Ariana Grande: Concern or Parasocial Behavior?

Featured Replies

It's both, but I would say for most people it's the former. I think the fact she's also TOURING in this state is what makes people even more concerned. I genuinely think most people are just trying to prevent an unnecessary death from happening, even though there really isn't any discourse that's going to directly help the situation.

Only she can really save herself at this point :-/

People are right to be concerned about her, especially with her pro-ana history. That being said there's not anything anyone can do and this discourse will get us nowhere, the only person who can stop

    Both are happening

It's not concern for most people. They see an opportunity to body shame a celeb they don't like and maintain a moral high ground so they're taking it. It's called concern troling.

……………..um ok rip

It's both, but with how magnified everything is in social media nowadays, anything polarizing or demeaning would generate the most think pieces

That being said there's not anything anyone can do and this discourse will get us nowhere, the only person who can stop Ariana from killing herself is her and her hoard of yes-men and leeching enabling family sure don't care.

Not everything is a conflict between different parties.

Not everything is a battle of good versus evil.

Not everything is a matter of moral failing you're called on as a spectator to come off the sidelines to champion a side in.

The much harder and honest truth is that some people just experience issues that are going to be incredibly difficult and all you can do is hold space for them.

Also while there should be a greater understanding that public figures don't ask to me role models, there's room for genuine discussion about how Ariana may be glamorizing ED to a vulnerable audience, even if her choices feel highly individual to her.

She literally posted this lol. She knows what she's doing.

EDs are a mental illness and getting validation from other people for being small is a huge part of that. She's not doing things because she's got diabolical intentions.

People are worried, I think that's something that, added to all her media exposure (Wicked and Tour), has made it a much-discussed topic. The problem is that I hate seeing people making fun of it and spreading more hate when it's such a sensitive thing about how is Ariana.

I think both is happening right now. It was starting to get really infuriating the discourse surrounding her body and the truth is these so called "fans" making tik toks about her talking about her "endorsing ED" or "The conversation we aren't allowed to have" meanwhile everyone is having it. It's all performative and engagement farming because that's all that social media is these days, insert random celeb or person insert buzz headline and then let's have a "discussion" where it's either black and white and no nuance behind it.

But you also have to be blind to not notice how completely different she looks these days and yes it is alarming and should be brought up but the problem lies in the fact that the internet does not know how to bring it up tactfully. The conversations are simply "she looks crazy" "She's promoting unhealthy lifestyles to little girls" "she's not ok" I highly doubt any of this is beneficial to her psyche to constantly listen to. The best thing you can do is reach out to her close friends and family who hopefully are doing something about this but I think it's come to a point where we really can't do anything as fans, people are making memes about how she looks and that's how I know this concern is fake. As a fan I really hope she is actually fine and just prepping for that new movie role but I'd be lying if I said I wasn't nervous with how she looks rn but what can I do besides pray for the best

The public cant just ignore it which is fair. Eating disorders are serious and super hard to treat.

Their icon is from 2015, which is when she was facing just as much criticism for how thin she was.

That people don't realize this has been a decades-long issue she's dealt with and has dedicated most of her life to work on gives credence to, not against, the idea that people are expressing their discomfort out of a need to virtue signal, not actually in a desire to understand what Ariana is going through.

People's discomfort is their own. Anyone uncomfortable looking at her has every right to those feelings, but ultimately most comments reveal the only "solution" most people can imagine for this situation is the stigmatization of Ariana Grande as a person ostracized for the idea of mental illness as moral failure and not a world in which thinness is not incentivized and privileged.

Ariana Grande is not the cause of the glamorization of thinness. If people believe she has an ED, she is but a victim to the very same problem being named. She is not the sun in which the entertainment industry's obsession with thinness orbits around, but a single star in a constellation of other issues that people could more productively put their time to than trying to sleuth what she eats for meals as they're doing on TikTok or brigading her posts on instagram with community notes about anorexia.

I'm genuinely concerned about the images she gives off to all the young girls that look up to her. My niece is anorexic and she really gets off on it when people tell her how skinny she is, I hope this is not the case with Ariana.

These people are so concerned they go as far as harassing staff from restaurants she is seen at by DMIng them or commenting on their social media asking what she ordered and if she ate anything. Then posting screenshots online of them doing this for engagement. Deranged asf. They're just "concerned" about her, the young girls and mental health though.rip

Also 90% of Ariana's fanbase are adults. It's funny how female pop stars fanbase just don't age and stay young girls forever in this discourse. Convenient. Nobody does this whataboutism with Travis Scott or Playboi Carti when they do actual awful things that could influence their fanbase of young boys. Misogyny alive and well.

Lmao I've been thinking the same thing ngl but I did just remember Wicked gained her a new segment of younger fans too

I think at the end of the day while we all may have different ways of expressing it, some harsher than others, we all really just feel a strong sense of protection over someone we perceive as vulnerable and, want nothing but the best for her. We don't know what to do and there's nothing we really can do as bystanders, which heightens the frustration. It's a very sad, difficult situation and the solutions are unclear.

I don't like the narrative I am seeing of her being some sort of villain in this situation. If people are so concerned for young girls and people with ED's for the "message she is sending", what kind of message does THAT send?

Yeah but there isn't that many of them, tbh. Her current music isn't catered towards a young audience. They might enjoy her older stuff and Glinda but that's it. At her concerts the kids present are there with their mother who is the fan. Kids are fickle too, they like different things each week. Ariana is 33 years old and been a huge pop star for almost 15 years. Her fanbase is mostly adult women and gays atp.

What truly baffles me is that she's really getting a whole hate train just cause she doesn't want to be fully open about HER alleged ED. It's HER problem, if she wants to be silent about it and work on it on her own, then good for her. She doesn't need to be open about everything just so people will relate. Not her responsibility to fulfil everyone's needs each time they want.

The open discourse is important for people to see that anorexia is not cute or glam. This is not just about Ariana. The damage she is doing to the public needs to be counteracted giraffe
