Honestly every 45+ year old pop artist with a huge peak should be doing this or thinking about doing it. Unless they're Madonna or Mariah Carey they will probably not make any significant profit for the rest of their lives and sales like these basically duplicate their net worth and set them for life just by signing a paper.

She didn't own her masters. Artists can sell the rights to their music without owning it.

It's sad, because it almost feels like confirmation that she may never return to music.

If the sale really was between $100 and $400 million, that's probably an amount she wouldn't earn again without touring or releasing new albums.

Still, she deserves to enjoy the wealth that came from years of dedication and success.

What unreleased recordings ? She doesn't sing on a large portion of what was released. Do you really think there are completed, unreleased tracks with her vocals on them just hanging out in the vaults. No.

From Britney, In the zone and Blackout for sure... after that not much

She's basically giving up future profits of her past catalog for an upfront lump sum. Doesn't mean she can't tour or release new music, and new music released after such deals is usually not included.

Now that those rights are sold this also prevents her family from ever getting ahold of and profiting from them if they were to somehow weasel their way back into her life or (god forbid) something were to happen to her.

Many artist do this now. I also believe there's a big tax break.

well yes, Bieber literally sold his catalog and released two albums just last year, this decision doesn't seal anything other than money and her music being used freely on things she'll have no say on.

200m is a lot! Taylor bought the masters to her entire catalog for 360m and Britney is getting (around) 200m for just her portion of the rights. If they were the masters to the entire catalog the sum would be a lot higher.

??? Not all of her music is a Britney Jean situation, especially not pre-conservatorship She has a lot of unreleased music written and sung by herself, like Ouch, Rebellion, Welcome to Me, Untitled Lullaby, etc.

I hope she secured a good deal. She deserves it for that icnic discog

I really think it was just a financial decision here and nothing more. Artist make most of their money from touring anyways. A new album and a tour would likely bring in more money for her than royalties of her entire back catalogue would in years. She has great streams yes, but not a lot of writing credits on the biggest hits so her annual earnings from them was probably (relatively) low.

A large sum like that also makes for a great investing opportunity for long term interests and returns. And there's a tax break apparently.
