Sensitive: Ariana and Karen Carpenter Comparisons

it's kinda insane how her loved ones are just watching her slowly kill herself. she shouldn't be touring at all.

i don't really care anymore about the "you shouldn't comment on it, what you expect us to do" type of comments. she's one of the biggest popstars in the world and the bodychecking on the petal MV was disturbing. people are gonna watch and therefore, they're gonna talk. i just hope someone inside her inner circle is actually worried about her because i truly don't know how you can love someone and not be extremely concerned about a situation like this.

This is why I think she's ill (not mentally ill) and is going through treatments that are making her not able to eat properly. I hate to draw the comparison, but I have relatives who lost dangerous amounts of weight while undergoing chemo and radiation therapy because they lost all appetite. I sincerely hope whatever she's going through is not that, but I do believe her loved ones wouldn't let her get this way if it was an ED. Her mother and brother wouldn't let this happen if it was avoidable IMO.

Even if Ariana does have an ED (none of us can know that for sure,) all these tweets prove is that a lot of these people tweet this to feel better about themselves and don't really understand the cogn

This comparison has been going on for months. Ariana needs help and Republic Records is absolutely evil and completely devoid of a moral compass.

Not gonna lie, the whole 'stop talking about womens bodies!!!' sentiment felt like gaslighting and has done more harm than well, acting as if everyone is healthy when they are not.

My heart goes out to Ariana and I hope she can find the strength to overcome this.

People saying about her friends/ family etc. Sure, they should t be gaslighting her into saying everything is fine and that she appears heavy, but there's only so much that other people can do. The strength to get better and back to a healthy weight needs to come from Ariana herself and, once she's able to make a change, that's when her family can really step up and support her.

It's not like they could stop her from an ED, she's a grown ass woman and they wouldn't risk severing their relationship with her (especially Frankie)

I hate this possibility but thinking about her and Cynthia's constant emotional interviews during the Wicked movies suddenly click when applying this context (which makes all the bullying towards them at the time even more evil and insidious than it already was).

I also remember Chadwick Boseman.

I really don't want to speculate anymore but it's now gotten to the point where I can't watch her MVs and performances anymore cause it's so alarming. Like the stans just want all of us to just smile and nod but how are we supposed to react to seeing her? I also hate the "eat a cheeseburger" and "skeleton" comments and hate obviously.

I guess I'll just have to avoid her new videos and performances from now on and trust that she and her inner circle are working on her recovery bts?

Even if Ariana does have an ED (none of us can know that for sure,) all these tweets prove is that a lot of these people tweet this to feel better about themselves and don't really understand the cognitive mechanisms of EDs. Simply telling someone they look sick or that their health is at risk in an alarmist tone without any understanding, compassion, or support does very, very little to help them and actually risks accelerating behaviors. I'm growing tired of this discourse every time a new picture of her comes out, I don't really know what people expect the end result of this to be besides further making Ariana feel alienated if nothing has changed since it first blew up after the Wicked press junket.

I don't know why you got downvoted for this because you're right.

I don't think that saying nothing is the right movie, but how you say what you say matters with an eating disorder. Eating disorders are extremely complex mental illnesses and while we know what people mean when they say she looks unhealthy or bad, her brain won't receive it the same way and it could encourage the patient to go even deeper into disordered habits (if she has one; I say if simply because while i may have thoughts, i'm ultimately not a medical professional and am incapable of making any sort of diagnosis of anyone).

The key with discussing an ED with someone who has one is not to comment on how they look, but rather express a personal concern for their health generally. EDs often spring from a hyper awareness of how one looks so focusing all of the dialogue on appearance is only going to reinforce in the mind of someone with an ED a need to continue acting to alter their appearance.

I don't doubt many of her fans are legitimately concerned but there absolutely needs to be a change in how that concern gets expressed. The way a lot of it gets expressed now is likely making the issue worse.

Only in very specific cases. The majority of the time people comment upon a pop star's body, the pop star in question is not showing any signs of something negative. Like when people in 2012 were calling Gaga fat despite her looking perfectly normal. It's rare commentary on female celebrity's appearance is ever aimed at any noticeable signs of something unhealthy.

Anyone with working eyes can see that there's something going on. No one is deluding themselves. People say "I don't get the what do you expect us to do about it comments" but really, what do you expect us to do about it? She's a grown woman not a child and we don't know her personally, we are not her friends or family.

