Dancing without being able to sing - the equivalent of a pretty cake that tastes bad?

Featured Replies

Whilst I was preparing dinner for the wife and kids earlier, a thought entered my head. A lot of newer bakers worry their decoration skills are somewhat lacking, but the advice they often receive is as follows: better a cake that tastes good but looks bad, than a cake that looks amazing but tastes like ****.

Similarly, a lot of discussion is had over stage presence and performance abilities on this site. But often it seems we forget the most fundamental aspect of musicianship. What is that, I hear you ask? Of course, it is the making of the music itself. Specifically in this case, the ability to sing. Is there much point in being able to do a triple backflip and put your legs behind your head if the sound you make when you open your mouth is...less than pleasant?

Something to ponder perhaps

It's boring to watch a concert where someone is just standing in front of a microphone, no matter how good their vocals are. Dancing at least keeps the audience engaged.

I would say the equivalent of a pretty cake that tastes bad is artists who can dance, can sing, can perform, can write and yet their music is... well, not good. Like it's okay to have a team behind yo

Well Tate can sing flawlessly so I'm not sure why her likeness is on your cake. Poor trolling. Mods close this thread!!!

Only Beyoncé, Dua Lipa, and Camilla Cabello can dance and sing today.

Oh, and Prime Madonna.

NONE of the girls today can

do this STELLAR performance:

Good lord...

Performance ability is not nothing. It's perfectly reasonable to enjoy an artist that's primarily more a performer than a vocalist (Janet, JLO, etc) because they understand how to make music captivating onstage.

What you're probably getting at is an artist that is a dancer rather than a performer Tate

It's an undeniable skill to be a good dancer and Tate McRae especially is not just a good mover but someone who spent hours and hours every day in the dance studio taking classes and developing her talent. I'm not even a huge fan of her, but to downplay her dancing like this is kinda weird and also disrespectful to the dance world generally

As long as they're doing something on stage I don't mind what it is.

I do have to say, as a Britney stan, I like that no matter how bad the new girls are at singing live at least they do sing (mind you, mics can be autotuned nowadays).

A lot of Britney performances/tour lack punch cause of the CD vocals imo I wish she at least did pre-recorded more often

It is sad that after Taylor went through the bullying that she endured when she was young that her very own fanbase is doing to Olivia exactly what she herself had experienced. ace

This is true if you view dancing as a lesser form of art than singing.

Depends on what you mean by dance, there's FKA twigs and there's bare minimum pop star choreo

It's the full package that counts.

Charli, for example, isn't the best singer or dancer, yet she outperforms the majority of your favs. hippo

I'd rather watch her Lollapalooza set 100x over than see a girl struggling to sing cos she's doing flips, kicks, and jumps all over a stage. Some girls (Beyoncé etc.) manage both, but they're exceptions.

It's so very obvious the certain ppl that topics like this are aimed at with the main being Britney but I will just say it's honestly really hilarious how there's been so many girls to show up since her that do Britney better than Britney did Britney but they don't get the props just cause they aren't quite mega sellers like she was worship

have you ever been to a concert of someone who can sing?

Adele
Mariah
Céline
Whitney
Streisand
Prince
Springsteen
McCartney
Elton John
Billie Joel
Phil Collins
Beatles
Genesis
U2
Aretha
Shania
Alanis
Sheryl
Faith
P!NK
Bon Jovi
Guns N Roses
etc

I will forever be drunk of the vocal experiences. (I saw the Beatles in 1962 in Hamburg).

Well I cannot listen to a choreo on CD.
