I don't think wanting to help your own mother is a 'waste of time and money' bffr priceless

No, don't do that. People who are addicted to drugs have to want the help that is provided to them. If they're grown adults, legally there isn't much one can do. You can't force them into a home or treatment if they don't want it. Even when it's a parent. They're the ones who have to put in the work to get and stay clean and fully commit to the long road of recovery. Unforutenly, like many addicts, her demons got the best of her. I have no doubt he used his money and resources to get his mother help. Don't try to frame it like it's partly his fault.

She was addicted to drugs and may have had to cut her off to try and help her

Apparently she didn't want help to get clean yet, and you can't force someone rip I know someone homeless by choice who is also on drugs. No one wants that for them.
