I think seeing as she has made it abundandtly clear that she has absoutely ZERO interest in returning to the industry and NONE of the people in her life are worth leaving an inheritance for, I say: ge

Her share is probably small

It scares me she sold this for cheap. She might just be joking but in recent years she will say things like "i forget i'm famous" or act really excited when not as popular artists will mention her.

Should be over 500 million...wow

There is a lot to unpack here, but my first thought is how she can get something resembling a decent team around her that isn't looking to rob her blind.

I know people have mixed feelings here about her sons. I'm ambivalent.

The next is regardless of what you think of her talent, the catalog should be worth objectively more than this. She probably doesn't have the emotional strength to have looked for someone to offer more and figured she should take this before it degrades in value. I don't blame her.

I'm a bit confused though - I mean, I don't know, just anecdotally, I hear her constantly. Maybe it's just me - i'm talking commercials, the mall, the gas station, the airport. I know things are more complicated than that, but whatever.

the only worrisome part is getting a lump sum all at once instead of getting royalties every year which sustains money for the near future. hopefully she has a good financial planner and the money doesn't run out for her

I really hope she had competent counsel guiding her through this but knowing her history.... I just worry about her.

This is not good news. Not sure what the "yasss queen get money!!" replies are on about.

I hope the deal was good and she is satisfied with it. It's up to her what to do with her career at the end of the day.

Still, surreal to see such an iconic discography get a price tag like that.

All of this. This is SO bad... so so bad, for her, in terms of financially. 200 million is a joke. She should have gotten WAY more. Shes naive and she could have struck a FAR better deal that retained ownership of her share of the rights of her catalogue. The Weeknd just did this - he didnt sell his rights, he borrowed 1 billion against future royalties for a specific term. She could have done the same thing - bagged 200 million AND kept her share of her rights like he did... I feel like nobody around her is financially literate or business minded enough to guide her properly. This is a huge mistake. TRAGIC. Madonna, Michael Jackson, Price, Mariah - NONE of them have sold the rights to their catalogues. They used them as leverage to borrow more money (asset backed lending) whilst retaining full ownership. Britney could, and should, have done the same. I fear she got scammed out of the biggest asset she has, and will ever, have - her own lifes work. All I pray for is that she invests that 200 million with a trustworthy financial advisor. :(

Also, I dont know the specifics of the deal. None of us do, its under NDA. We dont know how big or small her percentage was - this could be a huge factor in her deciding to sell. Either way, I just hope the deal was not rushed and she had time and proper guidance to make the BEST choice for HER.

Shes not a writer, producer, nothing. The royalties she probably was receiving from her music are very small anyway. 200 million is good.

I guess it makes sense to sell cause as more time passes she'll probably have less and less streams (revenue) as her music becomes more forgotten

Umm.. Britney's streaming numbers only keep getting bigger and bigger so idk what you talking about rip

And tbh 200 million doesnt seem like it will last long anyways?

Thats definitely not enough for her kids and their families. Especially if she sold off her unreleased music aswell

And this is why 200 million doesn't make sense to anyone

and her fans are still gonna come up with wild theories about how she's making a big comeback

I can guarantee you that she did this to screw over her family. She makes $7M a year from streaming and physical sales/airplay probably aren't enough to push that to $10M. The actual number she sold for is not in the legal paperwork so it's entirely unknown, but if it was $200M, it would take her at least 20 years at her current rate to get there. Seeing as she's inactive, streaming payouts are decreasing and she has no plan to promote, it would probably take more time than that. By the time she made the next $200M, she'd be too old to fully enjoy it.

I agree that it was still a bad decision (which is to be expected with Cade, her horrendous business manager who uses his role to set up hook-ups), but I don't think it's a disaster. She still has her Elizabeth Arden deal that produces millions yearly, a record deal requiring at least one more album, a huge back catalog of unreleased music she could put out and the ability to release future books for sale. I'd be more worried if she had no options for future income.

As a performer, even new artists make 5% in royalties. I would imagine by now Britney was making well over 10-15% of her royalties, which is not bad.

10 minutes ago, chris1991 said:

So she just won't get royalties?

Correct. She is still able to perform all songs and do whatever she'd like - her royalties are just now being sent to an investment firm.

after her real performance in Brazil - she will announce B10 and a global tour - bigger than ERAS tour with 300+ dates

Interest off 200 million would be good... 10 years of 200 million could generate another 50-70 million

This is my point. Theres a whole newer generation listening to her songs. Shes constantly reaching new streaming peaks on Spotify. This was a TERRIBLE decision long term for her.

I get why she did it from a personal/emotional perspective, but we both agree, long term this is a TERRIBLE idea for her. Shes reaching new peaks on streaming like Spotify, and shes doing NOTHING to promote whilst still getting massive gains on streaming. She wouldnt have had to wait 20 years to bag 200 million, like I said in my comment, she could have borrowed AGAINST her share of her rights to her catalogue and used the 20 years worth of royalties to pay it back tax free. The Weeknd does that. Elon, Bezos, they do it with their assets. This was her ONLY true asset since the c-ship team extorted her and sold off her property and stole 600 million dollars of her money. She didnt think this through correctly. She could have gotten the 200 million AND STILL kept her ownserhip of her catalogue rights. The decision seems more personal than practial, which is the wrong thing to do when money and assets are involved... her family ****** her up, and then ****** her ability to make sound financial decisions for herself. Cade is a ******* clown - I COULD HAVE BETTER ADVISED HER. I used to work in wealth and asset management at one of the biggest banks in the world.

There's something more to all of the celebs doing this that is above our knowledge / pay grade. Cuz artists selling their catalogues towards the end of their lives / careers, sure that makes sense. But younger artists doing this ?? It's more puzzling .. and I wonder if there's more to the story

In Britney's case tho, maybe this is confirmation that she's officially retired from the entertainment biz. And after what she's been through I hope she spends her days doing what makes her happy and that she's safe and protected. And anyone in here choosing to make jokes about her in particular , or alleging drug abuse, yall are ugly !

With dwindling popularity, uncertainty in how music keeps moving forward in the streaming era, and no actual desire in owning their music, some would really like to see their work's investment upfront. The likes of Britney or Katy don't care, so selling makes sense, the likes of Beyoncé and Taylor do, so they would go above and beyond to keep ownership of everything they've made.

If Britney wants to venture on stuff like her alleged jewelry line, that will make a bank, so her past music isn't her only potential cashflow.

when you sell your catalog the income is taxed as capital gains… royalties are taxed as income

This! She don't want to be an artist anymore. She could get those millions and get interest of it. It's not that deep

Which is why BORROWING against your assets is the real cheat code and what the Weeknd did and is exactly what Britney should have done

i hope whoever bought it gets the greenlight to release Original Doll and more outtakes!

You mean they sold it for her because we all know she was not involved in this!

If its under 200 then its even worse. They said low 9 figures..thats anything under 400 million

Good for her, and i hope that in her will she leaves everything to charity and nothing to her greedy ass family! Live your best life queen!!