Eating disorders are longtime physical and mental battles so the only thing I can personally hope for is that she gets the help she needs.

Also it's hard to take topics like this and the fake concern that comes with them seriously when people constantly ridicule her for the way she looks calling her anorexiana, a skeleton etc, even here. A lot of y'all don't care about her well being or the well being of people who suffer from EDs in general.

She reminds me of LaToya Jackson. At first everyone was worried, but she seems to be fine, just frail looking.

There's several lyrics that on the album and the title track itself that allude to this issue if you believe that is what is going on, and address that there's really nothing anyone else but her can do.

"Tell me, who's to blame? Is it the people or myself? / But this time feels so different, this is not a cry for help"

"Empathy, fix this reality / You know I don't believe I belong"

"Good things can replace dysfunction, obsession"

"Been holding hands with so much complexity since I was five"

She makes it clear she has long struggled with her mental health and works every day to overcome such, so if you believe she's dealing with anything specific, it's hard to imagine it's not something she already knowingly accepts is an issue and works tirelessly through.

She shouldn't tour, period. Someone needs to have an intervention. The upcoming Fockers promo, I don't think she should do that press tour at all

I saw some photos and was literally terrified. I don't want to support her evil company so I'm keeping a distance from her music even though I like her.

If her family can't do anything maybe Mariah can help her. She looks up to her. She'll listen to her.

I'm sure she had to be cleared by medical professionals before she went on tour. These companies take out insurance to let people tour in case of any emergencies.

Besides the obvious fact that major record labels are indeed evil and devoid of a moral compass, i think Ariana, at this point of her career, has earned enough artistic freedom for her label not to be able to tell her no.

Weren't we just told the new music video is her girlboss f*** you moment (like many of such in the past in her career) ochestrated by her goodself? Suddenly she's a smol bean with no power no control and everything is the label's orders rip

And what's the point of making another thread about it

What's the point of the millionth thread about the sales/streams of the same 10 people over and over and over? Yet those make up the majority of the traffic of this website so coffee2

I love Ariana and am seeing her in concert in a few weeks but she looks unwell and needs help.

It's so ridiculous that anyone can deny that at this point, hopefully she heals before it's too late. dancehall3

Ariana is an intelligent woman.

I won't speculate about her weight or mental health.

She is grown enough to figure out on her own.

eating disorders have absolutely nothing to do with being intelligent or stupid. i pray you never have to find that out yourself

because that's what's that forum is for? Are you seriously comparing discussing sales to theorizing about Ariana's body? there's been plenty of threads about that already, there is literally nothing more to say about this topic

Man, this is a sticky issue. Because there's Ariana the person and there's Ariana the public figure.

I'm sure the people in her life are aware something is wrong, I'm sure there are people close to her trying to help and yet I'm sure there are also people who don't care and are just happy there's profit being made. But as others have pointed out, oftentimes criticism or being "called out" on something like an ED only puts the sufferer deeper in denial or indignation.

Whether people want to admit it or not, it's harmful to look like this and continue to exist so prominently in the public eye as if nothing is wrong. It does contribute to the normalization of this body type, and it's fair to worry about her younger fans who are more impressionable. Especially when the argument that it's wrong to comment on women's bodies at all gets run with and has been Ariana's main line of defense this whole time.

Ultimately it's not wrong to comment when it's this alarming. It's just not something anyone but her can really heal.

Years ago i was extremely sick for a while and lost lots of weight and at that time i was always tired and i couldn't even stand up without feeling dizzy..

the fact that she's touring in that condition worries me.. i hope someone intervenes and gets her the help she needs

you can tell ariana's team is full of opps, yes men and people plotting on her.

and her family is obviously evil as well, her gay brother and the witch of a mother give off the same vibe as britney's demonic family of leeches. they are sucking the money and life juices out of her

None of us know that for sure? Those of us that have eyes know for sure. She is looking deathly ill. I'm a huge Ariana fan and I am very worried and have been for a while.

Yes most of us do not know how to approach this topic or address it without being insensitive/making it worse, but that doesn't mean we don't want her to get help. The petal video was so good in concept, but it was genuinely disturbing to watch. Ignoring it and saying "there is nothing you can do, stfu" isn't any better...
