Was Charmbracelet that bad or was it bad because it came after Butterfly?

A score between 40-50 is not a horrible album for me. That's an average or slightly below average album to me. Which is exactly what Charmbracelet is to me.

An actual horrible album deserves a score of 20 or lower. An album like Kevin Federline's is in fact horrible and deserved such a score. That's why I do not agree with the scores of 10 and 20 that some publications gave to it. Charmbracelet shits on his album.

I don't see how my score implies none of the people involved are capable of making good music. The score only implies that I think Charmbracelet is rather weak to average.

I get that that is your personal view. But in Metacritic terms... anything under 60 = bad music.. that is why scores that low are published in red.

Red meaning "Danger", "Beware", "Don't Touch, listen or look at".

I believe that it was the lowest rated album by any act of her echelon.

CB is an album about perseverence, Faith, belief in oneself and the media acted as if she somehow offended music culture itself.

Charmbracelet was panned primarily because of the post-Glitter effect. The reviews were absurdly misogynistic, reported from a tabloid lens, and more often than not focused on her appearance, her ment

Mariah was blacklisted as well.. After Loverboy, radio would not play any of her songs.

TTR was one of the top 10 best selling singles of 2002 in The US, Loverboy was the best selling single of 2001 in the US.

TTR charted for 14 consecutive weeks in the Hot singles chart chart top 10, peaking at #1, charting for 39 weeks in total.

EVEN Never Too Far was a top #3 sales hit, but had 0 airplay.

Never Too Far (Hot Singles Sales): 3 - 9 - 10 - 12 - 12 - 14 - 15 - 15 - 16 - 20 - 20 - 25 - 31 - 37 - 43 - 44 - 48 - 59 - 64 - 65 - 61 - 62

In Europe... a single run like this would mean that the sales peak would have been the charts peak. In the US the song never graced the Hot 100.

Thanks for the pop music history and ENLIGHTENMENT, king! This was soo comprehensive and a DELIGHT to read. I feel like you took so much effort but you didn't have to! jonny5

I like some songs off Charmbracelet but I don't think the production is that great. TEOM was much better in the production department and the songwriting department overall in my opinion. I feel the same way about Butterfly. Both the 90s r&b / hip hop and the Motown inspired sounds she took on for those albums worked really well I think. I think Charmbracelet's production is very simple and I like the Motown sample and electronic sounds she took on for TEOM more. I think that sound really suits her as she create similar soundscapes for a lot of songs off MIAM: TEC, Caution and Here For It All.

it's not bad. I feel she's chosen the wrong lane for herself that time, but I get the introspective/quieter album because it was the mood she's chasing that time. the glitter effect made it look bad and the media portrayed her as alcoholic and crazy woman. also through the rain wasn't the best idea for a 'comeback' that ILT had everything in it. she needed a song to make people watch/check her again and make the media change their opinion about her.

the one remix and boy I need you were stronger tracks but still I don't think they had this comeback or a hit written in it. so it was doomed to flop.

No actually it was pretty good, surprised that she could make a comeback considering this one flopped. TEOM is better but not radically far away from this album. People that bought this album turned in for the next era I guess.

Some of the people in here throwing the word "objectively" around over opinions in media... open the schools.

Objective = Mariah Carey releases music, Katy Perry does too.

Subjective = Mariah's 5 octave vocal range is subjectively the greatest thing I've ever heard, while Katy Perry sounds like a cat straining on all 3 of her octaves.

Subjectively, this is a fantastic album and in my top 3 along with Butterfly and TEOM. The critics (especially that one Rolling Stone critic and some other one) had issues with her for some odd reason and they really took it out on her during this era. Some of her best material clearly came from her feelings for Derek Jeter. I just wish Charmbracelet would get a proper remaster, there are a couple of issues I have with production, namely Clown since it's my fave.

I really liked her cover of Bringing on the heartbreak from this album. It's one of my favorite Mariah covers, randomly.

I'm a charmy stan and have said it's my number 2 after butterfly for the longest time now. however, saying that, I get why people don't care for it, as on my first listen when I discovered mariah, I felt like it was bad. I think it takes time to appreciate this one, its really a beautiful album.
