pointless to compare albums from the 2020s to albums from the 90s/2000s.

Dua's known, but for her music. Christina was known for her music, AND scandalous outfits, AND feuds with other celebrities, AND tv appearances, merchandise, endorsements, etc etc etc. This is a poll about their cultural footprint beyond music

I'm not going to deny Xtina's impact like culturally she has influenced many girls (including Dua), but if we talk about a solid commercial run I would say Dua is winning over Xtina. Let's check:

Dua's first run (2015-2025) was incredible considering how she started from zero to became one of the biggest female acts of this decade meanwhile Xtina (1998-2008) started great too but every record after 'Stripped' she started a terrible run, 'Back to Basic' wasn't a flop but she never went back to the Top (only with some droplets in the 2010s).

Dua still have that It Factor and potential to push her career for many years, after her weeding her celebrity persona is now much bigger and 'Future Nostalgia" is culturally impactful as one of the biggest records of this decade.

chart performance does not always equal impact, my god

again, something must have happened with ain't no other man behind the scenes because the actual debut of the song was huge

and it got a lot of play despite only peaking at #6 - at least in new york city

dua's stats and numbers dwarf xtina but culturally? dua has never been a trailblazer or cultural force she's just kind of there when she's not giving us massive hits sort of like ellie goulding in the 2010's
