Artists who have already released their best music, and it's all downhill from here?

Featured Replies

I'm going to say Lorde and Lana Del Rey. Lana's music is still amazing, but I don't think she'll ever top Norman F**ing Rockwell*.

I still have hope that Taylor Swift could top Folklore, though.

An extremely large % of pop artists release their best work in their first decade. (Often one of their first 3 albums).

So I would say most artists 10 years past their debut fit this category.

Sky Ferreira

Nah, her leaked stuff is superior to her first album. It's gonna be such a good album to listen to in 2085.

I'm gonna say Avril Lavigne. adore this woman but… boy bashing songs at 40 isn't it.

Maybe Madonna? She's ******* brilliant but her latest efforts were kinda tragic.

And I'd add someone obvious, like Katy Perry. Her music wasn't that good to begin with, but she had some cute tracks earlier in her career. Look at her now.

Not Lana Del Rey since her last album Ocean Blvd is top 2 along with NFR. I dont think Lana has reached her peak artistically yet.

Off the top of my head:

Gwen Stefani - Gwen should be the most obvious answer since her first 2 albums were absolutely top-notched. It feels like she died and someone replaced her to make new music after her first 2 albums skull

Nelly Furtado

Fergie (not like she's released much tho)

Alicia Keys (her first 4 albums were excellent, then it went completwly downhill eversince, I seriously do not understand what kind of music she has been making, almost unlistenable).

Katy Perry for sure

Britney Spears

Marina Diamonds

Kinda Madonna too.

And many more...

I don't know - I feel like a lot of the artist who I would name based on having a few lackluster projects in a row still have the potential for a career-defining album, at least in terms of quality. It's very rare that someone is in such a rut that coming out of it seems unimaginable.

I guess the one place this might be true is artists who rely heavily on their vocals who don't have the same vocal talent as their prime years anymore. Tori Amos, for example - I think I could still like her upcoming album very much, but so much of her artistry is predicated on her voice - which at its peak I personally think was and to this day remains the best voice in all of music history, I love it that much - that it's obviously silly to expect her new work to compare to something like Boys For Pele. But those artists are relatively few and far between, and some manage to transition their artistry into something different and still equally compelling.

This is true of most artists, who peak creatively within the first couple of years of their career. It's extremely rare for artists to improve their output, or reach new heights 10+ years into their career's. Out of the MPGs, only Taylor, Beyonce and Ariana have really done this. And of the Khia's, I'd count Charli in that too.

reputation = peak

Lover = abyss

folkfolk to Showgirl all inclines because there's nothing Lower. Nothing match thee puta though.
