In 1992, Garth Brooks released his fourth studio album, The Chase. He was already a country music superstar and the expectations were high.

The album's lead single was the song "We Shall Be Free", an anthem against human prejudice against racism, homophobia, and freedom of speech.

The song was banned by country stations and became his first single not to enter the top 10. Despite this, The Chase became critically successful and debuted at number one in the United States, blocking Madonna with the Erotica album.

In 1993, Garth Brooks performed the national anthem at the Super Bowl. He tried to get NBC to show a video for "We Should Be Free," which had a significant social messGe. NBC saw an extremely controversial views in the MV and decided that they would not take any chances to demonstrate it.

As a result, Garth Brooks refused to go on stage right before the performance, and NBC, having no backup plan, decided to show the MV.
