Ariana to take break from public after tour, drops out of 'Sunday in the Park'

Again, posturing and pretending to be an expert doesn't actually give credence to your claimed positions.

Especially when you have to lie to make such claims.

This is why people are called out because how does your alleged sympathy for her result in you lying about her?

One user lied about what was in her music video. You yourself now sit here and lie about her words through purposeful omission.

Not a single medical professional who treats eating disorders would co-sign this witch hunt and mass public shaming.

So ask yourself why your witch hunt has to be predicated on lying about Ariana's actions and Ariana's words.

Why purposefully exclude that the time she said she was unhealthy was in relation to being depressed and sad over her dead ex-boyfriend and the unhealthy behavior she was actually largely talking about was abusing alcohol?

It all goes back to "heads I win, tails Ariana loses".

You first invent the claim that she is in denial and calls herself the healthiest she has ever been; etc..

Yet when it's pointed out how she has never actually claimed herself to be extremely healthy, and was simply telling fans the era in her life they romanticize because it was her most commercially successful she was actually mentally ill and heavily drinking, the accusation flips to "LOOK HOW OBSESSED WITH HOW UNHEALTHY SHE WAS. FURTHER PROOF OF HER DISORDERED EATING! WHEN WILL SHE COME CLEAN??"

If Ariana doesn't speak about being unwell and thin, you will say she's in denial.

When Ariana speaks about the struggles of being unwell and the pressure she's faced to be thin, like in the Petal video, you will claim she's actually secretly relishing in and enjoying her thinness.

If Ariana says she's healthy or her PR says she's healthy enough to do her tour, she's accused of promoting a dangerous image.

But if Ariana speaks of how unwell she's been throughout her career and what struggles said had with depression, the accusation switches to she's now obsessed with the idea of being unhealthy.

There's no off-ramp. There's no actual road to recovery you've offered Ariana to exist as a person with disordered eating and be allowed to exist publicly. You've said any attempt she has made to heal in plain sight makes you too uncomfortable.

A post on this very page literally sees a user get mad that Ariana wants to share photos from her music video. You not only presume she has no sense of being unwell nor been on any journey of recovery, but ultimately accuse her of denial if she doesn't look at her own personhood with the same disgust you've made it clear you feel for her.

If your only Investment in Ariana Grande is to harp on her and shout in disgust any time she updates her instagram, even after having won and forced her to retread from her career, I would suggest finding a more productive target for your alleged expertise.

Lastly, I have never said she personally thrives of the criticism she receives, but it's quite well documented that these illnesses do.

As for this "If your only Investment in Ariana Grande is to harp on her and shout in disgust any time she updates her instagram" - I have already said her health shouldn't be censored on instagram. If she openly wished to discuss this and advocate trying to maintain a healthier lifestyle then she could really use her platform for good in a way that would be very unique for an artist of her stature.

Again I am not a dietician but I've had this account since high school, and over the years have mentioned as part of my further eduction I have worked in multiple areas of healthcare from neurology to dermatology and cardiology - in both the NHS and the private sector. (if you really wish to dig deep into my 16 years of posting) I'm not forming opinions out of some blind hatred of an artist I've always adored.

The biggest part of this that you fail to address is both her and her team have made the decision that to give her some respite for a reason. Whether it's born of genuine concern for her or a larger concern for her brand, they know that doubling down on this has made it worse. In the UK and I believe the US agencies have had entire ad campaigns pulled due to promoting an unhealthy body image and the corporations fined... this outrage is not exclusive to her, even if this might be the first time you've encountered this conversation at this level. When you look at examples of those campaigns the models do not look half as unwell as Ariana has these last few months. The fact she is now crying on stage, and announced a hiatus tells you this is what she wants to do, so want that for her to.

We really need a ZTP for these kinds of comments. This is getting really inappropriate and downright offensive.

Good luck, queen. A lot of us are rooting for you.

This above all 🙏🏻

I don't think it's any scrutiny it's all concern. People aren't stupid they can tell something is wrong.

Why are half of the posts in this thread unhinged psychoanalysis of Users responses? This thread is talking more about Users than Ariana. Exhausting.

