Billboard: Grammys consider revamping "Asian Pop Music" category amid backlash

Featured Replies

The Recording Academy is considering to revamp its new 'Asian Pop' category for the 2027 Grammys, Billboard reports.

Discussions about the category have been held with representatives from K-pop, J-pop, C-pop, Indian music and more, including labels like HYBE over the past weeks.

Two weeks ago, BTS famously announced they won't submit their music for Grammy consideration next year, citing that they "hope that music can be heard and loved for what it is, rather than being divided by region or language."

Can't see the full article because of the paywall...

Are they going to expand several branches of the Asian Pop Music category, or will they just clump all the genres into one category?

The Asian pop industry is big in terms of volume and variety.

They need to expand it extensively if they want to be truly global. Bollywood music is not the same as K-pop and can't be expected to be in one category.

The fact they even threatened with this category was desperate & idiotic pandering. It's the Grammy's not the VMAs

I agree; they need to consider the three large spheres of Asian pop. South Asia, East Asia and Southeast Asia.

That's like half of the world's population; it'll be a miscalculation if they just approach this as an afterthought.

Just make a KPOP category, CPOP etc.. there's R&b etc.. other types of music why not?

Asian category is just stupid.

Unpopular opinion but they should stop trying to be a global award show and just focus on the US. You'd never see something like this from the BRITs, Junos, etc.

The only way to do that would be a seperate Grammys for Asian music like they do for Latin music.

they're trying so hard to become irrelevant like the vmas and amas by trying to be global.

Are we pretending as if this isn't because of how popular Kpop is in America? It's still 100% America centric.

Katy should do a K pop song with Jennie and snag an Asian Grammy to go with her Indian Grammy for SOTY 2020

I agree 100%

I mean, make it " Best international record" instead? "Asian record" sounds weird tbh although it would be fitting as other countries can be included.

Well, the criteria was a mess from the beggining

If they do this, they will have to merge it with the African Music performance and all that...

Crazy how this problem is old and rotten

They are doing the opposite of what they should be doing. Follow the Brits and the Canadians and I imagine

other nations. Americans should get the bulk of the Grammys and then create a limited number of "international"

award categories that everyone else has to fight over. Until other countries let the Americans compete in all their categories this is

only fair.

Their problem already stems from the fact that K-pop groups, especially BTS, have become too big to ignore. BTS's concert tour attracted over 1 million attendees in the North American leg alone. Arirang is still the best-selling album of the year in US, both physically and on vinyl.

Luminate: BTS hits record high

According to new Luminate data

, BTS has reached new highs of awareness and favorability when it comes to U.S. consumers. One stat that jumps out is that Arirang had the strongest vinyl sales of any group since Luminate began tracking album sales in 1991.

According to Luminate, 42% of U.S. consumers recognize BTS, nearly matching the group's all-time high of 43%. BTS's awareness is significantly above the industry average of 24%, putting the group 18 percentage points ahead of the typical artist tracked by Luminate. Another way to see this: BTS is recognized by about 4 in 10 Americans, while the average artist is recognized by only 2 in 10.

The Grammys appear to be rethinking the new award for Asian pop just weeks after BTS announced they would not submit their music for the 2027 awards.

"It's clear from our numerous conversations with many stakeholders over the past two weeks that, regardless of our intent and desire to be even more inclusive, there are some artists in this space who feel that this category isn't representing the music they work so hard to create, in the way they wish... The management and Board are committed to working together to keep pace with that progress and ensure the musicians we intend to honor feel truly seen and heard by our actions," Recording Academy CEO Harvey Mason Jr. said in a statement.

Sources tell Variety that Mason and other Grammy executives have been in discussion with artists and execs representing K-pop, J-pop, C-pop, India and more. The Academy is convening its full Board and Awards & Nominations Committee to work with members of and leaders from this community to seek further advice on the category, as well as its process for introducing new categories and awards.
