Hi sis,
I am sorry to hear thar you got a sun burn. I had one so bad almost 10 yrs ago that now I am very cautious about applying sunscreen even in the winter time when most people wouldn't bc the sun is still out!!

Sadly, all I could do and all you can really do is just let your skin slowly peel off (but the good news is you will get a tan, if you were hoping for one!)

My only tips are:

1) drink lots of water

2) Stay inside, if possible, until you are fully healed. I found that applying anything on my skin hurt a lot, so I wouldn't even want to go outside because that meant I needed to apply sun screen. I opted just to stay inside with the curtains drawn so I didn't need to interact with my skin.

3) My sunburn was so bad that it hurt to put on clothes like jeans or socks so I literally only had shorts and a tshirt on, so I recommend to opt for lighter layers so there is less of chance of friction between your clothes and skin = less pain

4) I found After-sun to really be a marketing gimmick. Most of the time its just aloe vera or some type of cooling agent like aloe vera in the product to give ou a cooling sensation. I would stick to what you have, IF you have a fragrance-free mositurizer, I would just use that as your skin begins to heal to help with the dryness and peeling. I would avoid fragrance stuff again just to prevent irritation

5) Lastly and prob most importantly, I would watch for symptoms like to make sure you aren't suffering from heat stroke or swelling of eyes!!!

Good luck!!!!

I've had second degree sun burns before, as in they blistered and it absolutely hurt to even just move. Aloe gels only brought relief for minutes at best - so I had to get a prescription topical lotion to ease it. It eventually peeled and healed.

But it's best to avoid exposing it to the sun for worse burns, and allowing it to heal.

Ok so I actually have photosensitive skin and have had burns that have led to skin infections before, so here's what works for me:

  • Like others have said, stay hydrated and stay out of the sun until you are healed. It's better to avoid the sun because applying sunscreen over a burn can sting.

  • Sunscreen EXPIRES. Make sure you are not using an old bottle and also make sure you are reapplying every 2 hours, or after getting wet. My holy grail sunscreen is Eucerin sun allergy cream.

  • I find bottled aloe vera gels a piece of ****, I dont know what it is but they make my skin sting very bad if applied on a burn. Instead, buy an aloe vera plant. They're not expensive, they're low maintenance, and most importantly you can use the gel in its purest form. It also doesn't give a greasy feel, it cools and soothes and dries like water.

Edit: I forgot to add, make sure you apply sunscreen under sheer clothes as you can still burn. Also be wary if it's cloudy as you can still burn if UV is high

Aleo Vera gel yes but mix it with pure glycerine and put it all over after shower when you are still wet. It works great for my sunburn pain.

it happened to me in Mexico and I also thought going into the cooler waters would help and it did not. Walking seemed okay, but as soon as you would stop it would sting immediately. Harsh learning lesson to be better prepared for being out in the sun.