It is a complex issue, but as much as it's being said that Users should not be commenting on Ariana's potential eating disorder, which does have merit, it does seem to be the discourse surrounding this video that could very well put Ariana on the road to recovery.

Even if Ariana herself perhaps would not choose to seek treatment, perhaps her team will now create a situation where she does pursue treatment due to the backlash and optics, Which in itself, is a thorny issue. Will trying to physically cure Ariana of her potential anorexia matter if Ariana doesn't recover mentally or personally want to pursue it? Personally, I don't think recovery will work unless it is the person suffering from the ailment that decides for themselves to pursue genuine recovery, but the fact that this is a celebrity with resources the usual sufferer would not have but also the epi-centre of a Multi million dollar empire, I don't know how that changes wether this can continue to be ignored.

Ultimately, no one here is a doctor, I doubt anyone here is taking joy or wishing ill will towards Ariana, but ultimately ATRL is for discussing pop culture and a popstar suffering from a potential eating disorder is going to be something pop culture observers want to engage with and analyse, that's just the mentality of Stan culture, but that doesn't mean the discourse is coming from a salacious or mean spirited or flippant intent.

re reading the statement and it kinda reads like a hissy fit deadbanana it's like the team is mad the public is not feeling this era so they are like welp no play for you guys! and she's going on a break away from you!

That PR statement is truly bizarre to say the least suburban anyways, hopefully Ariana and the ones around her actually use the needed break to take care of herself.

There's a viral tweet with 31k likes quoting her speaking about loving her fans and them being a safe space on the current tour… saying it's her suicide note

and some of yall wanna act like the discourse about this is entirely normal bffr

her exact wording - I've just watched to check was she was "eating poorly" which is exactly what I said.

Again, I say it in all earnest, I don't understand how you believe you can try and misquote her words and not understand how there is going to backlash to or upset over this. Just in the same way another user lied about what happens in the Petal video, these things will get pushback.

There is no other artist of her generation who has been as transparent and open with her mental health as to shine a light on it for others.

There has been no other artist of her age to work as tirelessly to try and de-stigmatize issues involving mental health by offering her own struggles up for public examination in ways that feature unprecedented honesty. You know more about the horrors that have defined her life than any other celebrity you could name yet still demand to want to know more.

For that radical transparency to be now weaponized against her in ways that are overtly dishonest is obviously going to cause calls for people to actually be accurate in attempted psycho-analysis and armchair diagnosis of her and her personhood.

Online commentators can posture and shout there is only good intent behind the harsh public examination of her happening, but it's seeming like even publications are beginning to catch on to the type of vitriol that is being slipped in under the guise of concern.

Caught between a defensive line of fans, an array of worried and/or triggered observers, and people dressing their gleeful critiques of a woman's body in the guise of concern, Grande interjects some of the slowest, somberest music of her career.

"Petal" makes us linger in the disapproval for the star's current body and the bustier ideal people point to when they express concern that she is suffering very publicly from an eating disorder. This play is about us, and it suggests that life on the business end of the public's nonstop conjecture must feel the same year on year — like never getting free of unsolicited advice from strangers on how to look, dress, speak, and even eat. The "Petal" video is difficult to watch; it's a swift study of everything people object to about her appearance now that asks us to take stock of her evolution and watch her read a suggestion that she "could lose a few lbs." There's an unspoken message of "**** off and die" in this song for people who believe they've diagnosed Grande with all sorts of medical and mental-health crises. It sharpens the album's annoyances to a point, setting up shop right in the middle of the chilling summerlong discourse.

The primary goal of everyone regarding Ariana is getting her the help she needs. It's obvious she is not well and needs intervention to recover. Some people are expressing this in slightly distasteful ways unfortunately.

The factor that needs to be considered is how intentional this music video release was to highlight her current size. You can't wish for people to stop the conversation about Ariana's body AND consume her current music that is designed to highlight her body at the same time.

The first paragraph is a fact, the second one is an assumption. Is she supposed to cover herself up or wear a fatsuit or whatever else before stepping out in public or films a video? That's her current body therefore that's the body that is being displayed. It doesn't sit right with me that whatever discomfort one feels upon seeing her physique is attributed to her showing it off, inadvertently putting blame on her for your reaction to it.

