Bieber sold his and didn't retire, so I don't think this says anything about the future other than she wants a lump sum of cash now rather than royalties paid out in the future.

She has absolutely never owned any of her masters lol.

I'm pretty sure she what was sold was her right to royalties for any music in the future. Even if you don't write, produce, or own masters to a song the recording artist(s) still get a percentage of royalties for being the performing artist… like 10-20% cut.

She accepted a large up front paycheck at the expense of not having steady catalog royalties paid to her in the future.

Interesting move, curious to see if we ever hear unreleased music or if she decides to come back in some shape or form

There's something more to all of the celebs doing this that is above our knowledge / pay grade. Cuz artists selling their catalogues towards the end of their lives / careers, sure that makes sense. But younger artists doing this ?? It's more puzzling .. and I wonder if there's more to the story

In Britney's case tho, maybe this is confirmation that she's officially retired from the entertainment biz. And after what she's been through I hope she spends her days doing what makes her happy and that she's safe and protected. And anyone in here choosing to make jokes about her in particular , or alleging drug abuse, yall are ugly !

I hope the deal was good and she is satisfied with it. It's up to her what to do with her career at the end of the day.

Still, surreal to see such an iconic discography get a price tag like that.

This. She also sold her publishing rights, meaning that the company that bought them will be able to license her music for commercials, tv shows, movies, etc.

That's not the total value of her catalogue, just her share of it. I'm happy for her, she deserves absolutely anything she wants and I hope she has the time of her life with it

It's happening for a few different reasons. Even though music makes a lot less money these days through record sales, music catalogues still have so much value due to the market change and the different avenues of profit now with royalties and syncing rights that didn't exist on the same level at the height of record sales. And with the industry changing so rapidly and in the age of AI, who knows what could come along and massively decrease an artist's catalogue in value, no matter how popular they are. From a business pov, it makes sense for artist's to cash in now, particularly if they are older or have already openly announced their retirement from touring (like Britney or Bieber) where most artists make their money these days anyway

From my understanding if she doesn't own the masters she's just selling her portion of the royalties, so she will no longer make money from the specific recording of whichever song. So sales, streams and more importantly licensing.

Yes I have thought that there's an AI component involved in all of this somehow. If I get conspiratorial about it , I think these companies that buy up music catalogues are training some AI either to replicate vocals better or to perfect AI songwriting. It's all very ominous and spooky when I think about it too long, hopefully I'm just being crazy lol

I definitely think she deserves more money but happy queen is about to be loaded! Sad though cause I think she really has no interest returning to public life.
