Chromatica: the laziest album cycle ever?

Featured Replies

I'm not even talking about the music or its commercial success. Chromatica debuted at #1 with 274K units and gave Gaga another #1 single with "Rain On Me." I'm talking about the actual era.

Because Gaga did not introduce this as a regular dance album with some pink outfits. "Stupid Love" literally opened with:

"The world rots in conflict. Many tribes battle for dominance."

We were introduced to seven color-coded tribes with their own names, symbols and supposed roles: the Kindness Punks, Freedom Fighters, Junkyard Scavengers, Government Officials, Eco Warriors, Cyber Kids and Spiritual Ones. PAPER published an entire breakdown, while fans were already mapping out the tribes and theorising about an ongoing war before the album even arrived.

Like… this was being sold as a whole sci-fi pop universe. A planet. Three acts. Tribes. Symbols. Fashion. Lore. The girls thought we were getting the MCU for homosexuals.

And apparently the original campaign really was enormous. Gaga's manager Bobby Campbell reportedly spent around 18 months planning it, while Interscope's CEO called it "one of the best rollouts planned for an album ever." Coachella, the iHeartRadio Awards, additional videos and brand campaigns were among the plans that disappeared once COVID hit. That part is fully documented, so obviously nobody can pretend the pandemic did not completely destroy the original rollout.

But what did this massive universe ultimately become during the actual release cycle?

  • Three music videos: "Stupid Love," "Rain On Me" and "911"

  • One major televised performance at the VMAs

  • Four episodes of Gaga Radio

  • A Weather Channel skit

  • A Haus Labs palette and Adobe competition

  • A Valentino perfume commercial

  • Pink Oreos with Chromatica symbols stamped into them

"Sour Candy," a collaboration with BLACKPINK, received a lyric video. "Alice," "Replay" and "Babylon" received absolutely nothing. "911" barely received a proper global single push, while "Free Woman" was quietly smuggled onto French radio almost eleven months later.

The tribal conflict introduced in "Stupid Love" was never meaningfully developed either. "Rain On Me" gave us more color-coded outfits, while the excellent "911" video followed an entirely different narrative..

And fans were already noticing this in real time:

  • On July 6, 2020, barely five weeks after the album dropped, GagaDaily users were genuinely asking: "So is the Chromatica era over or…?"

  • By November 2020, fans said the album already felt "old" from the lack of promotion and were still waiting for the infamous, never-officially-announced Chromatica TV.

  • In April 2021, a Popheads retrospective joked that the era lasted from May 22 to May 29, briefly came back for the VMAs and died again after "911."

  • By April 2022, ATRL itself was casually calling it "an abandoned era" before the tour had even started.

Yes, the project eventually received the fantastic Dawn of Chromatica remix album 15 months later, the hugely successful 20-date Chromatica Ball two years later, and an HBO concert film four years later. Those projects absolutely redeemed its legacy, but were they really an active album rollout or an extremely delayed afterlife?

Because even ARTPOP, while suffering a managerial implosion, still dragged herself through the VMAs, iTunes Festival, SNL, AMAs, a Muppets special, SXSW and the artRAVE tour. Joanne put on that pink hat and clocked into dive bars, SNL, the AMAs, Victoria's Secret, the Super Bowl, Coachella, a world tour and a Netflix documentary.

And after watching Gaga turn MAYHEM into a full gothic opera with multiple videos, SNL, Coachella, Copacabana, the VMAs, an enormous world tour and even a final live album/film… Chromatica increasingly resembles a very expensive flop.

  • i agree, chromatica coulda been a much bigger era. for an artist like gaga, her music shines thru visuals, promo, and live performances. i think what a lot of ppl aren’t considering is her mental heal

i agree, chromatica coulda been a much bigger era. for an artist like gaga, her music shines thru visuals, promo, and live performances. i think what a lot of ppl aren’t considering is her mental health at the time. she was severely depressed (with suicidal ideation) and still pushed herself to release an album bc she wanted to help others heal thru their dark times.

then the pandemic, protests, and politics threw a monkey wrench into any plans to further promote the album. tbh the pandemic saved her from being lashed.

overall, this album proves that gaga can do the bare minimum and still do well.

Half the post is literally dated forum threads, Billboard reporting and archived fan reactions. AI would've hallucinated a Chromatica TV Netflix special and cited GagaWiki as CNN jdkjdsajk

Lady phoned that record in. It was truly a Bloodpop album featuring Lady Gaga. But it gave us 911, so I can't be mad at her.

The way I see it, Chromatica wasn't really true to what Gaga wanted to make. She mentioned in the past that she was recording a different album initially & that BloodPop told her it was bad and to start from scratch, and at least some songs (namely 1000 Doves) have a totally sound than Gaga desired when she recorded them. Imo, the visual concept with the neon colors also wasn't very true to Gaga's personal style, and felt more like self-parody, like Gaga had lost touch with what "Lady Gaga" means to her after ARTPOP.

The more serious rebranding of Chromatica with 911 and the tour feels a lot more like Gaga to me, and a lot more cohesive with earlier stuff like TFM/BTW & now MAYHEM. chick1

Oh you're talking about the promotional schedule? I thought this was about the actual music quality. The cheap generic beats, the unfinished song structures where verses, bridges, and even choruses are missing, the Stupid Love video and those homemade outfits, etc

It's obviously not fair to compare it to other eras because Covid put a wrench in their plans and they needed to get creative with their promo...but yeah, it was frustrating that they didn't seem to try while others were coming up with cool and creative ways to promote during the pandemic. But it seems like Gaga was not in a good place around then so I give her some grace.

I mean - to your title, decidedly no because of what you've laid out in OP

it wasn't lazy, it was derailed

yes, arianas back still hurting from carrying that era along with scoring abel and bieber and herself #1s and an oscar nominated role at the same time

The album was released the week George Floyd died. Stop being disrespectful. There's an obvious reason it was halted. Covid basically killed the rest of it.

Chromatica is a victim of circumstance sadly (COVID), Bobby revealed a few years after in an interview that Interscope invested the same amount of money into Chromatica as her "comeback" to dance music as they did for Born This Way but it all just fell apart.

But we should be thankful, because not only did she not care for the album —because of her mental health at the time — but all the contracts that were unfulfilled got carried over to Mayhem and it's pre-era. (Fortnite, Coachella, Copacabana etc)

What was the excuse for Mayhem? They could've done multiple videos.

Could've been more, but there's not much that can be done about it now.

Using AI to attempt to shade someone for allegedly using AI isn't quite doing what you think it's doing for you sis.

Anyways on topic

OP you can't begin by acknowledging it has good sales and a #1 single then end your post by calling it a flop.

Both things can't be true.

Gaga herself did say she regrets the way she handled Chromatica and considered it a half measure, so we got the Mayhem era, which more than makes up for anything we didn't receive during the Chromatica era.

I typed a several sentences here so if you disagree with anything just say I must have been using AI.