What part of the English language do you fail to understand? To make sure I wasn't misquoting I checked, I haven't said she said anything she hasn't. YOU on the other hand have taken HER words from her two minute video about her weight, conflated it into a statement about alcoholism which was mentioned once and grief that she didn't mention at all. When you weren't inserting those words you were translating her very clear words about her physical appearance into a statement about her commercial success that exists solely in your imagination. You keep rolling with your armchair diagnosis statement whilst cherry picking two words from a statement and putting it into all of this. The irony is painful.

As for your this "there has been no other artist" and "radical transparency" this is an outright nonsense and blatant mistruth. Everyone from GaGa and her conversations surrounding lupus, not to mention the impact of being a sexual assault survivor, to Halsey and her record about the time she nearly died, to Lorde who emails fans updates about her health have all been open about their health issues to name but a few and the latter has been very vocal about their eating disorder and the negative impact being in the public eye has on that. All of them in far more detail than Ari… And that's ok. She doesn't have to speak about her personal wellbeing, she does however need to be responsible for it, as do we all. It just highlights the fact that you're just saying anything and everything as you go along.

posting conversational think pieces doesn't mean it's right for her to stay in a situation that's detrimental to her nor does it make you right.

I was on a lot of anti-depressants, and drinking on them, and eating poorly, and at the lowest point of my life, when I looked the way you consider my healthy, but that wasn't in fact my healthy". It's like that user who fragrantly made up something about the Petal video:

23 hours ago, gloamingtheplain said:

purposely has her body check to showcase her frame and then purposely comments that she can afford to lose some weight.

This quite literally does not happen. The literal opposite happens. We're shown losing weight doesn't actually make things better.

The intended message of the video - so no matter how one thinks it landed - is inverted and Ariana's message of how being told to lose weight negatively impacted her is turned into a "gotcha" and somehow evidence of a giddiness to be thin.

The idea that, just because defending her isn't the "trending" thing right now, and it's far more incentivized to rake her over the coals for likes, that it means people won't point out when others are lying, or that you can brigade and dogpile on users for calling out this lying, is not going to work.

We are past beyond the point where her health condition is speculation only. Some "fans" in here need to stop being nasty enablers.

I wish Ariana the best and hope she gets the help she needs.

I corrected that and she still says as you have now quoted that she's referring to her body image being viewed as healthy when she was unhealthy? She's trying to, as well you know, deflect from her current situation by trying to say she was emotionally unhealthy even when she was presented as physically healthy. It's ok not to comment because she's happy now, her only problem is the scrutiny, sure Jan. And that's it. Like I said in my previous post that you deliberately didn't quote if she was eating poorly then what on earth is she doing now. This obsession with the music video is also really odd when it's the images you keep defending that have an ignited a universal conversation, and made the six oclock news. You've dropped that antidepressant argument, although it's recklessly irresponsible to say it's unhealthy to take them when so many people actively rely them. The whole thing is an exercise in denial and her stepping away now is the most reasonable thing she can do in this instance, how anyone fails to see that is beyond comprehension.

Ariana: *talks about how drinking on anti-depressants was bad for her because it's understood constant alcohol consumption will stop anti-depressants from working*

You: "so you and Ariana are now claiming it's bad to take anti-depressants?? even though so many rely on them??????"

This woman needs help, full stop. Whether she can continue on her tour or promote Petal (or Petaughl depending on which personality she's into that day), she needs help.

I have tried not to engage in this thread but I have following it. Some of the responses here have been shocking and quite frankly disgusting.

It is clearly evident that Ariana is suffering and looks quite unwell right now. People forget that this woman had so much trauma within the public eye - Manchester and Mac's passing being clear examples of that.

I'm wishing all the best for this well deserved break and I really hope she gets the help that she needs. She's a generational talent and a pure sweetheart who deserves the best!

No, she died from pneumonia. Her abusive husband encouraged her to lose weight because he liked thin women. Her body was so weakened that she couldn't fight it.
